    Ash aggregation during the 11 February 2010 partial dome collapse of the Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

    On 11 February 2010, Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, underwent a partial dome collapse (~ 50 × 106 m3) and a short-lived Vulcanian explosion towards the end. Three main pyroclastic units were identified N and NE of the volcano: dome-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits, fountain-collapse PDC deposits formed by the Vulcanian explosion, and tephra-fallout deposits associated with elutriation from the dome-collapse and fountain-collapse PDCs (i.e. co-PDC fallout deposit). The fallout associated with the Vulcanian explosion was mostly dispersed E and SE by high altitude winds. All units N and NE of the volcano contain variable amounts and types of particle aggregates, although the co-PDC fallout deposit is associated with the largest abundance (i.e. up to 24 wt%). The size of aggregates found in the co-PDC fallout deposit increases with distance from the volcano and proximity to the sea, reaching a maximum diameter of 12 mm about 500 m from the coast. The internal grain size of all aggregates have nearly identical distributions (with Mdϕ ≈ 4–5), with particles in the size categories > 3 ϕ (i.e. < 250 μm) being distributed in similar proportions within the aggregates but in different proportions within distinct internal layers. In fact, most aggregates are characterized by a coarse grained central core occupying the main part of the aggregate, coated by a thin layer of finer ash (single-layer aggregates), while others have one or two additional layers accreted over the core (multiple-layer aggregates). Calculated aggregate porosity and settling velocity vary between 0.3 and 0.5 and 11–21 m s− 1, respectively. The aggregate size shows a clear correlation with both the core size and the size of the largest particles found in the core. The large abundance of aggregates in the co-PDC fallout deposits suggests that the buoyant plumes elutriated above PDCs represent an optimal environment for the formation (particle collision) and development (aggregate layering) of particle aggregates. However, specific conditions are required, including i) a large availability of water (in this case provided by the steam plumes associated with the entrance of PDCs into the ocean), ii) presence of plume regions with different grain-size features (i.e. both median size and sorting) that allows for the development of multiple layers, iii) strong turbulence that permits both particle collision and the transition of the aggregates through different plume regions, iv) presence of hot regions (e.g. PDCs) that promote aggregate preservation (in this case also facilitated by the presence of sea salt)

    Novel Clinical and Diagnostic Aspects of Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies

    Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) are the serological hallmark of some idiopathic systemic vasculitides. Besides the investigation of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) and constant effort for a standardized nomenclature and classification of the AAV, amain focus of research during the last few years has been to constantly improve the performance of enzyme immunoassays. With the latest so called third generation ELISA, this goal seemed to be fulfilled. The International Consensus Statement on Testing and Reporting of ANCA gave recommendations for standardized strategies for the serological diagnosis of ANCA. New developments now target the system immanent drawbacks of the respective diagnosticmethods, be it the need for batching and the long time to result for ELISA, or the high likelihood of error and subjectivity of indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). Randomaccess technology andmultiplexing for solid phase assays aswell as digital imaging for IIF are toolswhichmay help to expedite and simplify routine diagnostics in the lab and in emergency settings. Recent findings indicate that PR3-ANCA have clinical utility beyond the diagnosis of AAV. PR3-ANCA can also serve as an aid for the differentiation between ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CrD) and the stratification of UC patients. This review provides a detailed review of what is known about ANCA and highlights the latest research and state-of-the-art developments in this area

