    Correlation between the activation enthalpy and Kohlrausch exponent for ionic conductivity in oxide glasses

    We have established for alkali ions in oxide glasses a strong correlation between the fractional (Kohlrausch) exponent β in the conductivity relaxation function, exp[-(t/τ*)β], and the activation energy E*a of τ* and σ when varying the composition of oxide glass formers and the alkali ions while holding the alkali-ion concentration constant. An even stronger correlation of the trends in β and the product βE*a is found. These correlations were expected conceptually by the coupling model for conductivity relaxation, and the latter was the motivation behind the present undertaking of the establishment of the correlation from experimental data. The glass-forming oxides considered include P2O5, SiO2, B2O3, Al2O3-B2O3, GeO2, and Al2O3-GeO2. In all, some 89 different compositions were examined and the alkali oxides considered include Li2O, Na2O, K2O, Rb2O, and some of their binary mixtures. The correlation will have a bearing on the viability of theoretical models of conductivity relaxation

    High Temporal Resolution XMM Monitoring of PKS 2155-304

    The bright, strongly variable BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 was observed by XMM for two essentially uninterrupted periods of ~11 and 16 hr on 30-31 May 2000. The strongest variations occurred in the highest energy bands. After scaling for this effect, the three softest bands (0.1-1.7 keV) showed strong correlation with no measurable lag to reliable limits of \tau \ls 0.3 hr. However, the hardest band (~3 keV) was less well-correlated with the other three, especially on short time scales, showing deviations of ~10-20% in ~1 hr although, again, no significant interband lag was detected. This result and examination of previous ASCA and BeppoSAX cross-correlation functions suggest that previous claims of soft lags on time scales of 0.3-4 hr could well be an artifact of periodic interruptions due to Earth-occultation every 1.6 hr. Previous determinations of the magnetic field/bulk Lorentz factor were therefore premature, as these data provide only a lower limit of B \gamma^{1/3} \gs 2.5 G. The hardest band encompasses the spectral region above the high-energy break; its enhanced variability could be indicating that the break energy of the synchrotron spectrum, and therefore of the underlying electron energy distribution, changes independently of the lower energies.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Ap

    Detecting nutrient deficiency in plant systems using synchrotron Fourier-transform infrared microspectroscopy

    By 2050, it is estimated that the global population will have surpassed 9 billion people, presenting a significant challenge with regards to food security. In order to provide sufficient quantities of nutritious food in the future, it is necessary to improve agricultural productivity by up to 70%. Nutrient deficiencies are one particular threat to food security that can have a negative impact on crop yield and quality. Currently the standard agricultural approach to prevention is to supply an excess macronutrient fertiliser, such as nitrate or phosphate, during crop production. However, the efficiency of this approach is poor as deficiencies of specific nutrients, such as Ca, are not prevented in this circumstance, and fertiliser use is associated with a host of adverse environmental impacts. Herein, we describe a novel method to detect Ca deficiency using synchrotron radiation-based Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy in live and fixed tissue of the model plant Commelina communis, as a precursor to targeted nutrient remediation in the field

    SLoMo: automated site localization of modifications from ETD/ECD mass spectra

    Recently, software has become available to automate localization of phosphorylation sites from CID data and to assign associated confidence scores. We present an algorithm, SLoMo (Site Localization of Modifications), which extends this capability to ETD/ECD mass spectra. Furthermore, SLoMo caters for both high and low resolution data and allows for site-localization of any UniMod post-translational modification. SLoMo accepts input data from a variety of formats (e.g., Sequest, OMSSA). We validate SLoMo with high and low resolution ETD, ECD, and CID data

    Identifying genes that are differentially expressed by Mycobacterium bovis BCG after phagocytosis by macrophages will facilitate the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of host cell-intracellular pathogen interactions. To identify such genes a cDNA-total RNA subtractive hybridization strategy has been used that circumvents the problems both of limited availability of bacterial RNA from models of infection and the high rRNA backgrounds in total bacterial RNA. The subtraction products were used to screen a high-density gridded Mycobacterium tuberculosis genomic library. Sequence data were obtained from 19 differential clones, five of which contained overlapping sequences for the gene encoding mycocerosic acid synthase (mas). Mas is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of multi-methylated long-chain fatty acids that are part of phthiocerol dimycocerosate, a major component of the complex mycobacterial cell wall. Northern blotting and primer extension data confirmed up-regulation of mas in intracellular mycobacteria and also revealed a putative extended -10 promoter structure and a long untranslated upstream region 5' of the mas transcripts, containing predicted double-stranded structures. Furthermore, clones containing overlapping sequences for furB, groEL-2, rplE and fadD28 were identified and the up-regulation of these genes was confirmed by Northern blot analysis. The cDNA-RNA subtractive hybridization enrichment and high density gridded library screening, combined with selective extraction of bacterial mRNA represents a valuable approach to the identification of genes expressed during intra-macrophage residence for bacteria such as M. bovis BCG and the pathogenic mycobacterium, M. tuberculosis

    Looming struggles over technology for border control

    New technologies under development, capable of inflicting pain on masses of people, could be used for border control against asylum seekers. Implementation might be rationalized by the threat of mass migration due to climate change, nuclear disaster or exaggerated fears of refugees created by governments. We focus on taser anti-personnel mines, suggesting both technological countermeasures and ways of making the use of such technology politically counterproductive. We also outline several other types of ‘non-lethal’ technology that could be used for border control and raise human rights concerns: high-powered microwaves, armed robots, wireless tasers, acoustic devices/vortex rings, ionizing and pulsed energy lasers, chemical calmatives, convulsants, bioregulators and malodurants. Whether all these possible border technologies will be implemented is a matter for speculation, but their serious human rights implications warrant advance scrutiny

    Sulfite Residues in Maraschino Cherries

    A survey of 53 samples of maraschino cherries from 14 different processors revealed that total sulfite residues averaged 52.3 ± 44.7 ppm. However, 58.5% of the samples had less than 40 ppm total SO2, while only 7.6% had greater than 120 ppm total SO2 indicating that the distribution was skewed in the direction of lower residue levels. Free sulfite residues in the 53 samples were considerably lower, averaging 14.2 ± 7.1 ppm. With free SO2 levels, 35.8% of the samples had less than 10 ppm free SO2, while only 5.7% had greater than 30 ppm free SO2. With an average serving size of one cherry (3–7 g), maraschino cherries would contribute only 0.16–0.37 mg per serving of total sulfites as SO2
