Young Adults, Social Networks, and Addiction Recovery: Post Treatment Changes in Social Ties and Their Role as a Mediator of 12-Step Participation
Background: Social factors play a key role in addiction recovery. Research with adults indicates individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) benefit from mutual-help organizations (MHOs), such as Alcoholics Anonymous, via their ability to facilitate adaptive network changes. Given the lower prevalence of sobriety-conducive, and sobriety-supportive, social contexts in the general population during the life-stage of young adulthood, however, 12-step MHOs may play an even more crucial recovery-supportive social role for young adults, but have not been investigated. Greater knowledge could enhance understanding of recovery-related change and inform young adults’ continuing care recommendations. Methods: Emerging adults (N = 302; 18–24 yrs; 26% female; 95% White) enrolled in a study of residential treatment effectiveness were assessed at intake, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months on 12-step attendance, peer network variables (“high [relapse] risk” and “low [relapse] risk” friends), and treatment outcomes (Percent Days Abstinent; Percent Days Heavy Drinking). Hierarchical linear models tested for change in social risk over time and lagged mediational analyses tested whether 12-step attendance conferred recovery benefits via change in social risk. Results: High-risk friends were common at treatment entry, but decreased during follow-up; low-risk friends increased. Contrary to predictions, while substantial recovery-supportive friend network changes were observed, this was unrelated to 12-step participation and, thus, not found to mediate its positive influence on outcome. Conclusions: Young adult 12-step participation confers recovery benefit; yet, while encouraging social network change, 12-step MHOs may be less able to provide social network change directly for young adults, perhaps because similar-aged peers are less common in MHOs. Findings highlight the importance of both social networks and 12-step MHOs and raise further questions as to how young adults benefit from 12-step MHOs

Optimal interactions of light with magnetic and electric resonant particles
This work studies the limits of far and near-field electromagnetic response
of sub-wavelength scatterers, like the unitary limit and of lossless
scatterers, and the ideal absorption limit of lossy particles. These limit
behaviors are described in terms of analytic formulas that approximate finite
size effects while rigorously including radiative corrections. This analysis
predicts the electric and/or magnetic limit responses of both metallic and
dielectric nanoparticles while quantitatively describing near-field
enhancements.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
Critical temperature of a fully anisotropic three-dimensional Ising model
The critical temperature of a three-dimensional Ising model on a simple cubic
lattice with different coupling strengths along all three spatial directions is
calculated via the transfer matrix method and a finite size scaling for L x L
oo clusters (L=2 and 3). The results obtained are compared with available
calculations. An exact analytical solution is found for the 2 x 2 oo Ising
chain with fully anisotropic interactions (arbitrary J_x, J_y and J_z).Comment: 17 pages in tex using preprint.sty for IOP journals, no figure
Stein structures and holomorphic mappings
We prove that every continuous map from a Stein manifold X to a complex
manifold Y can be made holomorphic by a homotopic deformation of both the map
and the Stein structure on X. In the absence of topological obstructions the
holomorphic map may be chosen to have pointwise maximal rank. The analogous
result holds for any compact Hausdorff family of maps, but it fails in general
for a noncompact family. Our main results are actually proved for smooth almost
complex source manifolds (X,J) with the correct handlebody structure. The paper
contains another proof of Eliashberg's (Int J Math 1:29--46, 1990) homotopy
characterization of Stein manifolds and a slightly different explanation of the
construction of exotic Stein surfaces due to Gompf (Ann Math 148 (2):619--693,
1998; J Symplectic Geom 3:565--587, 2005). (See also the related preprint

Intelligent sampling for the measurement of structured surfaces
Uniform sampling in metrology has known drawbacks such as coherent spectral aliasing and a lack of efficiency in terms of measuring time and data storage. The requirement for intelligent sampling strategies has been outlined over recent years, particularly where the measurement of structured surfaces is concerned. Most of the present research on intelligent sampling has focused on dimensional metrology using coordinate-measuring machines with little reported on the area of surface metrology. In the research reported here, potential intelligent sampling strategies for surface topography measurement of structured surfaces are investigated by using numerical simulation and experimental verification. The methods include the jittered uniform method, low-discrepancy pattern sampling and several adaptive methods which originate from computer graphics, coordinate metrology and previous research by the authors. By combining the use of advanced reconstruction methods and feature-based characterization techniques, the measurement performance of the sampling methods is studied using case studies. The advantages, stability and feasibility of these techniques for practical measurements are discussed
Long ago, in 1971 the possibility of the existence of a fullerene molecule was predicted by an young Japanese scientist E. Osawa. Then two Soviet chemists and theorists D.A. Bochvar and E.G. Hal pern confirm the stability of the C60 molecule using quantum chemical calculations, and in 1985 at last R. Smalley, R. Curl and H. Kroto experimentally obtained clusters of 60 carbon atoms in a sustainable form. They explained the structure of this molecule as the structure of a soccer ball.