    PR3-ANCA:a promising biomarker in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS:The only recognized biomarker for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is atypical anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (aANCA), which, in addition to having low sensitivity and specificity, is an indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) test lacking the advantages of high throughput and objectivity. Recent reports have shown that antibodies to proteinase-3 (PR3-ANCA) might add diagnostic value in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically in ulcerative colitis (UC). As PSC is associated with IBD, the objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency and clinical significance of PR3-ANCA in a large cohort of patients. METHODS:A total of 244 PSC and 254 control [autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), hepatitis C viral infection (HCV), hepatitis B viral infection (HBV), and healthy controls] sera and their clinical correlations were retrospectively analyzed for PR3-ANCA determined by ELISA and a new chemiluminescence immunoassay (CIA). Testing was also performed for aANCA by IIF. RESULTS:When measured by CIA, PR3-ANCA was detected in 38.5% (94/244) of PSC patients compared to 10.6% (27/254) controls (p<0.0001). By ELISA, PR3-ANCA was detected in 23.4% (57/244) of PSC patients compared to 2.7% (6/254) controls (p<0.0001). PR3-ANCA in PSC patients was not associated with the presence or type of underlying IBD, and, in fact, it was more frequent in Crohn's disease (CD) patients with PSC than previously reported in CD alone. PR3-ANCA in PSC measured by CIA correlated with higher liver enzymes. CONCLUSION:PR3-ANCA is detected in a significant proportion of PSC patients compared to other liver diseases including PBC and AIH. PR3-ANCA is associated with higher liver enzyme levels in PSC, and is not solely related to underlying IBD

    Psychological wellbeing in parents of children with Down syndrome : a systematic review and meta-analysis

    We report a review examining the psychological wellbeing of parents of children with Down syndrome (DS) relative to that of parents of typically developing (TD) children. A systematic search identified 57 relevant studies, which were synthesised meta-analytically. Relative to their counterparts with TD children, mothers and fathers of children with DS reported higher levels of parenting stress (mothers: g = 0.57, 95% CI [0.33, 0.81]; fathers: g = 0.40, [0.24, 0.56]), depressive symptoms (mothers: g = 0.42, [0.23, 0.61]; fathers: g = 0.25, [0.02, 0.48]) and psychological distress (mothers: g = 0.45, [0.30, 0.60]; fathers: g = 0.63, [0.26, 0.99]). Small effects were found for anxiety for mothers (g = 0.16, [0.03, 0.29]), with no differences for fathers (g = 0.03, [−0.25, 0.32]). No group differences were found for positive impact of parenting (mothers: g = −0.09, [−0.25, 0.07]; fathers: g = −0.04, [−0.30, 0.22]), while evidence concerning other positive wellbeing outcomes was limited. No significant moderating effects of child age range, country income level, or group differences in parental education level were identified, but limited subgroup analyses were possible. Raising a child with DS may be associated with elevated stress, depressive symptoms, and psychological distress for mothers and fathers. However, levels of parenting reward appear equivalent to those experienced by parents raising TD children

    Inhomogeneous nucleation in quark hadron phase transition

    The effect of subcritical hadron bubbles on a first-order quark-hadron phase transition is studied. These subcritical hadron bubbles are created due to thermal fluctuations, and can introduce a finite amount of phase mixing (quark phase mixed with hadron phase) even at and above the critical temperature. For reasonable choices of surface tension and correlation length, as obtained from the lattice QCD calculations, we show that the amount of phase mixing at the critical temperature remains below the percolation threshold. Thus, as the system cools below the critical temperature, the transition proceeds through the nucleation of critical-size hadron bubbles from a metastable quark-gluon phase (QGP), within an inhomogeneous background populated by an equilibrium distribution of subcritical hadron bubbles. The inhomogeneity of the medium results in a substantial reduction of the nucleation barrier for critical bubbles. Using the corrected nucleation barrier, we estimate the amount of supercooling for different parameters controlling the phase transition, and briefly discuss its implications to cosmology and heavy-ion collisions.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages with 8 Postscript figures.     Neutron diffraction of hydrogen inclusion compounds under pressure

