Application of satellite remote-sensing data to land selection and management
A pilot project conducted to demonstrate the utility and economy of satellite data in preparing thematic maps of a wilderness area emphasizing those resources of greatest interest to the potential owner is described. Vegetation maps delineating potential commercial timber and maps of suggested mineral prospecting areas of seven scattered regions were prepared by interpretation of LANDSAT images, coupled with a limited amount of ground truth. Images acquired both in winter and summer seasons were registered to township maps and used in making interpretations of the areal extent of commercial timber potentials. The amount of snow cover visible through the forest canopies was found to be a useful indicator of timber potentials. Identification was made of characteristic topographic features which are typical of flood plain deposits or of the well developed trellis drainage patterns which can indicate the strike of structural grain of underlying Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The presence of igneous and mixed igneous and metamorphic rocks were indicated by combinations of spectral differences and anomalous interruptions of local radial drainage patterns
Multivariate Concentric Square Field unveils behavioral exploratory categories of locomotor activity in mouse model of Down syndrome
poster abstractDown Syndrome (DS), trisomy 21(Ts21), is a genetic condition in which a third copy of chromosome 21 is present, and results in neurodevelopmental deficits including intellectual disability. DS has been modeled in mice; Ts65Dn mouse model displays many of the phenotypes associated with DS, including cognitive deficits. We previously studied behavioral phenotypes of Ts65Dn mice and observed significantly increased locomotor activity in a novel arena (an “open field”). In those studies, treatment of the Ts65Dn mice with ~10 mg/kg/day of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a selective inhibitor of the DYRK1A kinase (one of the genes implicated in the neurodevelopmental deficits in DS and in Ts65Dn mice), failed to attenuate hyperactivity. Locomotor activity in an open field is a basic measure of general exploration in a simple environment, and was only moderately sensitive to the hyperactivity of the Ts65Dn mice. The aim of the current study was to use a more advanced analysis of behavioral patterns of exploration in a more complex, multi-partitioned arena, termed the Multivariate Concentric Square Field (MCSF). The advantage of MCSF is that it provides more elaborate measures of exploratory behavior by examining different categories of exploration: general activity, exploratory activity, risk assessment, risk taking and shelter seeking behavior. Trisomic mice and euploid littermates were treated with a continuous high dose (~100 mg/kg/day) of EGCG or water (controls) beginning at weaning. At seven weeks of age, they were tested in the MCSF on two consecutive days. Our current results indicate that Ts65Dn mice displayed more exploratory behavior compared to controls, and the EGCG treatment may have normalized exploratory behavior toward that of controls. Identifying altered patterns of exploratory behavior in the Ts65Dn mouse and the normalizing effects of EGCG treatment may help provide a therapeutic approach to DS
Mock observations with the Millennium Simulation: cosmological downsizing and intermediate-redshift observations
Only by incorporating various forms of feedback can theories of galaxy formation reproduce the present-day luminosity function of galaxies. It has also been argued that such feedback processes might explain the counterintuitive behaviour of 'downsizing' witnessed since redshifts z ≃ 1–2. To examine this question, observations spanning 0.4 < z < 1.4 from the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP)2/Palomar survey are compared with a suite of equivalent mock observations derived from the Millennium Simulation, populated with galaxies using the galform code. Although the model successfully reproduces the observed total mass function and the general trend of 'downsizing', it fails to accurately reproduce the colour distribution and type-dependent mass functions at all redshifts probed. This failure is shared by other semi-analytical models which collectively appear to 'over-quench' star formation in intermediate-mass systems. These mock lightcones are also a valuable tool for investigating the reliability of the observational results in terms of cosmic variance. Using variance estimates derived from the lightcones, we confirm the significance of the decline since z ∼ 1 in the observed number density of massive blue galaxies which, we argue, provides the bulk of the associated growth in the red sequence. We also assess the limitations arising from cosmic variance in terms of our ability to observe mass-dependent growth since z ∼ 1
The Challenge of Machine Learning in Space Weather Nowcasting and Forecasting
The numerous recent breakthroughs in machine learning (ML) make imperative to
carefully ponder how the scientific community can benefit from a technology
that, although not necessarily new, is today living its golden age. This Grand
Challenge review paper is focused on the present and future role of machine
learning in space weather. The purpose is twofold. On one hand, we will discuss
previous works that use ML for space weather forecasting, focusing in
particular on the few areas that have seen most activity: the forecasting of
geomagnetic indices, of relativistic electrons at geosynchronous orbits, of
solar flares occurrence, of coronal mass ejection propagation time, and of
solar wind speed. On the other hand, this paper serves as a gentle introduction
to the field of machine learning tailored to the space weather community and as
a pointer to a number of open challenges that we believe the community should
undertake in the next decade. The recurring themes throughout the review are
the need to shift our forecasting paradigm to a probabilistic approach focused
on the reliable assessment of uncertainties, and the combination of
physics-based and machine learning approaches, known as gray-box.Comment: under revie
Dynamically controlled deposition of colloidal nanoparticles suspension in evaporating drops using laser radiation
Dynamic control of the distribution of polystyrene suspended nanoparticles in evaporating droplets is investigated using a 2.9 μm high power laser. Under laser radiation a droplet is locally heated and fluid flows are induced that overcome the capillary flow, and thus a reversal of the coffee-stain effect is observed. Suspension particles are accumulated in a localised area, one order of magnitude smaller than the original droplet size. By scanning the laser beam over the droplet, particles can be deposited in an arbitrary pattern. This finding raises the possibility for direct laser writing of suspended particles through a liquid layer. Furthermore, a highly uniform coating is possible by manipulating the laser beam diameter and exposure time. The effect is expected to be universally applicable to aqueous solutions independent of solutes (either particles or molecules) and deposited substrates
Previous reproductive history and post-natal family planning among HIV-infected women in Ukraine
BACKGROUND: Ukraine has the highest antenatal HIV prevalence in Europe. The national prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) programme has reduced the MTCT rate, but less attention has been given to the prevention of unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women. Our objectives were to describe the reproductive health, condom use and family planning (FP) practices of HIV-positive childbearing Ukrainian women and to identify factors associated with different methods of post-natal contraception.
