Listener Quality Judgments of Narratives Produced by Children With and Without Localization-Related Epilepsy

The purpose of this study was to examine if listeners perceive differences in the narratives of children with and without localization-related epilepsy, and if these differences are greater in children with a longer history of epilepsy. Listener ratings were compared cross-sectionally in two sets of comparisons: children with recent-onset epilepsy (CWE-R) compared to typically-developing peers (TD-R), and children with chronic epilepsy (CWE-C) compared to another set of typically-developing peers (TD-C). Listeners assigned significantly lower overall quality, vocabulary, story structure, and grammar ratings to narratives produced by CWE-C than to those produced by TD-C, but there were no significant differences between ratings assigned to narratives produced by CWE-R and TD-R. These results imply that continued seizure activity, and/or its management, may impact listener perceptions of expressive language skills in children

Polycations XXII. Ru(bpy)2L2 and Ru(phen)2L2 Systems with Cationic 4,4’-Bipyridine Ligands: Syntheses, Characteristics, and Interactions with DNA

Earlier efforts have been concerned with the association of Ruthenium octahedral complexes with DNA. Since the positively charged ruthenium species has been found to associate with the electron rich major groove of double-stranded DNA, it was proposed the addition of cationic sites on the ligands attached to ruthenium would facilitate such association. Thus, we have synthesized several series of octahedral ruthenium complexes bearing ligands having within themselves cationic sites. These have been investigated in their interaction with calf thymus DNA using fluorescence titration analysis. The introduction of the cationic ligands has been found to exhibit enhanced association of the ruthenium (II) species with the DNA as compared to those without such ligands, in keeping with the original concept. This work leads us to conclude that this line of investigation can lead to useful pharmaceutical agents

Adsorption of 2,2 '-dithiodipyridine as a tool for the assembly of silver nanoparticles

Silver nanostructured thin films stabilized by 2,2’-dithiodipyridine (2dtpy) were prepared. The Ag nanoparticles were obtained by treating the complex [Ag(2dtpy)]NO3 with NaBH4 in a methanol–toluene mixture. The films were transferred to borosilicate glass slips by a dip-coating method and were found to consist of Ag nanoparticles possibly linked via 2dtpy molecules. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies have offered the possibility of investigating the adsorption modes of 2dtpy at the Ag nanoparticle surfaces in the fil

Resonance raman studies of a c type algal cytochrome deuterium shifts and a comparison with mammalian cytochrome c

A c type cytochrome isolated from Synechococcus lividus grown on water and 2H2O media, has been studied by resonance Raman spectroscopy. The spectra were taken on the oxidized and reduced protein with excitation within the Soret band at 441.6 nm to determine whether individual resonance Raman bands of the heme shift upon deuterium substitution and also to provide a comparison with the spectra of horse heart cytochrome c.Some of the shifts observed with the deuterated heme c are larger than the corresponding shifts in meso-deuterated metalloporphyrins suggesting mixing of peripheral substituent vibrations with the skeletal modes of the porphyrin macrocycle. The algal cytochrome exhibits resonance Raman spectra roughly similar to those of horse heart cytochrome c, consistent with its optical absorption spectra which is typical of c type cytochromes, although a detailed comparison reveals note-worthy differences between the spectra of the two proteins; this may be a reflection of the effect of non-methionine ligands and protein environment of the vibrations of the c type heme in the algal cytochrome.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/21718/1/0000110.pd
