Wavelength-Scale Imaging of Trapped Ions using a Phase Fresnel lens

A microfabricated phase Fresnel lens was used to image ytterbium ions trapped in a radio frequency Paul trap. The ions were laser cooled close to the Doppler limit on the 369.5 nm transition, reducing the ion motion so that each ion formed a near point source. By detecting the ion fluorescence on the same transition, near diffraction limited imaging with spot sizes of below 440 nm (FWHM) was achieved. This is the first demonstration of imaging trapped ions with a resolution on the order of the transition wavelength.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

How will having a W.I.N room for our Emotional and Behavioral Disorder students to access when they are needing a break affects the number of room-clearing behaviors in a week?

Having the power to create the behavior program from the ground up, starting a “What I Need” (W.I.N) room at the elementary school where the researcher works. This is a sensory type of room with different tools and strategies that the students can use to calm their bodies or as we say have a safe and calm body. This room will be run by the researcher along with a paraprofessional that will be in the room all day to help support the students. This paraprofessional will also supervise the W.I.N Room if the researcher needs to leave to handle a behavior. This room goes hand and hand with self-regulation skills. As the tools and strategies that will be taught/used are self-regulation strategies. Within this room we also will have spaces for students to complete their work if they need a quiet place to work, a less distracting environment or a little extra support. The students also take scheduled breaks in the room that are guided, and routine driven so that the students know what to expect and what their job is when they come for a break. Every student\u27s scheduled break does look different as their needs are all very different

Control and Fairness in Customer Service

Using the concept of “role theories”, the notions of fairness, freedom versus control, and psychological reactance this article examines how these human factors interact in quick service restaurant (QSR) encounters. This research measures the degree of improvement in customer satisfaction as choices offered to customers, employees’ involvement and speed of delivery, vary. Compensatory effects between control and fairness indicate that QSR chains with a strong tradition of control could introduce fairness attributes into the service encounter and increase customer satisfaction without substantially changing existing operating processes. Traditional QSR models may improve competitiveness and strengthen brand image by developing a stronger emotional connection with their customers. New avenues in front-line employee training could emerge, potentially leading to higher employee satisfaction

High-Q measurements of fused-silica microspheres in the near infrared

Measurements of the quality factor Q ~ 8 x 10^9 are reported for the whispering-gallery modes (WGM’s) of quartz microspheres for the wavelengths 670, 780, and 850 nm; these results correspond to finesse F ~ 2.2 x 10^6. The observed independence of Q from wavelength indicates that losses for the WGM’s are dominated by a mechanism other than bulk absorption in fused silica in the near infrared. Data obtained by atomic force microscopy combined with a simple model for surface scattering suggest that Q can be limited by residual surface inhomogeneities. Absorption by absorbed water can also explain why the material limit is not reached at longer wavelengths in the near infrared