METHODS: HIV-infected childbearing women, diagnosed before or during pregnancy, were enrolled prospectively in a post-natal cohort study in four regional HIV/AIDS centres in Ukraine from December 2007. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with post-natal FP practices.
RESULTS: Data were available for 371 women enrolled by March 2009; 82% (n = 303) were married or cohabiting, 27% (97 of 363) reported a current HIV-negative sexual partner and 69% were diagnosed with HIV during their most recent pregnancy. Overall, 21% (75 of 349) of women were not using contraception post-natally (of whom 80% reported no current sexual activity), 50% (174 of 349) used condoms, 20% (74 of 349) relied solely/partially on coitus interruptus and 4% used hormonal methods or intrauterine device. Among married/cohabiting women, consistent use of condoms in the previous pregnancy [AOR 1.96 (95%CI 1.06–3.62)], having an HIV-positive partner [AOR 0.42 (0.20–0.87)], current sexual activity [AOR 4.53 (1.19–17.3)] and study site were significantly associated with post-natal condom use; 16% of those with HIV-negative partners did not use condoms. Risk factors for non-use of FP were lack of affordability [AOR 6.34 (1.73–23.2)] and inconsistent use of condoms in the previous pregnancy [AOR 7.25 (1.41–37.2)].
CONCLUSIONS: More than 40% of HIV-positive women in this population are at risk of unintended pregnancy and the one in six women in HIV-discordant couples not using barrier methods risk transmitting HIV to their partners. Our study results are limited by the observational nature of the data and the potential for both measured and unmeasured confounding
A reverse engineering approach to the suppression of citation biases reveals universal properties of citation distributions
The large amount of information contained in bibliographic databases has
recently boosted the use of citations, and other indicators based on citation
numbers, as tools for the quantitative assessment of scientific research.
Citations counts are often interpreted as proxies for the scientific influence
of papers, journals, scholars, and institutions. However, a rigorous and
scientifically grounded methodology for a correct use of citation counts is
still missing. In particular, cross-disciplinary comparisons in terms of raw
citation counts systematically favors scientific disciplines with higher
citation and publication rates. Here we perform an exhaustive study of the
citation patterns of millions of papers, and derive a simple transformation of
citation counts able to suppress the disproportionate citation counts among
scientific domains. We find that the transformation is well described by a
power-law function, and that the parameter values of the transformation are
typical features of each scientific discipline. Universal properties of
citation patterns descend therefore from the fact that citation distributions
for papers in a specific field are all part of the same family of univariate

Concerted involvement of Cdx/Hox genes and Wnt signaling in morphogenesis of the caudal neural tube and cloacal derivatives from the posterior growth zone
Decrease in Cdx dosage in an allelic series of mouse Cdx mutants leads to progressively more severe posterior vertebral defects. These defects are corrected by posterior gain of function of the Wnt effector Lef1. Precocious expression of Hox paralogous 13 genes also induces vertebral axis truncation by antagonizing Cdx function. We report here that the phenotypic similarity also applies to patterning of the caudal neural tube and uro-rectal tracts in Cdx and Wnt3a mutants, and in embryos precociously expressing Hox13 genes. Cdx2 inactivation after placentation leads to posterior defects, including incomplete uro-rectal septation. Compound mutants carrying one active Cdx2 allele in the Cdx4-null background (Cdx2/4), transgenic embryos precociously expressing Hox13 genes and a novel Wnt3a hypomorph mutant all manifest a comparable phenotype with similar uro-rectal defects. Phenotype and transcriptome analysis in early Cdx mutants, genetic rescue experiments and gene expression studies lead us to propose that Cdx transcription factors act via Wnt signaling during the laying down of uro-rectal mesoderm, and that they are operative in an early phase of these events, at the site of tissue progenitors in the posterior growth zone of the embryo. Cdx and Wnt mutations and premature Hox13 expression also cause similar neural dysmorphology, including ectopic neural structures that sometimes lead to neural tube splitting at caudal axial levels. These findings involve the Cdx genes, canonical Wnt signaling and the temporal control of posterior Hox gene expression in posterior morphogenesis in the different embryonic germ layers.
