    Disability in young people and adults after head injury: 12-14 year follow up of a prospective cohort

    Background: There is a need to establish how long term outcome evolves after head injury (HI) and factors related to this, to inform opportunities for intervention. Objective: To determine late outcome in adults 12-14 years after hospital admission for HI and to examine relationships between injury, early and late factors and disability. Methods: A prospective cohort with HI, whose outcome was reported previously at 1 and 5-7 years after injury were followed up after 12-14 years. Participants were assessed using structured and validated measures of disability (Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended), psychological well-being, alcohol use and health status. Results: Of 219 survivors followed-up at 5-7 years, 34 (15.5%) had died by 12-14 years. Disability remained common in survivors at 12-14 years (51%), as found at one and 5-7 years (53%). For those disabled at 1 year, outcome was dismal, with 80% dead or disabled at 12-14 years. Older age at injury, a premorbid history of brain illness or physical disability and post-injury low self-esteem and stress were associated with disability at 12-14 years. Disability changed between 5-7 and 12-14 years in 55% of survivors, improving in 23%. Late changes in disability between 5-7 and 12-14 years were associated with self-perceptions of locus of control as being 'powerful others' at 5-7 years. Conclusions: Disability is common 12-14 years after hospital admission with a head injury. For some there is a dynamic process of change in disability over time that is associated with self-perceptions of control that could be a target for intervention based research

    Urban stormwater carries a number of pathogens, nutrients, heavy metals, sediment, and other contaminants as surface runoff flows over land. The increase in impervious or paved surfaces associated with development in urban areas reduces the natural infiltration of precipitation into the ground. With impervious cover, precipitation collects and carries contaminants before draining into nearby surface waters. Stormwater runoff from paved surfaces in developed areas can degrade downstream waters with both contaminants and increased volumes of water. This publication aims to make information on innovative stormwater treatment technologies more available to New Hampshire’s urban planners, developers, and communities. Traditional runoff management techniques such as detention basins and infiltration swales may be preferable, but are not always practical for treating urban stormwater. Lack of space for natural solutions is often a problem in existing developed areas, making innovative treatment technologies an attractive alternative. Mostly designed for subsurface installation, urban “retrofits” use less space than conventional methods to treat stormwater. This manual provides information on the innovative stormwater “retrofit” technologies currently available for use in developed areas in New Hampshire

    The subject of this Thesis is Compression Paraple -, gia, a term which I use in the generally accepted sense of all those conditions in which there is pressure upon the cord, whether a true motor paraplegia in the narrower sense of the word, that is paralysis of the lower limbs, is present or not.The subject therefor; includes such conditions as spinal tumour, morbid conditions of the lepto- and pachymeninges, spinal caries, malignant disease of the spine and so on. It should also have embraced injuries to the spinal column, but I have excluded the consideration of traumatic paraplegia, my desire being to study more especially the more chronic forms of the condition.I have devoted particular attention to certain of these conditions, dealing only briefly with others, such as spina/ caries, since to have discussed these exhaustively would have led me into details of medicine and surgery outside the scope of neurology.PART I. I have divided the essay into two main divisions. In the first :I have endeavoured to correlate the signs and symptoms of the condition with the anatomy and physiology of the structures involved. It has been necessary to deal only quite briefly with the general anatomy of the spinal cord and the canal in which it lies and with the tracts and nerves concerned with motor functions. The sensory functions,however, demand somewhat fuller consideration. During the last few years a large. - mount of valuable work has been accomplished, notably by Head, well nigh revolutionising our conceptions of the subject.My own observations on compression paraplegia are fundamentally in accord with the main lines of modern research. I have therefore explained somewhat fully the grouping of the various sensory impulses in so far as they are concerned with the disorders under review, more especially the remarkable change which occurs in the cord as compared with the peripheral nervous system.The principle symptoms and signs of compression paraplegia are associated with the spinal roots,the cord itself and the spine. These symptoms are next discussed seriatim. In as much, however, as the involvement of these structures both in point of time and distribution varies remarkably according to the particular nature and site of the lesion. a spinal tumour, for instance, differing in its nature from that of a meningeal or vertebral affection - I have considered it advisable to deal with the symptoms from this point of view in a short section.To complete the symptomatology of the condition there remains yet to be described certain general symptoms such ae alterations iii the respiratory, cardiac and vasomotor systems and the consideration of the effect of the level of the lesion upon the symptomatology of any individual case. These are dealt with in a short chapter in which I have included the motor and sensory localisation of the spinal cord.PART II. In the second part I have considered more in detail the various extra -medullary disorders with which compression paraplegia may be associated.For this purpose I have collected and analysed a series of cases of compression paraplegia to Which I have added cases w} :.ch clinically simulated. compression paraplegia but which operation or post mortem examination proved to be due to other causes

