Efficient Synchronization Primitives for GPUs
In this paper, we revisit the design of synchronization
primitives---specifically barriers, mutexes, and semaphores---and how they
apply to the GPU. Previous implementations are insufficient due to the
discrepancies in hardware and programming model of the GPU and CPU. We create
new implementations in CUDA and analyze the performance of spinning on the GPU,
as well as a method of sleeping on the GPU, by running a set of memory-system
benchmarks on two of the most common GPUs in use, the Tesla- and Fermi-class
GPUs from NVIDIA. From our results we define higher-level principles that are
valid for generic many-core processors, the most important of which is to limit
the number of atomic accesses required for a synchronization operation because
atomic accesses are slower than regular memory accesses. We use the results of
the benchmarks to critique existing synchronization algorithms and guide our
new implementations, and then define an abstraction of GPUs to classify any GPU
based on the behavior of the memory system. We use this abstraction to create
suitable implementations of the primitives specifically targeting the GPU, and
analyze the performance of these algorithms on Tesla and Fermi. We then predict
performance on future GPUs based on characteristics of the abstraction. We also
examine the roles of spin waiting and sleep waiting in each primitive and how
their performance varies based on the machine abstraction, then give a set of
guidelines for when each strategy is useful based on the characteristics of the

Software Requirements Specification of A University Class Scheduler
The University Class Scheduler (UCS) presented in this paper is a novel scheduling tool intended to be used by universities to schedule classes into classrooms. In essence, UCS allows university administrators to enter relevant college and building information, schedule the input classes (courses) into input classrooms, and create web pages that provide detailed schedule information on a semester-by-semester basis. The UCS, which performs the scheduling of classes according to a number of user-selected parameters, can be easily adapted for applications outside the academic realm. This paper presents the main aspects of the University Class Scheduler’s UML-based specification, gives details of the UCS’ current development status, and points to a series of possible extensions that we intend to investigate in the near future
An Untriggered Search for Optical Bursts
We present an untriggered search for optical bursts with the ROTSE-I
telephoto array. Observations were taken which monitor an effective 256 square
degree field continuously over 125 hours to m_{ROTSE}=15.7. The uniquely large
field, moderate limiting magnitude and fast cadence of 10 minutes permits
transient searches in a new region of sensitivity. Our search reveals no
candidate events. To quantify this result, we simulate potential optical bursts
with peak magnitude, m_{p}, at t=10 s, which fade as f=(\frac{t}{t_{0}})
^{\alpha_{t}}, where \alpha_t < 0. Simple estimates based on observational
evidence indicate that a search of this sensitivity begins to probe the
possible region occupied by GRB orphan afterglows. Our observing protocol and
image sensitivity result in a broad region of high detection efficiency for
light curves to the bright and slowly varying side of a boundary running from
[\alpha_{t},m_{p}]=[-2.0,6.0] to [-0.3,13.2]. Within this region, the
integrated rate of brief optical bursts is less than 1.1\times 10^{-8} {\rm
s}^{-1} {\rm deg}^{-2}. At 22 times the observed GRB rate from BATSE,
this suggests a limit on \frac{\theta_{opt}}{\theta_{\gamma}}\lesssim 5 where
\theta_{opt} and \theta_{\gamma} are the optical and gamma-ray collimation
angles, respectively. Several effects might explain the absence of optical
bursts, and a search of the kind described here but more sensitive by about 4

Methodology issues concerning the accuracy of kinematic data collection and analysis using the ariel performance analysis system
Kinematics, the study of motion exclusive of the influences of mass and force, is one of the primary methods used for the analysis of human biomechanical systems as well as other types of mechanical systems. The Anthropometry and Biomechanics Laboratory (ABL) in the Crew Interface Analysis section of the Man-Systems Division performs both human body kinematics as well as mechanical system kinematics using the Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS). The APAS supports both analysis of analog signals (e.g. force plate data collection) as well as digitization and analysis of video data. The current evaluations address several methodology issues concerning the accuracy of the kinematic data collection and analysis used in the ABL. This document describes a series of evaluations performed to gain quantitative data pertaining to position and constant angular velocity movements under several operating conditions. Two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional data collection and analyses were completed in a controlled laboratory environment using typical hardware setups. In addition, an evaluation was performed to evaluate the accuracy impact due to a single axis camera offset. Segment length and positional data exhibited errors within 3 percent when using three-dimensional analysis and yielded errors within 8 percent through two-dimensional analysis (Direct Linear Software). Peak angular velocities displayed errors within 6 percent through three-dimensional analyses and exhibited errors of 12 percent when using two-dimensional analysis (Direct Linear Software). The specific results from this series of evaluations and their impacts on the methodology issues of kinematic data collection and analyses are presented in detail. Far Ultraviolet Absolute Flux of alpha Virginis
We present the far ultraviolet spectrum of alpha Virginis taken with EURD
spectrograph on-board MINISAT-01. The spectral range covered is from ~900 to
1080 A with 5 A spectral resolution. We have fitted Kurucz models to IUE
spectra of alpha Vir and compared the extension of the model to our wavelengths
with EURD data. This comparison shows that EURD fluxes are consistent with the
prediction of the model within 20-30%, depending on the reddening assumed. EURD
fluxes are consistent with Voyager observations but are ~60% higher than most

