    An Evaluation of the Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts of NSW DPI Investments in IPM Research in Invertebrate Rice Pests

    Research into IPM technologies has been conducted by NSW DPI for over 20 years. Evaluating the returns from investment in specific research and development projects is an important component of the NSW DPI science and research program. An economic evaluation has been conducted of IPM in managing invertebrate pests in rice in NSW. We found that there has been widespread adoption of many IPM practices amongst NSW rice growers leading to a flow of economic benefits to the rice industry and the community. Important environmental and human health benefits were also identified. A benefit-cost ratio of 9.05 was calculated for the return to NSW DPI investment in rice invertebrate pests IPM research. The net present value of the benefits of this research to 2020 was $67.9 million.     A globally ageing population is more frequently required to utilize information systems as caregiving agencies and government policies adapt newer technologies to sustain efficiency. This unique user group commonly has difficulty with the solutions presented to them, and recent studies have focused on establishing the causes of these difficulties and possible solutions to them. However, these approaches are spread over a variety of technology domains (e.g. Mobile, Web, Desktop) and there seems to be little alignment between them, despite some obvious overlaps. In this paper, we conducted a systematic literature review to provide a structured overview of the current state of the literature regarding user interface development for elderly users over a variety of domains.     Adaptive mass expulsion attitude control system

    An attitude control system and method operative with a thruster controls the attitude of a vehicle carrying the thruster, wherein the thruster has a valve enabling the formation of pulses of expelled gas from a source of compressed gas. Data of the attitude of the vehicle is gathered, wherein the vehicle is located within a force field tending to orient the vehicle in a first attitude different from a desired attitude. The attitude data is evaluated to determine a pattern of values of attitude of the vehicle in response to the gas pulses of the thruster and in response to the force field. The system and the method maintain the attitude within a predetermined band of values of attitude which includes the desired attitude. Computation circuitry establishes an optimal duration of each of the gas pulses based on the pattern of values of attitude, the optimal duration providing for a minimal number of opening and closure operations of the valve.     A Bivariate Hypothesis Testing Approach for Mapping the Trait-Influential Gene

    The linkage disequilibrium (LD) based quantitative trait loci (QTL) model involves two indispensable hypothesis tests: the test of whether or not a QTL exists, and the test of the LD strength between the QTaL and the observed marker. The advantage of this two-test framework is to test whether there is an influential QTL around the observed marker instead of just having a QTL by random chance. There exist unsolved, open statistical questions about the inaccurate asymptotic distributions of the test statistics. We propose a bivariate null kernel (BNK) hypothesis testing method, which characterizes the joint distribution of the two test statistics in two-dimensional space. The power of this BNK approach is verified by three different simulation designs and one whole genome dataset. It solves a few challenging open statistical questions, closely separates the confounding between ‘linkage’ and ‘QTL effect’, makes a fine genome division, provides a comprehensive understanding of the entire genome, overcomes limitations of traditional QTL approaches, and connects traditional QTL mapping with the newest genotyping technologies. The proposed approach contributes to both the genetics literature and the statistics literature, and has a potential to be extended to broader fields where a bivariate test is needed

    Robust model-based fault diganosis [sic] for a DC zonal electrical distribution system

    A key element of the U.S. Navy's transition to an electric naval force is an Integrated Power System (IPS) that provides continuity of service to vital systems despite combat damage. In order to meet subsequent survivability standards under a reduced manning constraint, the IPS system must include a fault tolerant control scheme, capable of achieving automated graceful degradation despite major disruptions involving cascading failures. Toward this objective, online modelbased residual generation techniques are proposed, which identify explicitly defined faults within a stochastic DC Zonal Electrical Distribution System (DC ZEDS). Two novel polynomial approaches to the design of unknown input observers (UIO) are developed to estimate the partial state and, under certain conditions, the unknown input. These methods are shown to apply to a larger class of systems compared to standard projection based approaches where the UIO rank condition is not satisfied. It is shown that the partial-state estimate is sufficient to the computation of residuals for fault diagnosis, even in such cases where full-state estimation is not possible. In order to reduce the complexity of the system, a modular approach to Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) is presented. Here, the innovations generated from a bank of Kalman filters (some of them UIOs) act as a structured residual set for the stochastic DC ZEDS subsystem modules and are shown to detect and isolate various classes of faults. Certain mathematical models are also shown to effectively identify input/output consistency of systems in explicitly defined fault conditions. In a finite space, the twins can both be on inertial, periodic orbits so that they have the opportunity to compare their ages when their paths cross. As we show, they will agree on their respective ages and avoid the paradox.
