Bright soliton trains of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We variationally determine the dynamics of bright soliton trains composed of
harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interatomic
interactions. In particular, we obtain the interaction potential between two
solitons. We also discuss the formation of soliton trains due to the quantum

Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions on a ring
Considering an effectively attractive quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein
condensate of atoms confined in a toroidal trap, we find that the system
undergoes a phase transition from a uniform to a localized state, as the
magnitude of the coupling constant increases. Both the mean-field
approximation, as well as a diagonalization scheme are used to attack the

Effectively attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating toroidal trap
We examine an effectively attractive quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein
condensate of atoms confined in a rotating toroidal trap, as the magnitude of
the coupling constant and the rotational frequency are varied. Using both a
variational mean-field approach, as well as a diagonalization technique, we
identify the phase diagram between a uniform and a localized state and we

Soliton response to transient trap variations
The response of bright and dark solitons to rapid variations in an expulsive
longitudinal trap is investigated. We concentrate on the effect of transient
changes in the trap frequency in the form of temporal delta kicks and the
hyperbolic cotangent functions. Exact expressions are obtained for the soliton
profiles. This is accomplished using the fact that a suitable linear
Schrodinger stationary state solution in time can be effectively combined with
the solutions of non-linear Schrodinger equation, for obtaining solutions of
the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time dependent scattering length in a
harmonic trap. Interestingly, there is rapid pulse amplification in certain
scenarios
Collapse of triaxial bright solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates
We study triaxial bright solitons made of attractive Bose-condensed atoms
characterized by the absence of confinement in the longitudinal axial direction
but trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential in the transverse plane. By
numerically solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we
investigate the effect of the transverse trap anisotropy on the critical
interaction strength above which there is the collapse of the condensate. The
comparison with previous predictions [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 66}, 043619 (2002)]

Mountain Lakes: Eyes on Global Environmental Change
Mountain lakes are often situated in protected natural areas, a feature that leads to their role as sentinels of global environmental change. Despite variations in latitude, mountain lakes share many features, including their location in catchments with steep topographic gradients, cold temperatures, high incident solar and ultraviolet radiation (UVR), and prolonged ice and snow cover. These characteristics, in turn, affect mountain lake ecosystem structure, diversity, and productivity. The lakes themselves are mostly small, and up until recently, have been characterized as oligotrophic. This paper provides a review and update of the growing body of research that shows that sediments in remote mountain lakes archive regional and global environmental changes, including those linked to climate change, altered biogeochemical cycles, and changes in dust composition and deposition, atmospheric fertilization, and biological manipulations. These archives provide an important record of global environmental change that pre-dates typical monitoring windows. Paleolimnological research at strategically selected lakes has increased our knowledge of interactions among multiple stressors and their synergistic effects on lake systems. Lakes from transectsacross steep climate (i.e., temperature and effective moisture) gradients in mountain regions show how environmental change alters lakes in close proximity, but at differing climate starting points. Such research in particular highlights the impacts of melting glaciers on mountain lakes. The addition of new proxies, including DNA-based techniques and advanced stable isotopic analyses, provides a gateway to addressing novel research questions about global environmental change. Recent advances in remote sensing and continuous, high-frequency, limnological measurements will improve spatial and temporal resolution and help to add records to spatial gaps including tropical and southern latitudes. Mountain lake records provide a unique opportunity for global scale assessments that provide knowledge necessary to protect the Earth system
Theory of Multidimensional Solitons
We review a number of topics germane to higher-dimensional solitons in
Bose-Einstein condensates. For dark solitons, we discuss dark band and planar
solitons; ring dark solitons and spherical shell solitons; solitary waves in
restricted geometries; vortex rings and rarefaction pulses; and multi-component
Bose-Einstein condensates. For bright solitons, we discuss instability,
stability, and metastability; bright soliton engineering, including pulsed atom
lasers; solitons in a thermal bath; soliton-soliton interactions; and bright

Successful radiation treatment of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma metastatic to the right cardiac atrium and ventricle in a pacemaker-dependent patient
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare, aggressive malignancy, which is known to metastasize to the heart. We report a case of a patient with ATC with metastatic involvement of the pacemaker leads within the right atrium and right ventricle. The patient survived external beam radiation treatment to his heart, with a radiographic response to treatment. Cardiac metastases are usually reported on autopsy; to our knowledge, this is the first report of the successful treatment of cardiac metastases encasing the leads of a pacemaker, and of cardiac metastases from ATCs, with a review of the pertinent literature
Revealing the Appetite of the Marine Aquarium Fish Trade: The Volume and Biodiversity of Fish Imported into the United States
The aquarium trade and other wildlife consumers are at a crossroads forced by threats from global climate change and other anthropogenic stressors that have weakened coastal ecosystems. While the wildlife trade may put additional stress on coral reefs, it brings income into impoverished parts of the world and may stimulate interest in marine conservation. To better understand the influence of the trade, we must first be able to quantify coral reef fauna moving through it. Herein, we discuss the lack of a data system for monitoring the wildlife aquarium trade and analyze problems that arise when trying to monitor the trade using a system not specifically designed for this purpose. To do this, we examined an entire year of import records of marine tropical fish entering the United States in detail, and discuss the relationship between trade volume, biodiversity and introduction of non-native marine fishes. Our analyses showed that biodiversity levels are higher than previous estimates. Additionally, more than half of government importation forms have numerical or other reporting discrepancies resulting in the overestimation of trade volumes by 27%. While some commonly imported species have been introduced into the coastal waters of the USA (as expected), we also found that some uncommon species in the trade have also been introduced. This is the first study of aquarium trade imports to compare commercial invoices to government forms and provides a means to, routinely and in real time, examine the biodiversity of the trade in coral reef wildlife species
