News about newspaper advertisers: To what extent can corporate advertising budgets predict editorial uptake and coverage of corporate press releases?

News value theory aims to predict a story’s chance of being selected for publication based on news factors and ascribed news values. News values can also predict the coverage of corporate press releases. For news decisions, a newspaper’s revenue model may force editors to consider whether the source of a press release is an advertising client, despite the ‘separation of church and state’. In addition, for business journalism, corporate press releases have become an increasingly important news source. This study combines news values and advertiser weight to predict news coverage of press releases of banks in the news of partly and fully advertising-funded newspapers in Switzerland. Results show that advertiser importance can explain press release coverage concerning article length and tone in few cases, but has no universal news value. Public relations material is also not used as editorial subsidy for news. Larger companies are more successful in terms of press release uptake. However, their articles consist of a greater share of non-public relations material. Thus, our findings confirm editorial independence instead of copy-paste or obsequious journalism

Severe left diaphragmatic hernia limits size of fetal left heart more than does right diaphragmatic hernia

ObjectivesTo assess whether severity of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) correlates with the degree of left heart hypoplasia and left ventricle (LV) output, and to determine if factors leading to abnormal fetal hemodynamics, such as compression and reduced LV preload, contribute to left heart hypoplasia.MethodsThis was a retrospective cross-sectional study of fetuses at 16-37 weeks' gestation that were diagnosed with CDH between 2000 and 2010. Lung-to-head ratio (LHR), liver position and side of the hernia were determined from stored ultrasound images. CDH severity was dichotomized based on LHR and liver position. The dimensions of mitral (MV) and aortic (AV) valves and LV were measured, and right and left ventricular outputs were recorded.ResultsIn total, 188 fetuses with CDH were included in the study, 171 with left CDH and 17 with right CDH. Fetuses with severe left CDH had a smaller MV (Z = -2.24 ± 1.3 vs -1.33 ± 1.08), AV (Z = -1.39 ± 1.21 vs -0.51 ± 1.05) and LV volume (Z = -4.23 ± -2.71 vs -2.08 ± 3.15) and had lower LV output (26 ± 10% vs 32 ± 10%) than those with mild CDH. MV and AV in fetuses with right CDH (MV, Z = -0.83 ± 1.19 and AV, Z = -0.71 ± 1.07) were larger than those in fetuses with left CDH, but LV outputs were similarly diminished, regardless of hernia side. Severe dextroposition and abnormal liver position were associated independently with smaller left heart, while LHR was not.ConclusionThe severity of left heart hypoplasia correlates with the severity of CDH. Altered fetal hemodynamics, leading to decreased LV output, occurs in both right- and left-sided CDH, but the additional compressive effect on the left heart is seen only when the hernia is left-sided. Improved knowledge of the physiology of this disease may lead to advances in therapy and better risk assessment for use in counseling affected families

Coincidence of congenital left-sided diaphragmatic hernia and ductus venosus agenesis: Relation between altered hemodynamic flow and lung-to-head-ratio?

Left-sided diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) as well as ductus venosus agenesis (ADV) are rare complex congenital malformations. We present a case of coincidence of these malformations and an abnormally high lung-head-ratio (LHR). The left-sided liver-up CDH and the ADV were diagnosed in prenatal ultrasound examination. In CDH cases lung volume is decreased due to the herniation of abdominal organs into the thorax. With 1.4 the LHR of our patient exceeded the normal ratio in liver-up CDH cases considerably. One explanation for this unusually high LHR might be an altered blood flow due to the coinciding ADV. In ADV cases less blood bypasses the lung through the foramen ovale. Consecutively pulmonary circulation is improved which may constitute as an advantage in CDH cases. Diagnosis, prognostic factors, physiology, and therapy strategy are discussed

A recently developed control method for multiphase induction machine drives termed the Brush-DC Equivalent control has presented a simpler control strategy that does not use any complex transformations. It has been implemented using a hysteresis current controller and in this paper, a delta modulated current control technique is presented. Delta modulation is proposed in to replace hysteresis control because hysteresis control uses a varying switching frequency which makes harmonic filtering and protection of the inverter difficult. A constant switching delta modulation scheme eliminates these challenges. It has inherent harmonic filtering giving better performance in terms of current and torque ripples. A Brush-DC controlled nine-phase cage rotor induction machine drive is used to investigate the implementation of the delta modulated current controller. The drive is simulated using Matlab/Simulink to determine its performance when stator voltages are used as feedback to the filter in the delta modulator
