Abstract High year-to-year variability in the incidence of Fusarium spp. and mycotoxin contamination was observed in a two-year survey investigating the impact of maize ear rot in 84 field samples from Germany. Fusarium verticillioides, F. graminearum, and F. proliferatum were the predominant species infecting maize kernels in 2006, whereas in 2007 the most frequently isolated species were F. graminearum, F. cerealis and F. subglutinans. Fourteen Fusariumrelated mycotoxins were detected as contaminants of maize kernels analyzed by a multi-mycotoxin determination method. In 2006, a growth season characterized by high temperature and low rainfall during anthesis and early grain filling, 75% of the maize samples were contaminated with deoxynivalenol, 34% with fumonisins and 27% with zearalenone. In 2007, characterized by moderate temperatures and frequent rainfall during the entire growth season, none of the 40 maize samples had quantifiable levels of fumonisins while deoxynivalenol and zearalenone were detected in 90% and 93% of the fields, respectively. In addition, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol, 15-acetyldeoxnivalenol, moniliformin, beauvericin, nivalenol and enniatin B were detected as common contaminants produced in both growing seasons. The results demonstrate a significant mycotoxin contamination associated with maize ear rots in Germany and indicate, with regard to anticipated climate change, that fumonisins-producing species already present in German maize production may become more important. Energy-dependent evolution in IC10 X-1: hard evidence for an extended corona and implications

We have analyzed a ~130 ks XMM-Newton observation of the dynamically confirmed black hole + Wolf-Rayet (BH+WR) X-ray binary (XB) IC10 X-1, covering ~1 orbital cycle. This system experiences periodic intensity dips every ~35 hr. We find that energy-independent evolution is rejected at a >5σ level. The spectral and timing evolution of IC10 X-1 are best explained by a compact disk blackbody and an extended Comptonized component, where the thermal component is completely absorbed and the Comptonized component is partially covered during the dip. We consider three possibilities for the absorber: cold material in the outer accretion disk, as is well documented for Galactic neutron star (NS) XBs at high inclination; a stream of stellar wind that is enhanced by traveling through the L1 point; and a spherical wind. We estimated the corona radius (r ADC) for IC10 X-1 from the dip ingress to be ~106 km, assuming absorption from the outer disk, and found it to be consistent with the relation between r ADC and 1-30 keV luminosity observed in Galactic NS XBs that spans two orders of magnitude. For the other two scenarios, the corona would be larger. Prior BH mass (M BH) estimates range over 23-38 M ☉, depending on the inclination and WR mass. For disk absorption, the inclination, i, is likely to be ~60-80°, with M BH ~ 24-41 M ☉. Alternatively, the L1-enhanced wind requires i ~ 80°, suggesting ~24-33 M ☉. For a spherical absorber, i ~ 40°, and M BH ~ 50-65 M ☉

Effect of environmental conditions on plant growth regulator activity of fungicidal seed treatments of barley

The triazole fungicide triadimenol is known to have plant growth regulator (PGR) activity in cereals when applied as a seed dressing. The effect of environmental conditions on PGR activity of triadimenol, other triazoles (flutriafol, prothioconazole, tebuconazole), the benzimidazole fuberidazole, imidazoles (imazalil, prochloraz), and the strobilurin fluoxastrobin on barley (Hordeum vulgare) was investigated using commercial seed dressings also including pyrimethanil (anilinopyrimidine) and triazoxide (benzotriazine), under controlled conditions. Irrespective of temperature or soil water content (SWC) triazole-containing seed treatments had a significant effect on the time and rate of plant emergence. Both triadimenolcontaining products significantly reduced the length of subcrown internodes and resulted in reduced shoot length three weeks after sowing. Growth suppression was stronger under optimal environmental conditions (17 to 19°C, 60 % SWC). Under suboptimal conditions – 9 to 10°C and 40 % SWC, respectively – no differences in shoot length were detected five weeks after sowing, whereas under optimal conditions plant growth retardation was still significant. The flutriafol-containing product partly inhibited shoot elongation, but never affected dry mass accumulation and root growth. The strobilurin-containing seed dressing had no marked plant growth activities on seedling emergence, shoot length and subcrown internode, but slightly stimulated root growth under all environmental conditions. The results indicate varying PGR activities of triazole seed dressings in response to mixing partner and growth conditions and suggest an increased stress tolerance of seedlings treated with triadimenol, enabling barley to better cope with suboptimal environmental conditions

Local stress anomaly in the Bavarian Molasse Basin

Background: The characterization of fault zones in the Bavarian Molasse Basin plays a major role for further geothermal reservoir development. Hence, their identification, geological origin, and hydraulic characterization are discussed extensively. Methods: Stress indicators and fractures are interpreted from image and caliper logs of three highly deviated wells at the Sauerlach site. We transform the identified stress field into the borehole coordinate system and compare the observed orientation to the modeled stress field which assumes a homogeneous borehole surrounding. Results: High breakout occurrence, cross-cutting fractures, and a fracture orientation from N-S to NNE-SSW are observed in Sauerlach Th1. In Sauerlach Th2 and Th3, fractures strike primarily ENE-WSW and N-S to NNE-SSW. Drilling-enhanced natural fractures and drilling-induced tensile fractures are observed in all three wells and indicate the orientation of tensile stress at the borehole wall. In Sauerlach Th2 and Th3, stress transformation indicates a SH_{H}-dir. ~ N 10°E in a strike-slip stress regime. The modeled stress orientations match the observed orientations within the well Sauerlach Th1 if either SH_{H}-dir. is N 320°E in a strike-slip regime or SH_{H}-dir. is N 10°E in a normal faulting regime. Conclusion: This approach improves the detection of the local stress field especially for non-vertical wells, which has, in combination with the facture pattern, a major impact on the hydraulic system of the geothermal reservoir

