    Do the Rich Save More?

    The issue of whether higher lifetime income households save a larger fraction of their income is an important factor in the evaluation of tax and macroeconomic policy. Despite an outpouring of research on this topic in the 1950s and 1960s, the question remains unresolved and has since received little attention. This paper revisits the issue, using new empirical methods and the Panel Study on Income Dynamics, the Survey of Consumer Finances, and the Consumer Expenditure Survey. We first consider the various ways in which life cycle models can be altered to generate differences in saving rates by income groups: differences in Social Security benefits, different time preference rates, non-homothetic preferences, bequest motives, uncertainty, and consumption floors. Using a variety of instruments for lifetime income, we find a strong positive relationship between personal saving rates and lifetime income. The data do not support theories relying on time preference rates, non-homothetic preferences, or variations in Social Security benefits. Instead, the evidence is consistent with models in which precautionary saving and bequest motives drive variations in saving rates across income groups. Finally, we illustrate how models that assume a constant rate of saving across income groups can yield erroneous predictions.

    Biexponential I = 3/2 Spin–Lattice Relaxation in the Solid State: Multiple-Quantum 7 Li NMR as a Probe of Fast Ion Dynamics

    Spin–lattice relaxation measurements are used in 7Li NMR studies of materials of potential use in solid-state Li-ion batteries as a probe of ion mobility on a fast (nanosecond to picosecond) time scale. The relaxation behavior is often analyzed by assuming exponential behavior or, equivalently, a single T 1 time constant. However, the spin–lattice relaxation of spin I = 3/2 nuclei, such as 7Li, is in general biexponential; this is a fundamental property of I = 3/2 nuclei and unrelated to any compartmentalization within the solid. Although the possibility of biexponential 7Li (and other I = 3/2 nuclei) spin–lattice relaxation in the solid state has been noted by a number of authors, it can be difficult to observe unambiguously using conventional experimental NMR techniques, such as inversion or saturation recovery. In this work, we show that triple-quantum-filtered NMR experiments, as previously exploited in I = 3/2 NMR of liquids, can be used in favorable circumstances to observe and readily quantify biexponential 7Li spin–lattice relaxation in solids with high ion mobility. We demonstrate a triple-quantum-filtered inversion-recovery experiment on the candidate solid electrolyte material Li2OHCl at 325 K, which has previously been shown to exhibit fast ion mobility, and we also introduce a novel triple-quantum-filtered saturation-recovery experiment. The results of these solid-state NMR experiments are less straightforward than those in liquids as a consequence of the unwanted direct excitation of triple-quantum coherences by the weak (compared with the unaveraged 7Li quadrupolar interaction) pulses used, but we show that this unwanted excitation can be accounted for and, in the example shown here, does not impede the extraction of the two 7Li spin–lattice relaxation times

    Evolution of size-dependent flowering in a variable environment: construction and analysis of a stochastic integral projection model

    Understanding why individuals delay reproduction is a classic problem in evolutionary biology. In plants, the study of reproductive delays is complicated because growth and survival can be size and age dependent, individuals of the same size can grow by different amounts and there is temporal variation in the environment. We extend the recently developed integral projection approach to include size- and age-dependent demography and temporal variation. The technique is then applied to a long-term individually structured dataset for Carlina vulgaris, a monocarpic thistle. The parameterized model has excellent descriptive properties in terms of both the population size and the distributions of sizes within each age class. In Carlina, the probability of flowering depends on both plant size and age. We use the parameterized model to predict this relationship, using the evolutionarily stable strategy approach. Considering each year separately, we show that both the direction and the magnitude of selection on the flowering strategy vary from year to year. Provided the flowering strategy is constrained, so it cannot be a step function, the model accurately predicts the average size at flowering. Elasticity analysis is used to partition the size- and age-specific contributions to the stochastic growth rate, λs. We use λs to construct fitness landscapes and show how different forms of stochasticity influence its topography. We prove the existence of a unique stochastic growth rate, λs, which is independent of the initial population vector, and show that Tuljapurkar's perturbation analysis for log(λs) can be used to calculate elasticities

We resolve this long‐standing question using new empirical methods applied to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the Survey of Consumer Finances, and the Consumer Expenditure Survey. We find a strong positive relationship between saving rates and lifetime income and a weaker but still positive relationship between the marginal propensity to save and lifetime income. There is little support for theories that seek to explain these positive correlations by relying solely on time preference rates, nonhomothetic preferences, or variations in Social Security benefits. There is more support for models emphasizing uncertainty with respect to income and health expenses, bequest motives, and asset‐based means testing or behavioral factors causing minimal saving rates among low‐income households

    Acute and chronic effects of multivitamin/mineral supplementation on objective and subjective energy measures

    Background: Vitamins and minerals play an essential role within many cellular processes including energy production and metabolism. Previously, supplementation with a multivitamin/mineral (MVM) for ≄28 days resulted in improvements to cognition and subjective state. We have also demonstrated shifts in metabolism during cognitively demanding tasks following MVM in females, both acutely and following 8-week supplementation. The current study aimed to assess these effects further in males and females using metabolically challenging exercise and cognitive tasks. Methods: The current randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel groups study investigated the effects of a MVM complex in 82 healthy young (18-35y) exercisers. Subjective ratings and substrate metabolism were assessed during 30 min each of increasingly effortful incremental exercise and demanding cognitive tasks. Assessments took place on acute study days following a single dose (Day 1) of MVM, containing 3 times recommended daily allowance of water-soluble vitamins plus CoQ10, and following 4-week supplementation (Day 28). Results: Energy expenditure (EE) was increased during cognitive tasks following MVM across Day 1 and Day 28, with greater effects in males. In males, MVM also increased carbohydrate oxidation and energy expenditure during exercise across Day 1 and Day 28. In females, mental tiredness was lower during exercise; increases in physical tiredness following 30 min of exercise were attenuated; and stress ratings following cognitive tasks were reduced following MVM. In males, MVM only lowered mental tiredness following 10 min of exercise. These effects were apparent irrespective of day, but effects on mental tiredness were greater on Day 28. Ferritin levels were also higher on Day 28 in those receiving MVM. Conclusion: These findings extend on existing knowledge, demonstrating increased carbohydrate oxidation and increased energy expenditure in males following MVM supplementation for the first time. Importantly, they show modulation of energy expenditure and subjective tiredness following a single dose, providing further evidence for acute effects of MVM. Differential effects in men and women suggest that sex may play an important role in the effects of MVM on energy metabolism and should be considered in future research.
