    Multi-View Reconstruction in-between Known Environments

    Abstract—We present a novel multi-view 3D reconstruction algorithm which unifies the advantages of several recent reconstruction approaches. Based on a known environment causing occlusions and on the cameras ' pixel grid discretization, an irregular partitioning of the reconstruction space is chosen. Reconstruction artifacts are rejected by using plausibility checks based on additional information about the objects to be reconstructed. The binary occupancy decision is solely performed in reconstruction space instead of fusing back-projected silhouettes in image space. Hierarchical data structures are used to reconstruct the objects progressively focusing on boundary regions. Thus, the algorithm can be stopped at any time with a certain conservative level of detail. Most parts of the algorithm may be processed in parallel using GPU programming techniques. The main application domain is the surveillance of real environments like in human/robot coexistence and cooperation scenarios

    Optimal Camera Placement to measure Distances Conservativly Regarding Static and Dynamic Obstacles

    In modern production facilities industrial robots and humans are supposed to interact sharing a common working area. In order to avoid collisions, the distances between objects need to be measured conservatively which can be done by a camera network. To estimate the acquired distance, unmodelled objects, e.g., an interacting human, need to be modelled and distinguished from premodelled objects like workbenches or robots by image processing such as the background subtraction method. The quality of such an approach massively depends on the settings of the camera network, that is the positions and orientations of the individual cameras. Of particular interest in this context is the minimization of the error of the distance using the objects modelled by the background subtraction method instead of the real objects. Here, we show how this minimization can be formulated as an abstract optimization problem. Moreover, we state various aspects on the implementation as well as reasons for the selection of a suitable optimization method, analyze the complexity of the proposed method and present a basic version used for extensive experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    Small farmers in the Romanian dairy market: Do they have a future?

    This paper investigates various modes of vertical coordination, with the focus on small farm integration in the Romanian dairy chain. It draws on results from a World Bank study based on semi-structured interviews conducted in spring 2009. The findings indicate that large and prosperous dairy chains fortify their chain efficiency by partner selection and provision of sophisticated assistance to relatively larger farmers. On the contrary, many barriers exist for small and medium-sized dairy chains (processors and farmers). The main factors hampering their potential exploitation are restricted access to inputs markets (capital, know-how) as well as poor quality of input service (agricultural service delivery, veterinary issues). The majority of cow's milk in Romania is still delivered by small farmers who have difficulties fulfilling the requirements of the modern procurement systems. However, small farmers are a relatively heterogeneous group. Hence, different development paths can be expected. In addition to working with retail chains via strengthening horizontal integration, another opportunity for small dairy farmers is to occupy a market niche.     Influence of Ibuprofen on Phospholipid Membranes

    Basic understanding of biological membranes is of paramount importance as these membranes comprise the very building blocks of life itself. Cells depend in their function on a range of properties of the membrane, which are important for the stability and function of the cell, information and nutrient transport, waste disposal and finally the admission of drugs into the cell and also the deflection of bacteria and viruses. We have investigated the influence of ibuprofen on the structure and dynamics of L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (SoyPC) membranes by means of grazing incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS), neutron reflectometry and grazing incidence neutron spin echo spectroscopy (GINSES). From the results of these experiments we were able to determine that ibuprofen induces a two-step structuring behavior in the SoyPC films, where the structure evolves from the purely lamellar phase for pure SoyPC over a superposition of two hexagonal phases to a purely hexago- nal phase at high concentrations. Additionally, introduction of ibuprofen stiffens the membranes. This behavior may be instrumental in explaining the toxic behavior of ibuprofen in long-term application.Comment: -Improved indexing in Fig. 4e) -changed concentrations to mol% -improved arguments, however conclusions stay unchange

    Differential diagnosis of syndromic craniosynostosis: a case series

    Purpose: Syndromic craniosynostosis is a rare genetic disease caused by premature fusion of one or multiple cranial sutures combined with malformations of other organs. The aim of this publication is to investigate sonographic signs of different syndromic craniosynostoses and associated malformations to facilitate a precise and early diagnosis. Methods: We identified in the period of 2000-2019 thirteen cases with a prenatal suspected diagnosis of syndromic craniosynostosis at our department. We analyzed the ultrasound findings, MRI scans, genetic results as well as the mode of delivery, and postnatal procedures. Results: Eight children were diagnosed with Apert Syndrome, two with Saethre Chotzen syndrome, one with Crouzon syndrome, and one with Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome. One child had a mutation p.(Pro253Leu) in the FGFR2 gene. We identified characteristic changes of the head shape as well as typical associated malformations. Conclusion: Second trimester diagnosis of syndromic craniosynostosis is feasible based on the identified sonographic signs. In case of a suspected diagnosis a genetic, neonatal as well as surgical counseling is recommended. We also recommend to offer a fetal MRI. The delivery should be planned in a perinatal center