    Supporting security-oriented, collaborative nanoCMOS electronics research

    Grid technologies support collaborative e-Research typified by multiple institutions and resources seamlessly shared to tackle common research problems. The rules for collaboration and resource sharing are commonly achieved through establishment and management of virtual organizations (VOs) where policies on access and usage of resources by collaborators are defined and enforced by sites involved in the collaboration. The expression and enforcement of these rules is made through access control systems where roles/privileges are defined and associated with individuals as digitally signed attribute certificates which collaborating sites then use to authorize access to resources. Key to this approach is that the roles are assigned to the right individuals in the VO; the attribute certificates are only presented to the appropriate resources in the VO; it is transparent to the end user researchers, and finally that it is manageable for resource providers and administrators in the collaboration. In this paper, we present a security model and implementation improving the overall usability and security of resources used in Grid-based e-Research collaborations through exploitation of the Internet2 Shibboleth technology. This is explored in the context of a major new security focused project at the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) at the University of Glasgow in the nanoCMOS electronics domain

    Relationship between resistivity and specific heat in a canonical non-magnetic heavy fermion alloy system: UPt_5-xAu_x

    UPt_(5-x)Au_x alloys form in a single crystal structure, cubic AuBe_5-type, over a wide range of concentrations from x = 0 to at least x = 2.5. All investigated alloys, with an exception for x = 2.5, were non-magnetic. Their electronic specific heat coefficient Îł\gamma varies from about 60 (x = 2) to about 700 mJ/mol K^2 (x = 1). The electrical resistivity for all alloys has a Fermi-liquid-like temperature variation, \rho = \rho_o + AT^2, in the limit of T -> 0 K. The coefficient A is strongly enhanced in the heavy-fermion regime in comparison with normal and transition metals. It changes from about 0.01 (x = 0) to over 2 micro-ohm cm/K^2 (x = 1). A/\gamma^2, which has been postulated to have a universal value for heavy-fermions, varies from about 10^-6 (x = 0, 0.5) to 10^-5 micro-ohm cm (mol K/mJ)^2 (x > 1.1), thus from a value typical of transition metals to that found for some other heavy-fermion metals. This ratio is unaffected, or only weakly affected, by chemical or crystallographic disorder. It correlates with the paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of the high temperature magnetic susceptibility.Comment: 5 pages, 5 eps figures, RevTe

    Observational constraints on an inflation model with a running mass

    We explore a model of inflation where the inflaton mass-squared is generated at a high scale by gravity-mediated soft supersymmetry breaking, and runs at lower scales to the small value required for slow-roll inflation. The running is supposed to come from the coupling of the inflaton to a non-Abelian gauge field. In contrast with earlier work, we do not constrain the magnitude of the supersymmetry breaking scale, and we find that the model might work even if squark and slepton masses come from gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. With the inflaton and gaugino masses in the expected range, and α=g2/4π\alpha = g^2/4\pi in the range 10−210^{-2} to 10−310^{-3} (all at the high scale) the model can give the observed cosmic microwave anisotropy, and a spectral index in the observed range.     Age and size at maturity: sex, environmental variability and developmental thresholds

    In most organisms, transitions between different life-history stages occur later and at smaller sizes as growth conditions deteriorate. Day and Rowe recently proposed that this pattern could be explained by the existence of developmental thresholds (minimum sizes or levels of condition below which transitions are unable to proceed). The developmental-threshold model predicts that the reaction norm of age and size at maturity will rotate in an anticlockwise manner from positive to a shallow negative slope if: (i) initial body size or condition is reduced; and/or (ii) some individuals encounter poor growth conditions at increasingly early developmental stages. We tested these predictions by rearing replicated populations of soil mites Sancassania berlesei (Michael) under different growth conditions. High-food environments produced a vertical relationship between age and size at maturity. The slope became increasingly shallow as food was reduced. By contrast, high food in the maternal environment reduced the slope of the reaction norm of age and size at maturity, whereas low food increased it. Overall, the reaction norm of age and size at maturity in S. berlesei was significantly nonlinear and differed for males and females.     Federated authentication and authorisation for e-science

    The Grid and Web service community are defining a range of standards for a complete solution for security. The National e-Science Centre (NeSC) at the University of Glasgow is investigating how the various pre-integration components work together in a variety of e-Science projects. The EPSRC-funded nanoCMOS project aims to allow electronics designers and manufacturers to use e-Science technologies and expertise to solve problems of device variability and its impact on system design. To support the security requirements of nanoCMOS, two NeSC projects (VPMan and OMII-SP) are providing tools to allow easy configuration of security infrastructures, exploiting previous successful projects using Shibboleth and PERMIS. This paper presents the model in which these tools interoperate to provide secure and simple access to Grid resources for non-technical users

    Historical weight estimating relationships were developed for the liquid rocket booster (LRB) using Saturn technology, and modified as required to support the EDIN05 study. Mission performance was computed using February 1975 shuttle configuration groundrules to allow reasonable comparison of the existing shuttle with the EDIN05 designs. The launch trajectory was constrained to pass through both the RTLS/AOA and main engine cut-off points. Performance analysis was based on a point design trajectory model which optimized initial tilt rate and exo-atmospheric pitch profile. A gravity turn was employed during the boost phase in place of the shuttle angle-of-attack profile. Engine throttling add/or shutdown was used to constrain dynamic pressure and/or longitudinal acceleration where necessary