Sex-Specific Clinical Outcomes of the PACT-HF Randomized Trial
BACKGROUND: Transitional care may have different effects in males and females hospitalized for heart failure. We assessed the sex-specific effects of a transitional care model on clinical outcomes following hospitalization for heart failure. METHODS: In this stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial of adults hospitalized for heart failure in Ontario, Canada, 10 hospitals were randomized to a group of transitional care services or usual care. Outcomes in this exploratory analysis were composite all-cause readmission, emergency department visit, or death at 6 months; and composite all-cause readmission or emergency department visit at 6 months. Models were adjusted for stepped-wedge design and patient age. RESULTS: Among 2494 adults, mean (SD) age was 77.7 (12.1) years, and 1258 (50.4%) were female. The first composite outcome occurred in 371 (66.3%) versus 433 (64.1%) males (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04 [95% CI, 0.86-1.26]; P=0.67) and in 326 (59.9%) versus 463 (64.8%) females (HR, 0.83 [95% CI, 0.69-1.01]; P=0.06) in the intervention and usual care groups, respectively (P=0.012 for sex interaction). The second composite outcome occurred in 357 (63.8%) versus 417 (61.7%) males (HR, 1.03 [95% CI, 0.85-1.24]; P=0.76) and 314 (57.7%) versus 450 (63.0%) females (HR, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.67-0.99]; P=0.037) in the intervention and usual care groups, respectively (P=0.024 for sex interaction). The sex differences were driven by a reduction in all-cause emergency department visits among females (HR, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.51-0.87]; P=0.003), but not males (HR, 1.10 [95% CI, 0.85-1.43]; P=0.46), receiving the intervention (P<0.001 for sex interaction). CONCLUSIONS: A transitional care model offered a reduction in all-cause emergency department visits among females but not males following hospitalization for heart failure. Endemicity of Zoonotic Diseases in Pigs and Humans in Lowland and Upland Lao PDR: Identification of Socio-cultural Risk Factors
In Lao People's Democratic Republic pigs are kept in close contact with families. Human risk of infection with pig zoonoses arises from direct contact and consumption of unsafe pig products. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Luang Prabang (north) and Savannakhet (central-south) Provinces. A total of 59 villages, 895 humans and 647 pigs were sampled and serologically tested for zoonotic pathogens including: hepatitis E virus (HEV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and Trichinella spiralis; In addition, human sera were tested for Taenia spp. and cysticercosis. Seroprevalence of zoonotic pathogens in humans was high for HEV (Luang Prabang: 48.6%, Savannakhet: 77.7%) and T. spiralis (Luang Prabang: 59.0%, Savannakhet: 40.5%), and lower for JEV (around 5%), Taenia spp. (around 3%) and cysticercosis (Luang Prabang: 6.1, Savannakhet 1.5%). Multiple correspondence analysis and hierarchical clustering of principal components was performed on descriptive data of human hygiene practices, contact with pigs and consumption of pork products. Three clusters were identified: Cluster 1 had low pig contact and good hygiene practices, but had higher risk of T. spiralis. Most people in cluster 2 were involved in pig slaughter (83.7%), handled raw meat or offal (99.4%) and consumed raw pigs' blood (76.4%). Compared to cluster 1, cluster 2 had increased odds of testing seropositive for HEV and JEV. Cluster 3 had the lowest sanitation access and had the highest risk of HEV, cysticercosis and Taenia spp. Farmers which kept their pigs tethered (as opposed to penned) and disposed of manure in water sources had 0.85 (95% CI: 0.18 to 0.91) and 2.39 (95% CI: 1.07 to 5.34) times the odds of having pigs test seropositive for HEV, respectively. The results have been used to identify entry-points for intervention and management strategies to reduce disease exposure in humans and pigs, informing control activities in a cysticercosis hyper-endemic village
