Cape Wind: Public values and perceptions Application of contingent valuation method

    Get PDF
The Cape Wind proposal to build 130 turbines in Nantucket sound has been a central figure in development of renewable energy in New England. The aim of this study was two fold. First, the contingent valuation method was used to estimate an economic value the public has on policy for the preservation of Nantucket sound, within the scopes of the project. The second goal was to identify lessons that could be learned from the Cape Wind proposal and applied to future renewable energy projects in New England. Results revealed that the public has a positive economic value for a policy that would allow the resources of Nantucket Sound to be used as a wind park. Lessons that can be applied to future renewable energy developments include increasing public involvement in the early stages of planning and increasing public education on renewable energy

Since its beginnings in the 1970s feminist linguistics has developed into an interdisciplinary field of research on gender and language. Different methods and approaches have stimulated this field of study and have produced productive tensions and discussions. Therefore it is extremely important to continually question and to make explicit the categories of analysis and the linguistic theories used in the different approaches. Since the 1990s feminist theory has been especially stimulated by queer theory and has developed a new approach to the study of gender. The deconstruction of the Sex/Gender model raises important questions, which most feminist linguists still have to face. Both, feminist research on gender-specific ways of speaking and on sexist language take the category of gender as something that exists prior to language. Researchers of both groups have to rethink their concepts of the relationship between language and gender so that they do not inadvertently reinforce gender polarization and the myths of essential female-male difference. While feminist language reform has proved successful in initiating a remarkable language change during a comparably short period of time, there remains the problem that many of the advised strategies at least in German-speaking countries, which aim at gender-specific linguistic representation in language, strengthen the idea of a binary dichotomy. The new feminist theory presents a challenge to feminist linguistics: rethinking the category gender in their own research. This could lead to challenging new questions

    Sanford Berman

Since the publication (in 1971) of his book "Prejudices and antipathies", a tract about biased terms in the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Sanford „Sandy“ Berman (b. 1933) has been known as an outspoken and ceaseless critic of mainstream American librarianship. This thesis aims to provide an overview of Berman's work as an activist librarian, including (but not limited to) his struggle for more user-friendly catalogs, his social activism, his advocacy for „alternative“ materials in libraries, and his campaigning against censorship and the commercialization of libraries. The thesis' central chapter is devoted to Berman's continuing critique of LCSH terminology

When a good is a bad (or a bad is a good) - analysis of data from an ambiguous nonmarket valuation setting

This paper analyses data from a contingent valuation experiment carried out in a context with large degree of preference heterogeneity and valuation ambiguity. Despite this challenge, by implementing estimation of an unrestricted valuation function on pooled data from two elicitation formats, utilizing all preference information available from the survey, we are able to estimate welfare measures with an acceptable degree of statistical confidence. It turns out that an offshore wind farm, a priori believed to constitute a bad that people would be willing to pay to avoid, instead was a good that people would be willing to forego under compensation. This was true on average but not for all study participants. Two key determinants of preferences were spatial proximity to the proposed wind farm and perceptions of the visual impacts of wind turbines. Individuals who would be near and thought wind turbines are “ugly” had a mean willingness to pay to avoid the wind farm of about 508perhouseholdperyear.Incontrast,thosewhowouldbefarawayandperceivedwindturbinestobebeautifulhadanegativemeanwillingnesstopaytoavoidthewindfarmofabout508 per household per year. In contrast, those who would be far away and perceived wind turbines to be “beautiful” had a negative mean willingness to pay to avoid the wind farm of about −595 per household per year.publishedVersio
