Site Percolation and Phase Transitions in Two Dimensions
The properties of the pure-site clusters of spin models, i.e. the clusters
which are obtained by joining nearest-neighbour spins of the same sign, are
here investigated. In the Ising model in two dimensions it is known that such
clusters undergo a percolation transition exactly at the critical point. We
show that this result is valid for a wide class of bidimensional systems
undergoing a continuous magnetization transition. We provide numerical evidence
for discrete as well as for continuous spin models, including SU(N) lattice
gauge theories. The critical percolation exponents do not coincide with the
ones of the thermal transition, but they are the same for models belonging to
the same universality class.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Numerical part developed; figures,

Scaling in DNA unzipping models: denaturated loops and end-segments as branches of a block copolymer network
For a model of DNA denaturation, exponents describing the distributions of
denaturated loops and unzipped end-segments are determined by exact enumeration
and by Monte Carlo simulations in two and three dimensions. The loop
distributions are consistent with first order thermal denaturation in both
cases. Results for end-segments show a coexistence of two distinct power laws
in the relative distributions, which is not foreseen by a recent approach in
which DNA is treated as a homogeneous network of linear polymer segments. This
unexpected feature, and the discrepancies with such an approach, are explained
in terms of a refined scaling picture in which a precise distinction is made
between network branches representing single stranded and effective double
stranded segments.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Topical prophylaxis of conjunctivitis induced by high-dose cytosine arabinoside
We investigated the efficacy of dexamethasone plus diclofenac eye drops as prophylaxis for conjunctivitis induced by high-dose (HD) cytarabine (Ara-C). Sixty patients were randomized to receive either dexamethasone (group A, n=29) or dexamethasone plus diclofenac (group B, n=31). Conjunctivitis was experienced by 13/29 (45%) patients in group A, and 4/31 (13%) patients in group B (p 640.009). Twelve out of 13 patients in group A who developed ocular toxicity had grade 2-3 conjunctivitis whereas only one of four patients affected in group B experienced a similar grade of conjunctivitis. The incidence and severity of HD Ara-C-induced conjunctivitis are significantly reduced by combined dexamethasone/diclofenac prophylaxis
A first glance on the epigenome of Capra hircus
DNA methylation and microRNAs (miRNA) are two important forms of epigenetic modifications that play an important role in gene regulation in animals. Methylation at the carbon 5 position of cytosine residues is a fundamental layer of cellular differentiation through the control of transcriptional potential. MiRNA are small noncoding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression. Complete DNA methylomes for several organisms are now available; at the present, methylome of the domestic goat is unexplored. There is also still limited knowledge about miRNAs expression profiles in small ruminant species. Therefore, to contribute information on epigenetic modification in Capra hircus, we analysed the methylome and the miRNA population of three tissues (hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary) from 3 adult Saanen goats. We used Methylated DNA binding domain sequencing with enrichment of methylated DNA fragments and next generation sequencing. We produced least 23 million reads per sample, which were aligned to the goat reference genome. Further analyses were performed to identify peaks corresponding to hyper-methylated regions. We sequenced miRNAs expressed in the three tissues with Illumina high-throughput sequencing. Reads were mapped on the Capra hircus reference genome and both known and novel miRNAs, and miRNA target sites were identified using information collected in miRBase and using specific bioinformatic tools. This study produced a comprehensive miRNA profile related to the biology of goat. Furthermore, this is the first work dealing with methylome in Capra hircus: our preliminary results could provide new information for a deeper comprehension of epigenetic mechanisms of this species

Influence of Dynamic Ozone Dry Deposition on Ozone Pollution
Identifying the contributions of chemistry and transport to observed ozone pollution using regional-to-global models relies on accurate representation of ozone dry deposition. We use a recently developed configuration of the NOAA GFDL chemistry-climate model - in which the atmosphere and land are coupled through dry deposition-to investigate the influence of ozone dry deposition on ozone pollution over northern midlatitudes. In our model, deposition pathways are tied to dynamic terrestrial processes, such as photosynthesis and water cycling through the canopy and soil. Small increases in winter deposition due to more process-based representation of snow and deposition to surfaces reduce hemispheric-scale ozone throughout the lower troposphere by 5-12 ppb, improving agreement with observations relative to a simulation with the standard configuration for ozone dry deposition. Declining snow cover by the end of the 21st-century tempers the previously identified influence of rising methane on winter ozone. Dynamic dry deposition changes summer surface ozone by -4 to +7 ppb. While previous studies emphasize the importance of uptake by plant stomata, new diagnostic tracking of depositional pathways reveals a widespread impact of nonstomatal deposition on ozone pollution. Daily variability in both stomatal and nonstomatal deposition contribute to daily variability in ozone pollution. Twenty-first century changes in summer deposition result from a balance among changes in individual pathways, reflecting differing responses to both high carbon dioxide (through plant physiology versus biomass accumulation) and water availability. Our findings highlight a need for constraints on the processes driving ozone dry deposition to test representation in regional-to-global models.Peer reviewe
