    We report experiments demonstrating circular dichroism in the x-ray-fluorescence spectra of magnetic systems, as predicted by a recent theory. The data, on the L_{2,3} edges of ferromagnetic iron, are compared with fully relativistic local spin density functional calculations, and the relationship between the dichroic spectra and the spin-resolved local density of occupied states is discussed

    The assessment of the Spacelab carrier induced contaminant environment was continued, and the ability of Spacelab to meet established contamination control criteria for the space transportation system program was determined. The primary areas considered included: (1) updating, refining, and improving the Spacelab contamination computer model and contamination analysis methodology, (2) establishing the resulting adjusted induced environment predictions for comparison with the applicable criteria, (3) determining the Spacelab design and operational requirements necessary to meet the criteria, (4) conducting mission feasibility analyses of the combined Spacelab/Orbiter contaminant environment for specific proposed mission and payload mixes, and (5) establishing a preliminary Spacelab mission support plan as well as model interface requirements; A summary of those activities conducted to date with respect to the modelling, analysis, and predictions of the induced environment, including any modifications in approach or methodology utilized in the contamination assessment of the Spacelab carrier, was presented

    A preliminary assessment of the computer interface requirements of the Spacelab configuration contamination computer model was conducted to determine the compatibility of the program, as presently formatted, with the computer facilities at MSFC. The necessary Spacelab model modifications are pointed out. The MSFC computer facilities and their future plans are described, and characteristics of the various computers as to availability and suitability for processing the contamination program are discussed. A listing of the CDC 6000 series and UNIVAC 1108 characteristics is presented so that programming requirements can be compared directly and differences noted

    Foraging Economics of the Hunt Bumble Bee, a Viable Pollinator for Commercial Agriculture

    Globally, there are only five bumble bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Bombus) species that have been successfully commercialized for agriculture. The Hunt bumble bee, Bombus huntii Green, 1860, has been recognized as a suitable pollinator of crops and has a broad distribution in western North America, making it a viable candidate for commercialization. In this study, our goal was to characterize the foraging dynamics of B. huntii female workers under open field conditions. To accomplish this goal, we monitored three B. huntii colonies over an 8-wk period in the summer of 2012 in northern Utah. Using marked bees, we studied the relationship between foraging duration/offloading and pollen/nonvisible pollen collection. In total, we observed 921 foraging events across all three colonies. Of our observations, 82% (n = 756) were foraging events that included both a departure and arrival time observation. Average duration of pollen and nonpollen (i.e., nectar) trips across foragers is 41.86 ± 5.65 min (±SE) and 32.18 ± 5.89 min, respectively. Workers spent a significantly longer time offloading pollen in the nest after a foraging trip relative to workers without pollen present on their corbicula. Pollen foraging rate increases over the course of the day, likely due to the time it takes to learn how to forage on a diverse array of flower morphologies. Our study provides data on how long it takes for B. huntii to forage in open field conditions and will be useful when comparing foraging rates in controlled crop systems

    Firm level factors that affect returns to real estate investment trusts

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2000.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 72-73).This thesis examines the historical financial data for publicly traded securities issued by Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITS). The inquiry isolates certain quantifiable firm specific financial data and organizes that data into pooled, time-series cross-sections. Annual returns to capital are determined for certain equity REITS from 1990 to 1999 and are used as the dependent variable in a statistical regression analysis. The analysis includes independent variables drawn from a database and includes variables to adjust results for the impact of macroeconomic factors. In addition, indexes for the broader markets are identified and included in the regressions to adjust for the impact of trends in the general market. Following adjustments for macroeconomic factors and general market trends the regression results identify various firm specific variables that display a statistically significant relationship to relative returns to capital in REIT securities over time. Negative impacts on returns are observed for increases in firm size and for certain debt features such as variable rate debt, unsecured debt, and total debt. Positive impacts on returns are associated with higher levels of asset growth as well as relatively higher levels of secured debt and preferred stock. The expected positive correlation of returns with increases in broader stock market indexes and negative correlation with increasing short-term interest rates is not displayed. For the period from 1993 to 1999, the data indicate an inverse correlation of REIT returns to the stock market as represented by the S&P 500 index and a direct relation with short-term interest rates. Interpretations of the results are provided in a form that relates the firm level determinates of returns to capital with the history of REITS and their organizational and tax characteristics.
