Knowledge practices in design: The role of visual representations as 'epistemic objects'
We use a detailed study of the knowledge work around visual representations to draw attention to the multidimensional nature of `objects'. Objects are variously described in the literatures as relatively stable or in flux; as abstract or concrete; and as used within or across practices. We clarify these dimensions, drawing on and extending the literature on boundary objects, and connecting it with work on epistemic and technical objects. In particular, we highlight the epistemic role of objects, using our observations of knowledge work on an architectural design project to show how, in this setting, visual representations are characterized by a `lack' or incompleteness that precipitates unfolding. The conceptual design of a building involves a wide range of technical, social and aesthetic forms of knowledge that need to be developed and aligned. We explore how visual representations are used, and how these are meaningful to different stakeholders, eliciting their distinct contributions. As the project evolves and the drawings change, new issues and needs for knowledge work arise. These objects have an `unfolding ontology' and are constantly in flux, rather than fully formed. We discuss the implications for wider understandings of objects in organizations and for how knowledge work is achieved in practice

A rhetoric-in-context approach to building commitment to multiple strategic goals
There are still few explanations of the micro-level practices by which top managers influence employee commitment to multiple strategic goals. This paper argues that, through their language, top managers can construct a context for commitment to multiple strategic goals. We therefore propose a rhetoric-in-context approach to illuminate some of the micro practices through which top managers influence employee commitment. Based upon an empirical study of the rhetorical practices through which top managers influence academic commitment to multiple strategic goals in university contexts, we demonstrate relationships between rhetoric and context. Specifically, we show that rhetorical influences over commitment to multiple goals are associated with the historical context for multiple goals, the degree to which top managers' rhetoric instantiates a change in that context, and the internal consistency of the rhetorical practices used by top managers. "'Asianness Under Construction:' The Contours and Negotiation of Panethnic Identity/Culture among Interethnically Married Asian Americans."
Based on life-history interviews of interethnically married U.S.-raised Asians, this article examines
the meaning and dynamics of Asian American interethnic marriages, and what they reveal about
the complex incorporative process of this âin-betweenâ racial minority group into the U.S.. In
particular, this article explores the connection between Asian American interethnic marriage
and pan-Asian consciousness/identity, both in terms of how panethnicity shapes romantic/
marital desires of individuals and how pan-Asian culture and identity is invented and negotiated
in the process of family-making. My findings indicate that while strong pan-Asian consciousness/
identity underlies the connection among intermarried couples, these unions are not simply
a defensive effort to âpreserveâ Asian-ethnic identity and cultur against a society that still
racializes Asian Americans, but a tentative and often unpremeditated effort to navigate a path
toward integration into the society through an ethnically based, albeit hybrid and reconstructed
identity and culture, that helps the respondents retain the integrity of âAsianness.

âAt âAmen Mealsâ Itâs Me and Godâ Religion and Gender: A New Jewish Womenâs Ritual
New ritual practices performed by Jewish women can serve as test cases for an examination of the phenomenon of the creation of religious rituals by women. These food-related rituals, which have been termed ââamen mealsââ were developed in Israel beginning in the year 2000 and subsequently spread to Jewish women in Europe and the United States. This study employs a qualitative-ethnographic methodology grounded in participant-observation and in-depth interviews to describe these nonobligatory, extra-halakhic rituals. What makes these rituals stand out is the womenâs sense that through these rituals they experience a direct con- nection to God and, thus, can change reality, i.e., bring about jobs, marriages, children, health, and salvation for friends and loved ones. The ââamenââ rituals also create an open, inclusive womanâs space imbued with strong spiritualâemotional energies that counter the womenâs religious marginality. Finally, the purposes and functions of these rituals, including identity building and displays of cultural capital, are considered within a theoretical framework that views ââdoing genderââ and ââdoing religionââ as an integrated experience

Resumo Este artigo apresenta um recorte de uma investigação mais ampla, realizada no contexto de uma tese de doutoramento, cujo propĂłsito Ă© interrogar as potencialidades e os limites da implementação das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) como ĂĄrea de formação transdisciplinar. Trata-se de um estudo desenvolvido a partir de um enfoque qualitativo, compatĂvel com a abordagem fenomenolĂłgica, que procurou captar o significado que um grupo de alunos do ensino bĂĄsico atribuiu a uma experiĂȘncia de ensino integrado, baseada no envolvimento de professores de diversas disciplinas escolares. Para tanto, analisou-se o conteĂșdo de entrevistas realizadas com alunos, nas quais figuram as suas representaçÔes sobre a experiĂȘncia vivenciada e as suas ideias no Ăąmbito da temĂĄtica em causa, incluindo um conjunto de sugestĂ”es de melhoria para situaçÔes futuras. Conclui-se que, apesar da importĂąncia atribuĂda Ă s TIC enquanto ĂĄrea de formação transdisciplinar, o modelo curricular de matriz disciplinar constitui um paradigma difĂcil de ser quebrado, inclusive por alunos, que nĂŁo descartaram a possibilidade de se manter um espaço e um tempo especĂficos para a aprendizagem sobre tecnologias
