    Chemical control of Cytospora leucostoma, a major limiting factor of peach production in western Colorado

    2017 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.Cytospora canker, Cytospora leucostoma, is a major limiting factor of peach production in Colorado, accounting for 15-20% of crop production loss annually. Given the unique environmental factors of the western slope region of Colorado, C. leucostoma has developed into a severe fungal disease, reducing yields annually. Chemical measures are important for Cytospora control as few options currently exist for preventing new infections. The specific objectives of the following thesis are to: (1) evaluate the efficacy of conventional and organic fungicides for C. leucostoma control, (2) test wound sealing fungicides, embedded in paint or kaolin clay, to develop preventive and containment approaches in existing orchards. Topsin, Topsin amended in 50% latex, Captan, Captan amended in 50% latex, 50% latex, lime sulfur, and lime sulfur amended in kaolin clay (Surround WP) showed evidence of efficacy from laboratory and field trials. Of these treatments, 50% latex, Topsin amended in 50% latex, and Captan amended in 50% latex, were shown to limit pathogen growth most effectively on pruning wounds during field trials in the summer season. In all field trials, however, NuCop showed absolutely no efficacy and should be avoided for C. leucostoma control in western Colorado. When various chemicals were tested on existing cankers to reduce spore inoculum loads, efficacy could not be statistically confirmed. The results of this study were compicated by variable field conditions and a large range of spore produced by each canker. Thus, larger sample sizes should be used in future studies to tease a part chemical efficacy and abiotic influences. Further, kaolin clay alone may shield fungal cankers from extreme temperatures, enhancing its growth in the field

    Can people apply 'FAST' when it really matters? A qualitative study guided by the common sense self-regulation model

    Early identification of stroke symptoms and rapid access to the emergency services increases an individual's chance of receiving thrombolytic therapy and reduces the likelihood of infirmity. The UK's national stroke campaign 'Act FAST' was developed to increase public awareness of stroke symptoms and highlighted the importance of rapid response by contacting emergency services. No study to date has assessed if and how people who experienced or witnessed stroke in line with the campaigns' symptoms of the FAST acronym (i.e., facial weakness, arm weakness, slurred speech, and time) may use this FAST in their response. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 13 stroke patients and witnesses were conducted. Interviews were theory-guided based on the Common Sense Self-Regulation Model, to understand the appraisal process of the onset of stroke symptoms and how this impacted on participants' ability to apply their knowledge of the FAST campaign. RESULTS: The majority of patients (n = 8/13) failed to correctly identify stroke and reported no impact of the campaign on their stroke recognition and response. Inability to identify stroke, perceiving symptoms to lack severity and lack of control contributed to a delay in seeking medical attention. CONCLUSION: Stroke witnesses and patients predominantly fail to identify stroke which suggest a lack of FAST application when it matters. Inaccurate risk perceptions and lack of physical control both play central roles in influencing the formation of illness representation not associated with an appropriate emergency response

    The Neutralino Sector of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

    The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) includes a Higgs iso-singlet superfield in addition to the two Higgs doublet superfields of the minimal extension. If the Higgs fields remain weakly coupled up to the GUT scale, as naturally motivated by the concept of supersymmetry, the mixing between singlet and doublet fields is small and can be treated perturbatively. The mass spectrum and mixing matrix of the neutralino sector can be analyzed analytically and the structure of this 5-state system is under good theoretical control. We also determine decay modes and production channels in sfermion cascade decays to these particles at the LHC and pair production in e+e- colliders.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure

    Sticky central limit theorems on open books

    Given a probability distribution on an open book (a metric space obtained by gluing a disjoint union of copies of a half-space along their boundary hyperplanes), we define a precise concept of when the Fr\'{e}chet mean (barycenter) is sticky. This nonclassical phenomenon is quantified by a law of large numbers (LLN) stating that the empirical mean eventually almost surely lies on the (codimension 11 and hence measure 00) spine that is the glued hyperplane, and a central limit theorem (CLT) stating that the limiting distribution is Gaussian and supported on the spine.     Face recognition based on the proximity measure clustering

    In this paper problems of featureless face recognition are considered. The recognition is based on clustering the proximity measures between the distributions of brightness clusters cardinality for segmented images. As a proximity measure three types of distances are used in this work: the Euclidean, cosine and Kullback-Leibler distances. Image segmentation and proximity measure clustering are carried out by means of a software model of the recurrent neural network.