Acute life-threatening extrinsic allergic alveolitis in a paint controller

Background Occupational diisocyanate-induced extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) is a rare and probably underestimated diagnosis. Two acute occupational EAA cases have been described in this context, but neither of them concerned hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) exposure. Aims To investigate the cause of a life-threatening EAA arising at work in a healthy 30-year-old female paint quality controller. Methods Occupational medical assessment, workplace evaluation, airborne and biological monitoring and immunodermatological tests. Results Diagnosis of EAA relied on congruent clinical and radiological information, confirmed occupational HDI exposure and positive IgG antibodies and patch tests. The patient worked in a small laboratory for 7 years, only occasionally using HDI-containing hardeners. While working with HDI for 6 h, she developed breathlessness, rapidly progressing to severe respiratory failure. Workplace HDI airborne exposure values ranged from undetectable levels to 4.25 p.p.b. Biological monitoring of urinary hexamethylene diamine in co-workers ranged from <1.0 to 15.4 μg/g creatinine. Patch tests 8 months later showed delayed skin reaction to HDI at 48 h. Subsequent skin biopsy showed spongiotic dermatitis with infiltration of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Conclusions We believe this is the first reported case of acute life-threatening EAA following exposure to HDI. Low concentrations of airborne HDI and relatively high urinary hexamethylene diamine suggest significant skin absorption of HDI could have significantly contributed to the development of this acute occupational EA

Poisson equation and self-consistent periodical Anderson model

We show that the formally exact expression for the free energy (with a non-relativistic Hamiltonian) for the correlated metal generates the Poisson equation within the saddle-point approximation for the electric potential, where the charge density automatically includes correlations. In this approximation the problem is reduced to the self-consistent periodical Anderson model (SCPAM). The parameter of the mixing interaction in this formulation have to be found self-consistently together with the correlated charge density. The factors, calculated by Irkhin, for the mixing interaction, which reflect the structure of the many-electron states of the \f-ion involved, arise automatically in this formulation and are quite sensitive to the specific element we are interested in. We also discuss the definitions of the mixing interaction for the mapping from ab initio to model calculations.Comment: 25 pages, no figure

Efficiency of self-cleaning properties in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

An experimental study was carried out to assess the efficiency of self-cleaning properties of three wheat cultivars and their potential in the protection against Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, a fungus that causes powdery mildew. Leaf samples with intact epicuticular structure were compared to such with wiped wax crystals. Contact angles were determined and the surfaces were subjected to a standardized contamination test with hydrophobic fluorescence powder. Another set of samples was inoculated with conidia of B. graminis and, after various time intervals, exposed to artificial fog or rain. For the intact surfaces of all cultivars contact angles of about 165° were measured. It is therefore suggested that wheat should be termed superhydrophobic. The wiping of the wax crystals led to a significant decrease of contact angles. This fact underlines the importance of surface roughness for achieving extreme water-repellency. In the standardized contamination test significantly more particles remained on the wiped surfaces than on those who had been left intact. This result was ascribed to increased adhesion on the smoothed samples. The inoculation with subsequent precipitation revealed a significantly better removal effect of conidia from intact than from wiped surfaces. This was irrespective of the wheat cultivar. In general, conidia were more effectively removed by rain than by fog. This was probably due to the higher kinetic energy and the greater amount of water when using rain. If fog application was delayed by 3 hours a higher percentage of conidia remained on the surface. As possible causes are discussed increased adhesion by conidia secretions or the development of primary germ tubes.Despite its highly efficient self-cleaning properties proved here, wheat is frequently infected by Blumeria graminis. We conclude that the high water content of the mildew conidia, the ability of Blumeria graminis to germinate at very low humidities and its rapid irreversible adhesion are effective adaptations in order to overcome the barrier of a superhydrophobic self-cleaning surface

The 9600 channels of the multi-wire proportional chamber of the H1 experiment at HERA have to be read out within 96 ns and made available to the trigger system. The tight spatial conditions at the rear end flange require a compact bidirectional readout electronics with minimal power consumption and dead material. A solution using 40 identical optical link modules, each transferring the trigger information with a physical rate of 4 x 832 Mbps via optical fibers, has been developed and commisioned. The analog pulses from the chamber can be monitored and the synchronization to the global HERA clock signal is ensured.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

Block Copolymer Directed Metamaterials and Metasurfaces for Novel Optical Devices

    Get PDF
Optical metamaterials are artificially engineered architectures that exhibit desired optical properties not found in nature. Bespoke design requires the ability to define shape, size, orientation, and composition of material structures on the nanometer length scale. Bottom-up self-assembly methods, such as block copolymer (BCP) templating, offer unique pathways to tailored features, at spatial resolution not routinely achieved by conventional top-down techniques. In this review, the authors provide the general readership with basic concepts of the underlying fabrication processes and examine optical phenomena arising from BCP-derived metamaterials and nanoresonators, with both dielectric and plasmonic characteristics. A number of diverse structural conformations designed by BCP templating and their implementation in optical devices is evaluated. The discussion includes 3D metamaterials, such as gyroidal and hyperbolic arrangements, as well as 2D metasurfaces. Based on recent developments in exploring these emerging structural and material configurations, the review further highlights unexplored opportunities offered by BCP self-assembly for novel metamaterials and metasurface devices