    How singers adapt to room acoustical conditions

    Previous studies on adaptation of performers to room acoustic conditions mostly focused on musicians. The present study deals with the strategies used by singers, whose musical instrument is inherently part of themselves, inducing a specific perception of the sound they produce. To overcome the variations of the acoustical characteristics of the rooms where they perform, singers tend to vary their sound production (e.g. sound intensity, spectral balance, tempo, articulation). To which extend do singers change their sound production when singing in different rooms? The methodology involves 7 rooms with different acoustical characteristics in which 4 singers performed 3 excerpts a capella of musical pieces. In each place, they were recorded by means of nearfield microphone capturing only the singing voice, i.e. without reverberation from the room. Omnidirectional and binaural room acoustic measurements were also performed on stage. Room acoustical parameters are derived from the measured impulse responses and musical descriptors are extracted from each note of the singing recordings, allowing to quantify the musical performances. The degree of correlation between singing and room acoustics is further considered, revealing both common and specific strategies used by the singers

    Kagami‐Ogata syndrome: an important differential diagnosis to Beckwith‐Wiedemann syndrome

    We report the case of a fetus with sonographic characteristics of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). A 30-year-old gravida 2 para 1 was referred to our fetal medicine unit with an omphalocele. Fetal macrosomia, organomegaly, and polyhydramnios but no macroglossia were detected and BWS was suspected. Genetic testing for BWS did not confirm the suspected diagnosis as the karyotype was normal. Symptomatic polyhydramnios led to repeated amnioreductions. At 35 + 5 weeks of gestation, a female neonate of 3660 g was delivered with APGAR scores of 6/7/8, after 1/5/10 min, respectively. The abnormal shape of the thorax, facial dysmorphism, need for ventilation, and generalized muscular hypotonia led to the suspicion of Kagami-Ogata syndrome (KOS), which was confirmed by genetic testing. KOS in our patient was caused by a large deletion in the MEG3-region on chromosome 14q32 affecting the maternal allele. In this report, we highlight the notion that when sonographic signs suggestive of BWS such as macrosomia, polyhydramnios, and omphalocele are present and genetic testing does not confirm the suspected diagnosis, KOS should be tested for

    Purpose. To introduce additional methods to detect and to quantify single pathogens in the complex biofilm formation on an antibacterial dental material. Materials and Methods. A conventional (ST) and an antibacterial dental composite (B) were manufactured. In vitro: specimens were incubated with a mixture of early colonizers. Bacterial adhesion was analyzed by TaqMan PCR after 8/24 h. In situ: TaqMan PCR and 16S rRNA Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) were performed. Results. In vitro: after 8 h incubation, B was covered by 58.6% of the bacterial amount that was attached to ST. After 24 h, the amount of attached bacteria to ST remained constant on ST only slightly lower on B. In situ: after 8 h the amount of adhering A. viscosus and S. mitis was prominent on ST and reduced on B. NGS revealed that S. sanguinis, S. parasanguinis, and Gemella sanguinis were the mainly attached species with S. sanguinis dominant on ST and S. parasanguinis and G. sanguinis dominant on B. Conclusions. Initial biofilm formation was altered by B. A shift between actinomycetes and streptococci was observed in situ. TaqMan PCR and 16S rRNA NGS revealed comparable results in situ and demonstrated the usefulness of NGS to characterize complex bacterial communities

    A prognostic baseline blood biomarker and tumor growth kinetics integrated model in paclitaxel/platinum treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients

    Paclitaxel/platinum chemotherapy, the backbone of standard first-line treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), exhibits high interpatient variability in treatment response and high toxicity burden. Baseline blood biomarker concentrations and tumor size (sum of diameters) at week 8 relative to baseline (RS8) are widely investigated prognostic factors. However, joint analysis of data on demographic/clinical characteristics, blood biomarker levels, and chemotherapy exposure-driven early tumor response for improved prediction of overall survival (OS) is clinically not established. We developed a Weibull time-to-event model to predict OS, leveraging data from 365 patients receiving paclitaxel/platinum combination chemotherapy once every three weeks for ≤six cycles. A developed tumor growth inhibition model, combining linear tumor growth and first-order paclitaxel area under the concentration-time curve-induced tumor decay, was used to derive individual RS8. The median model-derived RS8 in all patients was a 20.0% tumor size reduction (range from −78% to +15%). Whereas baseline carcinoembryonic antigen, cytokeratin fragments, and thyroid stimulating hormone levels were not significantly associated with OS in a subset of 221 patients, and lactate dehydrogenase, interleukin-6 and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio levels were significant only in univariate analyses (p value < 0.05); C-reactive protein (CRP) in combination with RS8 most significantly affected OS (p value < 0.01). Compared to the median population OS of 11.3 months, OS was 128% longer at the 5th percentile levels of both covariates and 60% shorter at their 95th percentiles levels. The combined paclitaxel exposure-driven RS8 and baseline blood CRP concentrations enables early individual prognostic predictions for different paclitaxel dosing regimens, forming the basis for treatment decision and optimizing paclitaxel/platinum-based advanced NSCLC chemotherapy
