Project management techniques for highly integrated programs
The management and control of a representative, highly integrated high-technology project, in the X-29A aircraft flight test project is addressed. The X-29A research aircraft required the development and integration of eight distinct technologies in one aircraft. The project management system developed for the X-29A flight test program focuses on the dynamic interactions and the the intercommunication among components of the system. The insights gained from the new conceptual framework permitted subordination of departments to more functional units of decisionmaking, information processing, and communication networks. These processes were used to develop a project management system for the X-29A around the information flows that minimized the effects inherent in sampled-data systems and exploited the closed-loop multivariable nature of highly integrated projects
On the arcmin structure of the X-ray Universe
We present the angular correlation function of the X-ray population of 1063
XMM-Newton observations at high Galactic latitudes, comprising up to ~30000
sources over a sky area of ~125 sq. degrees in the energy bands: soft (0.5-2
keV) and hard (2-10 keV). This is the largest sample of serendipitous X-ray
sources ever used for clustering analysis purposes to date and the results have
been determined with unprecedented accuracy. We detect significant clustering
signals in the soft and hard bands (~10 sigma and ~5 sigma, respectively). We
deproject the angular correlation function via Limber's equation and calculate
the typical spatial lengths. We infer that AGN at redshifts ~1 are embedded in
dark matter halos with typical masses of log M ~ 12.6/h Msol and lifetimes in
the range ~3-5 x 10^8 years, which indicates that AGN activity is a transient

Even botanists, who have not given the subject special attention, will be surprised to find how small a number of weed seeds they are able to identify without study

Papers from private industry reporting applications of remote sensing to oil and gas exploration were presented. Digitally processed LANDSAT images were successfully employed in several geologic interpretations. A growing interest in digital image processing among the geologic user community was shown. The papers covered a wide geographic range and a wide technical and application range. Topics included: (1) oil and gas exploration, by use of radar and multisensor studies as well as by use of LANDSAT imagery or LANDSAT digital data, (2) mineral exploration, by mapping from LANDSAT and Skylab imagery and by LANDSAT digital processing, (3) geothermal energy studies with Skylab imagery, (4) environmental and engineering geology, by use of radar or LANDSAT and Skylab imagery, (5) regional mapping and interpretation, and digital and spectral methods
Effects of Heat on the Germination of Corn and Smut
Bunt and smut of oats are successfully combatted by treating the seed with hot water previous to planting. Since the discovery of this method by Jensen, a great many experiments have been made both in Europe and America. The success with bunt and oats smut naturally directed the attention of investigators to hot water treatment for corn smut, but experiments made by Pammel and others proved it to be ineffectual
The Stomata and Palisade Cells of Leaves
The name stomata (sing. stoma) has been applied to the elliptical apertures in the epidermis of leaves and other green parts of plants. The stoma is a modified epidermal cell and consists of a rift and guardian cells (usually two in number). The guardian cells are rightly named for it is their function to regulate the amount of evaporation from the leaf by opening and closing the rift. Unlike ordinary epidermal cells, the guardian cells contain chlorophyll, and for that reason they were once, thought to belong to the parenchyma
Accumulation is late and brief in preferential choice
Preferential choices are often explained using models within the evidence accumulation framework: value drives the drift rate at which evidence is accumulated until a threshold is reached and an option is chosen. Although rarely stated explicitly, almost all such models assume that decision makers have knowledge at the onset of the choice of all available attributes and options. In reality however, choice information is viewed piece-by-piece, and is often not completely acquired until late in the choice, if at all. Across four eye-tracking experiments, we show that whether the information was acquired early or late is irrelevant in predicting choice: all that matters is whether or not it was acquired at all. Models with potential alternative assumptions were posited and tested, such as 1) accumulation of instantaneously available information or 2) running estimates as information is acquired. These provided poor fits to the data. We are forced to conclude that participants either are clairvoyant, accumulating using information before they have looked at it, or delay accumulating evidence until very late in the choice, so late that the majority of choice time is not time in which evidence is accumulated. Thus, although the evidence accumulation framework may still be useful in measurement models, it cannot account for the details of the processes involved in decision making

The population of propellers in Saturn's A Ring
We present an extensive data set of ~150 localized features from Cassini
images of Saturn's Ring A, a third of which are demonstrated to be persistent
by their appearance in multiple images, and half of which are resolved well
enough to reveal a characteristic "propeller" shape. We interpret these
features as the signatures of small moonlets embedded within the ring, with
diameters between 40 and 500 meters. The lack of significant brightening at
high phase angle indicates that they are likely composed primarily of
macroscopic particles, rather than dust. With the exception of two features
found exterior to the Encke Gap, these objects are concentrated entirely within
three narrow (~1000 km) bands in the mid-A Ring that happen to be free from
local disturbances from strong density waves. However, other nearby regions are
similarly free of major disturbances but contain no propellers. It is unclear
whether these bands are due to specific events in which a parent body or bodies
broke up into the current moonlets, or whether a larger initial moonlet
population has been sculpted into bands by other ring processes.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures; Accepted at A
