Underwater Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Diving Centers. The case of Pozzuoli and Baiae (Italy)
In Pozzuoli and Baiae, in the Gulf of Naples, villas, mosaics, baths, streets, houses and harbour structures of the Roman period were submerged by the sea, as a result of the volcanism. This unique environment, severely looted over the years, has been included in a Marine Pro- tected Area since 2001. Since then, the Soprintendenza Archeologica has carried on some rese- arch and documentation works, while the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro has experimented with new techniques for the conservation of the underwater structures. The public access has been made possible with the opening of underwater archaeological trails, and through the involvement of the diving instructors active in the area, appropriately trained. Here we would like to analyse the effects of this strategy also through the lens of the tourism and diving industry, considering their needs and their expectations, together with the primary need to preserve the sites for the future generations. A Study of Secondary School Students’ Participation in a Novel Course on Genomic Principles and Practices
Since the inception of the Human Genome Project (HGP) there has, and continues to be, rapid changes in genomics, STEM, and human health. Advances, specifically in genomics, continue to be increasingly important as new knowledge in this field has led the trajectory for significant advancements in all biological disciplines. Throughout the scientific community there is an emphasis on increasing and improving genomic concepts and literacy for grades K-12. Numerous research studies report that there is generally a low level of genetic/genomic knowledge among the general public. The purpose of this research is to analyze and document evidence of secondary school students’ participation, and educational outcomes, in a novel course on genomic principles and practices. A mixed methods approach, using qualitative and quantitative methods was used to address three research questions. 1) Based on affective evidence, how did secondary school students perceive and critically judge, content topics learned in a course on modern genomic principles and practices? 2) Based on cognitive evidence, how much of the content did secondary school students learn when they participated in a course on modern genomic principles and practices? 3) Using individual interview evidence, what are the major perceptions that the secondary school students expressed throughout the duration of the course? The results for Research Question 1 demonstrated that the students gained a significant level of new knowledge pertaining to genomics after attending the course sessions, based on their pre-and post-test Likert survey data. More particularly, they expressed more interest in, and understanding of genomic principles and practices. Concurrently, they became much more critically reflective and evaluative about some of the societal and medical implications of its applications. With respect to Research Question 2, the secondary school students’ content knowledge as measured by a 25-question multiple-choice pre-and-post test administered before and after the course demonstrated a significant increase. Lastly, the participants were provided an opportunity to comment on the course through individual and collaborative interviews, in order to find out to what extent they perceived the course to be interesting and challenging. Future inquiry expanding from this research would help to establish the foundational pathway for designing a more inclusive genomics curriculum
The project PILAE, for an inventory of the submerged Roman piers. A preliminary overview
In the coastal territories between northern Tuscany and southern Campania, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, constitute a privileged observation post for any study on the port facilities in the Roman time. Along these shores, in fact, there is an amazing concentration of ancient remains connected to port infrastructures, often not very far from
the modern cities, and in many cases still recognizable beneath the sea or near it, despite the big changes suffered by the Italian coastal landscape over the past two millennia
The presence of Italian gentes in the ancient city of Lucentum is an essential topic within the study of the Romanisation in that territory. The analysis of epigraphic evidence and the the comparison with the Italian Peninsula makes possible the identification of these families, highlighting possible areas of origin in Campania and the Apennines: besides the famous Fulvius Asclas Pompeianus, traditionally linked to Pompeii (and whose origin can possibly be the subject of another hypothesis), other individuals mentioned in the epigraphic records of Alicante show a tight bond with the lands they come from
Sailing heavy weather. Underwater Cultural Heritage management in Italy
Underwater cultural heritage management in Italy, as the overall cultural heritage management, despite of the creation and development of several large-scale projects, is in a stuck situation since several decades. Political incapacity to identify a systematic and long term program, bureaucratic dif culties and legislative black-outs, on various levels and sectors (insti- tutional, academic, private), make it dif cult to plan and organize long term and far-sighting activities and lastly, the chaotic structuring of the management discipline hinders a necessary collaboration between stakeholders. National and local Ministerial Institutions, Universities, Pri- vate organizations and enterprises as well as the communities appear sometimes unconnected and in contrasting positions. Contrary, a complex and longue durée activity, as cultural heritage management should be, needs programming, systemic approach, cooperation and sharing.
