Dividend Distribution Proposals: The Dividends Received Deductions by Corporations and Related Matters

    Get PDF
Professor Blum advocates repeal of the earnings and profits limitation on dividend income. Professor Blum traces some of the early history and concludes that taxing most corporate distributions of a corporation would eliminate a needless intermediate step of defining earnings and profits, which serves only to complicate the double-tax regime. Mr. Stone opposes repeal of the earnings and profits concept to deal with Wall Street gimmicks and recommends a move toward a fundamental change in corporate taxation, including a system of integration where the impact of the two-tiered tax on corporate income would give way to some type of single-tax scheme

Candidates in the upcoming 2018 US House election should communicate consistent and clear policy positions to maximize votes

Communication strategies matter in elections. Candidates can be ambiguous in how they speak to the public by avoiding clear positions and strong statements or they can communicate by taking clear and consistent stances on issues. How do voters respond to these different strategies? In new research Christine Cahill and Walter J. Stone find that voters tend to feel more negatively about candidates who are more ambiguous in their statements. With this in mind, they argue that candidates in the upcoming 2018 election should clearly and consistently communicate their policy positions to the electorate in order to maximize their chance of winning

Dark London: Dimensions and characteristics of dark tourism supply in the UK capital

    Get PDF
This paper will investigate the characteristics of the supply of dark tourism in London, UK through an examination of the identified main dark sites in London, UK. Our methodology is based on web analysis of the presence of marketed and non-marketed dark tourist sites in London, their web visitation, the level of their commercialisation and the characteristics which place them in the various scales as categorised in current literature, notably Stone (2006). We identified that London offers a much more entertainment focussed tourism experience rather than accurate historical and authentic sites which utilised major aspects of dark tourism for purposes such as commemoration or remembrance. The authors found this surprising given London’s long and often dark history

Ground-penetrating radar and shallow-seismic profiles coupled with sediment cores and radiocarbon dates provide an 8000-year evolutionary history of this barrier system in response to changes in sediment sources and supply rates as well as variability in the rate of sea-level change. The barrier sequence overlies tills of Wisconsinan and Illinoian glaciations as well as late Pleistocene glaciomarine clay deposited during the post-glacial sea-level highstand at approximately 17 ka. Holocene sediment began accumulating at the site of Plum Island at 7–8 ka, in the form of coarse fluvial channel-lag deposits related to the 50-m wide erosional channel of the Parker River that carved into underlying glaciomarine deposits during a lower stand of sea level. Plum Island had first developed in its modern location by ca. 3.6 ka through onshore migration and vertical accretion of reworked regressive and lowstand deposits. The prevalence of southerly, seaward-dipping layers indicates that greater than 60% of the barrier lithosome developed in its modern location through southerly spit progradation, consistent with a dominantly longshore transport system driven by northeast storms. Thinner sequences of northerly, landward-dipping clinoforms represent the northern recurve of the prograding spit. A 5–6-m thick inlet-fill sequence was identified overlying the lower stand fluvial deposit; its stratigraphy captures events of channel migration, ebb-delta breaching, onshore bar migration, channel shoaling and inlet infilling associated with the migration and eventual closing of the inlet. This inlet had a maximum cross-sectional area of 2800 m2 and was active around 3.5–3.6 ka. Discovery of this inlet suggests that the tidal prism was once larger than at present. Bay infilling, driven by the import of sediment into the backbarrier environment through tidal inlets, as well as minor sediment contribution from local rivers, led to a vast reduction in the bay tidal prism. This study demonstrates that, prior to about 3 ka, Plum Island and its associated marshes, tidal flats, and inlets were in a paraglacial environment; that is, their main source of sediment was derived from the erosion and reworking of glaciogenic deposits. Since that time, Plum Island has been in a state of dynamic equilibrium with its non-glacial sediment sources and therefore can be largely considered to be in a stable, “post-paraglacial” state. This study is furthermore the first in the Gulf of Maine to show that spit accretion and inlet processes were the dominant mechanisms in barrier island formation and thus serves as a foundation for future investigations of barrier development in response to backbarrier infilling. This study was funded by the Minerals Management Service (now the “Bureau of Ocean Energy Manegement, Regulation and Enforcement”), the USGS Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center, the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (State Map), a Geological Society of America (GSA) Student Research Grant, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Grants-in-Aid program, and the Boston University Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Unveiling the nature of INTEGRAL objects through optical spectroscopy. IV. A study of six new hard X-ray sources

We present further results from our ongoing optical spectrophotometric campaign at the Astronomical Observatory of Bologna in Loiano (Italy) on unidentified hard X-ray sources detected by INTEGRAL. We observed spectroscopically the putative optical counterparts of the INTEGRAL sources IGR J00234+6141, IGR J01583+6713, IGR J06074+2205, IGR J13091+1137 and IGR J20286+2544. We find that the first two are Galactic objects, namely a Cataclysmic Variable at a distance of about 300 pc and a Be/X transient High-Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) located at about 6.4 kpc, respectively, whereas the last one is identified with MCG +04-48-002, a Starburst/HII galaxy at redshift z = 0.013 hiding a Seyfert 2 nucleus. We identify IGR J13091+1137 as the (likely Seyfert 2 type) active nucleus of galaxy NGC 4992, which we classify as an X-ray Bright, Optically Normal Galaxy; this is the first example of this type of object to be detected by INTEGRAL, and one of the closest of this class. We moreover confirm the possible Be/X nature of IGR J06074+2205, and we estimate it to be at a distance of about 1 kpc. We also reexamine the spectrum of the z = 0.087 elliptical radio galaxy PKS 0352-686, the possible counterpart of the INTEGRAL source IGR J03532-6829, and we find that it is a BL Lac. Physical parameters for these sources are also evaluated by discussing our findings in the context of the available multiwavelength information. These identifications further stress the importance of INTEGRAL in the study of the hard X-ray spectrum of Active Galactic Nuclei, HMXBs and Cataclysmic Variables.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication on A&A, main journal. Class I major histocompatibility complexes loaded by a periodate trigger

Class I major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) present peptide ligands on the cell surface for recognition by appropriate cytotoxic T cells. The unstable nature of unliganded MHC necessitates the production of recombinant class I complexes through in vitro refolding reactions in the presence of an added excess of peptides. This strategy is not amenable to high-throughput production of vast collections of class I complexes. To address this issue, we recently designed photocaged MHC ligands that can be cleaved by a UV light trigger in the MHC bound state under conditions that do not affect the integrity of the MHC structure. The results obtained with photocaged MHC ligands demonstrate that conditional MHC ligands can form a generally applicable concept for the creation of defined peptide−MHCs. However, the use of UV exposure to mediate ligand exchange is unsuited for a number of applications, due to the lack of UV penetration through cell culture systems and due to the transfer of heat upon UV irradiation, which can induce evaporation. To overcome these limitations, here, we provide proof-of-concept for the generation of defined peptide−MHCs by chemical trigger-induced ligand exchange. The crystal structure of the MHC with the novel chemosensitive ligand showcases that the ligand occupies the expected binding site, in a conformation where the hydroxyl groups should be reactive to periodate. We proceed to validate this technology by producing peptide−MHCs that can be used for T cell detection. The methodology that we describe here should allow loading of MHCs with defined peptides in cell culture devices, thereby permitting antigen-specific T cell expansion and purification for cell therapy. In addition, this technology will be useful to develop miniaturized assay systems for performing high-throughput screens for natural and unnatural MHC ligands