    When ice is compressed alongside a gas, crystalline 'host - guest' inclusion compounds known as gas clathrate hydrates form. These compounds are of interest not only for their environmental and possible technological impact as gas storage and separation materials, but also for their ability to probe networks not readily adopted by the pure `host' water molecules, and to study the interactions between water and gas molecules. Despite the pressure dependent crystal structures being fully determined for a large variety of `guest' gas species there is still relatively little known about the crystal structures in small guest gas systems such as H2 hydrate. The majority of structural studies have been done with x-ray diffraction and report a number of conflicting structures or hydrogen contents for the four known stable phases (sII, C0, C1 and C2). As this is a very hydrogen rich system the most ideal method to study the structure is neutron diffraction, which is able to fully determine the location of the hydrogen atoms within the structure and would allow a direct measurement of any hydrogen ordering within the host structure and the H2 content. In this work the phase diagram of the deuterated analogue of the H2-H2O system is explored at low pressures (below 0.3 GPa) with neutron diffraction. In the pressure/temperature region where the sII phase is known to be stable, two metastable phases were observed between the formation of sII from ice Ih and that this transition sequence occurred in line with Ostwald's Rule of Stages. One of these metastable phases was the C0 phase known to be stable in the H2-H2O system above 0.5 GPa, and the other is a new structure not previously observed in this system and is dubbed in this work as C-1 . Prior to this work the C0 phase has been reported with various structures that were determined with x-ray diffraction, and here the crystal structure and H2 content at low pressure are determined with neutron diffraction. The C0 phase was found to form a similar host structure to those of the previous studies with spiral guest sites but is best described with highly mobile H2 guests and a higher symmetry space group which make it the same structure as the spiral hydrate structure (s-Sp) recently observed in the CO2 hydrate system. In addition to this structure being determined at pressure a sample of C0 was also recovered to ambient pressure at low temperature and its structure/H2 content is presented as it was warmed to decomposition. The crystal structure of the C-1 phase was determined to be similar to ice Ih and a sample was recovered to ambient pressure to study its decomposition behaviour. Evidence for a similar structure in the helium hydrate system at low pressure is also reported here. This work was then extended to higher pressures with the recent developments of a hydrogen-compatible gas loader and large-volume diamond anvil cells. Several test experiments on gas-loaded Paris-Edinburgh presses are described on systems that are similar to hydrogen-water like urea-hydrogen and neon-water. And a further preliminary high pressure study on the deuterated analogue of the H2- H2O system in a diamond anvil cell between 3.6 and 28 GPa shows decomposition behaviour as pressure was increased

    From External Evaluation, to School Self-evaluation, to Peer Review

    Most modern systems of school education around the world now have highly developed evaluation processes. Following quickly in the wake of external evaluation policies have followed calls for schools to develop their own capacities for self-review. An OECD report (2013) describes a number of ways in which developing school evaluation capacity should be a priority for school improvement. Among the report’s suggestions are promoting peer learning among schools (pp. 469–470). This chapter describes the research on external evaluation, internal evaluation and the relationship between these two. It then moves on to define and describes peer review and chart its growth. The accountability dimension of peer review is also explored. Finally the existing evidence on peer review is presented from the vocational and schools sectors to show key findings so far, and key conditions for effective peer review are described

    Biosecurity and the ornamental fish trade: A stakeholder perspective in England

    The freshwater and marine ornamental fish industry is a primary route of hazard introduction and emergence, including aquatic animal diseases and non-native species. Prevention measures are key to reducing the risk of hazard incursion and establishment, but there is currently little understanding of the biosecurity practices and hazard responses implemented at post-border stages of the ornamental fish supply chain. This study addresses this knowledge gap, using questionnaires to collate information on actual biosecurity behaviours and hazard responses practised by ornamental fish retailers and hobbyist communities in England. Actual behaviours varied considerably within retailers and hobbyists, suggesting that reliance on preventative practices by individuals in the post-border stages of the ornamental fish supply chain is likely to be ineffective in minimizing the risk of hazard incursion and establishment. Resources should be allocated towards improving and enforcing robust pre- and at-border control measures, such as risk-based surveillance of ornamental fish imports at border controls. In addition, these findings should be used to implement targeted awareness-raising campaigns and help create directed training on biosecurity practices for individuals involved in the post-border stages of the ornamental supply chain
