    Tourism policy and destination marketing in developing countries: the chain of influence

    Tourism marketers including destination marketing organisations (DMOs) and international tour operators play a pivotal role in destination marketing, especially in creating destination images. These images, apparent in tourist brochures, are designed to influence tourist decision-making and behaviour. This paper proposes the concept of a “chain of influence” in destination marketing and image-making, suggesting that the content of marketing materials is influenced by the priorities of those who design these materials, e.g. tour operators and DMOs. A content analysis of 2,000 pictures from DMO and tour operator brochures revealed synergies and divergence between these marketers. The brochure content was then compared to the South African tourism policy, concluding that the dominant factor in the chain of influence in the South African context is in fact its organic image

    Abstract de la ponencia[EN] The requirements of evidence-based policymaking promote interest to realtime monitoring of public’s opinions on policy-relevant topics, and social media data mining allows diversification of information portfolio used by public administrators. This study discusses issues in public opinion mining with respect to extraction and analysis of information posted on Twitter about Sochi-2014 Olympic. It focuses on topics discussed on Twitter and sentiment analysis of tweets about the Games. Final database contained 613,333 tweets covering time span from November 1, 2013 until March 31, 2014. Using hash tags the data were classified into the following categories: Anticipation of the Games (9%), Cheering of the teams (31%), News (6%), Events (11%), Sports (18%), and Problems & Politics (15%). Research reveals considerable differences in the outcomes of machine sentiment classifiers: Deeply Moving, Pattern, and SentiStrength. SentiStrength produced the most suitable results in terms of minimization of incorrectly classified tweets.     Projected Images of Major Chinese Outbound Destinations

    This study aimed to explore the projected images of major outbound destinations based on popular travel magazines in China. Travel articles on Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan from 2006 to 2008 were content analyzed. Japan was reported on most, and the projected images of the six destinations are dominated by leisure and recreation, and culture, history and art. Correspondence analysis was used to examine relationships between destinations and popular image attributes. The results showed that South Korea and Macau had distinct projected images, whereas Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam shared many similar image attributes. Practical implications for destination marketing organizations are provided

    DNA polymerases ζ and Rev1 mediate error-prone bypass of non-B DNA structures

    DNA polymerase ζ (Pol ζ) and Rev1 are key players in translesion DNA synthesis. The error-prone Pol ζ can also participate in replication of undamaged DNA when the normal replisome is impaired. Here we define the nature of the replication disturbances that trigger the recruitment of error-prone polymerases in the absence of DNA damage and describe the specific roles of Rev1 and Pol ζ in handling these disturbances. We show that Pol ζ/Rev1-dependent mutations occur at sites of replication stalling at short repeated sequences capable of forming hairpin structures. The Rev1 deoxycytidyl transferase can take over the stalled replicative polymerase and incorporate an additional ‘C’ at the hairpin base. Full hairpin bypass often involves template-switching DNA synthesis, subsequent realignment generating multiply mismatched primer termini and extension of these termini by Pol ζ. The postreplicative pathway dependent on polyubiquitylation of proliferating cell nuclear antigen provides a backup mechanism for accurate bypass of these sequences that is primarily used when the Pol ζ/Rev1-dependent pathway is inactive. The results emphasize the pivotal role of noncanonical DNA structures in mutagenesis and reveal the long-sought-after mechanism of complex mutations that represent a unique signature of Pol ζ