Orbital resonances in discs around braneworld Kerr black holes
Rotating black holes in the brany universe of the Randall-Sundrum type are
described by the Kerr geometry with a tidal charge b representing the
interaction of the brany black hole and the bulk spacetime. For b<0 rotating
black holes with dimensionless spin a>1 are allowed. We investigate the role of
the tidal charge b in the orbital resonance model of QPOs in black hole
systems. The orbital Keplerian, the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies
of the equatorial, quasicircular geodetical motion are given and their radial
profiles are discussed. The resonant conditions are given in three
astrophysically relevant situations: for direct (parametric) resonances, for
the relativistic precession model, and for some trapped oscillations of the
warped discs, with resonant combinational frequencies. It is shown, how b could
influence matching of the observational data indicating the 3:2 frequency ratio
observed in GRS 1915+105 microquasar with prediction of the orbital resonance
model; limits on allowed range of the black hole parameters a and b are
established. The "magic" dimensionless black hole spin enabling presence of
strong resonant phenomena at the radius where \nu_K:\nu_{\theta}:\nu_r=3:2:1 is
determined in dependence on b. Such strong resonances could be relevant even in
sources with highly scattered resonant frequencies, as those expected in Sgr
A*. The specific values of a and b are given also for existence of specific
radius where \nu_K:\nu_{\theta}:\nu_r=s:t:u with 5>=s>t>u being small natural
numbers. It is shown that for some ratios such situation is impossible in the
field of black holes. We can conclude that analysing the microquasars
high-frequency QPOs in the framework of orbital resonance models, we can put
relevant limits on the tidal charge of brany Kerr black holes.Comment: 31 pages, 19 figures, to appear in General Relativity and Gravitatio
Nuclear Physics meets Medicine and Biology: Boron Neutron Capture Therapy
BNCT is a tumour treatment based on thermal-neutron irradiation of tissues enriched with 10B, which according to the 10B(n, )7Li reaction produces particles with high Linear Energy Transfer and short range. Since this treatment can deliver a therapeutic tumour dose sparing normal tissues, BNCT represents an alternative for diffuse tumours and metastases, which show poor response to surgery and photontherapy. In 2001 and 2003, in Pavia BNCT was applied to an isolated liver, which was infused with boron, explanted, irradiated and re-implanted. A new project was then initiated for lung tumours, developing a protocol for Boron concentration measurements and performing organ-dose Monte Carlo calculations; in parallel, radiobiology studies are ongoing to characterize the BNCT effects down to cellular level. After a brief introduction, herein we will present the main activities ongoing in Pavia including the radiobiological ones, which are under investigation not only experimentally but also theoretically, basing on a Monte Carlo code recently extended to simulate cell killing
Dendritic cell viability is decreased after phagocytosis of apoptotic tumor cells induced by staurosporine or vaccinia virus infection
Background and Objectives. Dendritic cells (DC) primed with tumor antigens can effectively mediate the regression of a variety of established solid malignancies in both murine and human models. Several experimental studies indicate that apoptotic bodies are an optimal source of tumor antigens for ex vivo priming of DC. However, the clinical use of killed tumor cells as a source of antigens will require an optimal methodology to induce effective tumor cell apoptosis. Design and Methods. The goal of this study was to compare the efficiency of three agents for inducing neoplastic B lymphocyte apoptosis; staurosporine, infection by modified vaccinia (MVA) viral particles and ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation. Results. The three methods were finely tuned to induce apoptosis in more than 90% of tumor cells after 24 hours of exposure. However, the viability of monocyte-derived DC, loaded with B-cell tumor apoptotic bodies induced by staurosporine or MVA viral particles, decreased dramatically within 48 hours after phagocytosis of the killed neoplastic cells. The persistence of the apoptosis-inducing agents in the apoptotic bodies and not in the tumor supernatant, was responsible for the observed damage to DC viability. In contrast, DC viability was not affected after uptake of tumor cells killed through UVC-irradiation. Furthermore, B-lymphoblastic cell line (LCL)-specific T cells were reactivated by DC loaded with apoptotic bodies induced by UVC-rays. Interpretation and Conclusions. Since the method used to induce tumor cell apoptosis might be detrimental to DC viability, these findings should be considered when designing anticancer vaccination programs
