Existence and uniqueness theorems for some semi-linear equations on locally finite graphs

We study some semi-linear equations for the (m,p)(m,p)-Laplacian operator on locally finite weighted graphs. We prove existence of weak solutions for all mNm\in\mathbb{N} and p(1,+)p\in(1,+\infty) via a variational method already known in the literature by exploiting the continuity properties of the energy functionals involved. When m=1m=1, we also establish a uniqueness result in the spirit of the Brezis-Strauss Theorem. We finally provide some applications of our main results by dealing with some Yamabe-type and Kazdan-Warner-type equations on locally finite weighted graphs.Comment: 13 page

Comparative Analysis of Bearings for Micro-GT: An Innovative Arrangement

Get PDF
Microgas turbines are a widespread technology in cogenerative and propulsion applications. Bearings are a key factor in their design and development. The aim of the present research work is the development of the support system for a typical microturbine intended for power generation. To this goal, the present chapter defines the typical requirements of the machine and, afterward, describes the different technologies available to develop the support system of a reliable microturbine. Conventional (rolling element and oil-film) supports and cutting-edge (magnetic, aerodynamic, and aerostatic) bearings are reviewed. Particularly, their suitability to the operating conditions is compared by means of a literature review and elaboration of the relevant data. By analyzing all this information, a new concept for the design of a micro-GT support system is devised. Instead of using a single type of bearing as usual, the new system includes different types in order to take advantage of the best characteristics of each one and, simultaneously, to minimize the effects of the relevant flaws. The innovative support system requires a suitable bearing arrangement, which is compared with the conventional ones. The conceptual design of the innovation is completed by a discussion of its advantages, drawbacks, and prospective improvements

HIGHLIGHTS • Monovalent cation homeostasis is dysregulated upon LETM1 depletion • K+/H+ exchange activity is decreased in LETM1 knockdown cells • LETM1 depletion results in K+ accumulation in the mitochondrial matrix • LETM1 knockdown does not affect expression of major mitochondrial Ca2+ transport modulators • LETM1-regulated mitochondrial Ca2+ fluxes are dependent on Na+ Ca2+ transport across the inner membrane of mitochondria (IMM) is of major importance for their functions in bioenergetics, cell death and signaling. It is therefore tightly regulated. It has been recently proposed that LETM1—an IMM protein with a crucial role in mitochondrial K+/H+ exchange and volume homeostasis—also acts as a Ca2+/H+ exchanger. Here we show for the first time that lowering LETM1 gene expression by shRNA hampers mitochondrial K+/H+ and Na+/H+ exchange. Decreased exchange activity resulted in matrix K+ accumulation in these mitochondria. Furthermore, LETM1 depletion selectively decreased Na+/Ca2+ exchange mediated by NCLX, as observed in the presence of ruthenium red, a blocker of the Mitochondrial Ca2+ Uniporter (MCU). These data confirm a key role of LETM1 in monovalent cation homeostasis, and suggest that the effects of its modulation on mitochondrial transmembrane Ca2+ fluxes may reflect those on Na+/H+ exchange activity

LST-R: A method for assessing land surface temperature reduction in urban, hot and semi-arid Global South

Over the next 30 years, temperatures are expected to increase in hot semi-arid zones. Despite increasing studies on urban heat, cooling measures suitable for this climate zone remain poorly investigated. The proposed method is innovative because it focuses on significant landscape metrics for determining the land surface temperature (LST) and evaluating cooling measures. Recurrence of warm spells was identified analysing the daily air temperatures. Daytime and night-time LST data acquired from space were correlated with landscape metrics extracted from very high-resolution satellite imagery. Stepwise linear regression was used to identify the significant metrics that affected it. Cooling measures were selected considering implementation leeway; performance of existing measures; strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, equity analyses. Although the method was tested in Niamey, Niger, it can be applied to any city or town in hot semi-arid Global South, requiring decision-making support on cooling policies. • Landscape metrics are consistent with development standard and general requirements • Evaluation of measures to reduce land surface temperature includes experts’ advice • Equity of measures to reduce land surface temperature is considere

On the Savéant's Concerted/Stepwise Model. The Electroreduction of Halogenated Naphthalene Derivatives as a Case Study

The electroreduction of 1-Br-2-naphthol is shown to be a not-additive process with respect to the results obtained with two structurally related chiral [1,1′-Binaphthalene]-2,2′-diol, 6,6′-dibromo and 1,1′-Binaphthalene,6,6′-dibromo-2,2′-dimethoxy compounds. The 1-Br-2-naphtol reduction is accompanied by the carbon bromine dissociation, eventually producing a film due to a fast radical-radical cross reaction. The film formation is not observed in the BINOL-like chiral halogen-derivatives

Energy recovery of the biomass from livestock farms in Italy: the case of Modena Province

Get PDF
The energy recovery from manure of different Italian livestock farms is analysed by means of numerical simulation using an in-house developed code. In particular, the animal farming in the province of Modena is taken into account and biomass is exploited in an integrated system including different waste to energy technologies. In the considered system, the manure of a number of types of animals is fed into an anaerobic digester, while the digested sludge is separated into the solid and liquid fractions. The former is employed as a fuel in a downdraft gasifier, while the latter is purified by means of both forward and inverse osmosis. Finally, the obtained bio-gas and syngas are used in a cogeneration system based on a spark ignition internal combustion engine to produce electric and thermal power. The potential power production of the considered territory is estimated and compared with the energy requirements of the animal farms. Different strategies for the distributed exploitation of the manure versus a centralized solution are investigated and the relating plant size and production of electric energy and thermal energy are evaluated
