Transillumination imaging through scattering media by use of photorefractive polymers
We demonstrate the use of a near-infrared-sensitive photorefractive polymer with high efficiency for imaging through scattering media, using an all-optical holographic time gate. Imaging through nine scattering mean free paths is performed at 800 nm with a mode-locked continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser
RISE: a fast-readout imager for exoplanet transit timing
By the precise timing of the low amplitude (0.005 - 0.02 magnitude) transits
of exoplanets around their parent star it should be possible to infer the
presence of other planetary bodies in the system down to Earth-like masses. We
describe the design and construction of RISE, a fast-readout frame transfer
camera for the Liverpool Telescope designed to carry out this experiment. The
results of our commissioning tests are described as well as the data reduction
procedure necessary. We present light curves of two objects, showing that the
desired timing and photometric accuracy can be obtained providing that
autoguiding is used to keep the target on the same detector pixel for the

Photoionization and Photoelectric Loading of Barium Ion Traps
Simple and effective techniques for loading barium ions into linear Paul
traps are demonstrated. Two-step photoionization of neutral barium is achieved
using a weak intercombination line (6s2 1S0 6s6p 3P1, 791 nm) followed by
excitation above the ionization threshold using a nitrogen gas laser (337 nm).
Isotopic selectivity is achieved by using a near Doppler-free geometry for
excitation of the triplet 6s6p 3P1 state. Additionally, we report a
particularly simple and efficient trap loading technique that employs an

Constraints on Higher-Order Perturbative Corrections in Semileptonic Decays from Residual Renormalization-Scale Dependence
The constraint of a progressive decrease in residual renormalization scale
dependence with increasing loop order is developed as a method for obtaining
bounds on unknown higher-order perturbative corrections to
renormalization-group invariant quantities. This technique is applied to the
inclusive semileptonic process (explicitly known to
two-loop order) to obtain bounds on the three- and four-loop perturbative
coefficients that are not accessible via the renormalization group. Using the
principle of minimal sensitivity, an estimate is obtained for the perturbative
contributions to that incorporates

Rotavirus genetic diversity, disease association, and temporal change in hospitalized rural Kenyan children
Background. The effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines will be dependent on the immunity conferred against prevalent and emergent variants causing severe diarrheal disease. Longitudinal surveillance of disease-causing strains is a prerequisite to intervention.
Methods. Molecular characterization was conducted on rotavirus-positive stool samples from children admitted with diarrhea to a rural district hospital during 2002-2004. Extracted viral RNA was separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and rotavirus VP4 (P types) and VP7 (G types) specificities were determined.
Results. Among 558 investigated cases, the predominant genotype was P[8]G1 (42%), followed by P[8]G9 (15%), P[4]G8 (7%), P[6]G8 (6%), and P[8]G8 (4%), with 10% mixed strains. Overall, there were 6 different P types and 7 G types. No association was identified between genotype and child age, sex, or severity of diarrhea. The P and G genotypes and polyacrylamide gel electropherotypes showed significant temporal variation in frequency: P[8]G1 decreased from 51% (95% confidence interval [CI], 43%-58%) in 2002 to 30% (95% CI, 24%-37%) in 2004, and P[4]G8 increased from 2% (95% CI, 0%-5%) in 2002 to 13% (95% CI, 9%-19%). Quarterly data revealed seasonally endemic and emergence and/or decay patterns.
Conclusions. Our study of rotavirus strains causing severe diarrhea in rural Kenyan children showed a predominance of P[8]G1 and confirms the importance of G8 and G9 strains in sub-Saharan Africa. Considerable genetic diversity of rotavirus strains was observed, including substantial mixed and unusual types, coupled with significant temporal strain variation and emergence. These results warn of variable vaccine efficacy and the need for long-term surveillance of circulating rotavirus genotypes
An ingress and a complete transit of HD 80606 b
We have used four telescopes at different longitudes to obtain
near-continuous lightcurve coverage of the star HD 80606 as it was transited by
its \sim 4-MJup planet. The observations were performed during the predicted
transit windows around the 25th of October 2008 and the 14th of February 2009.
Our data set is unique in that it simultaneously constrains the duration of the
transit and the planet's period. Our Markov-Chain Monte Carlo analysis of the
light curves, combined with constraints from radial-velocity data, yields
system parameters consistent with previously reported values. We find a
planet-to-star radius ratio marginally smaller than previously reported,
corresponding to a planet radius of Rp = 0.921 \pm 0.036RJup .Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, MNRAS accepte
A transit timing analysis of nine RISE light curves of the exoplanet system TrES-3
We present nine newly observed transits of TrES-3, taken as part of a transit
timing program using the RISE instrument on the Liverpool Telescope. A
Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo analysis was used to determine the planet-star radius
ratio and inclination of the system, which were found to be
Rp/Rstar=0.1664^{+0.0011}_{-0.0018} and i = 81.73^{+0.13}_{-0.04} respectively,
consistent with previous results. The central transit times and uncertainties
were also calculated, using a residual-permutation algorithm as an independent
check on the errors. A re-analysis of eight previously published TrES-3 light
curves was conducted to determine the transit times and uncertainties using
consistent techniques. Whilst the transit times were not found to be in
agreement with a linear ephemeris, giving chi^2 = 35.07 for 15 degrees of
freedom, we interpret this to be the result of systematics in the light curves
rather than a real transit timing variation. This is because the light curves
that show the largest deviation from a constant period either have relatively
little out-of-transit coverage, or have clear systematics. A new ephemeris was
calculated using the transit times, and was found to be T_c(0) = 2454632.62610
+- 0.00006 HJD and P = 1.3061864 +- 0.0000005 days. The transit times were then
used to place upper mass limits as a function of the period ratio of a
potential perturbing planet, showing that our data are sufficiently sensitive
to have probed for sub-Earth mass planets in both interior and exterior 2:1

The Automatic Real-Time GRB Pipeline of the 2-m Liverpool Telescope
The 2-m Liverpool Telescope (LT), owned by Liverpool John Moores University,
is located in La Palma (Canary Islands) and operates in fully robotic mode. In
2005, the LT began conducting an automatic GRB follow-up program. On receiving
an automatic GRB alert from a Gamma-Ray Observatory (Swift, INTEGRAL, HETE-II,
IPN) the LT initiates a special override mode that conducts follow-up
observations within 2-3 min of the GRB onset. This follow-up procedure begins
with an initial sequence of short (10-s) exposures acquired through an r' band
filter. These images are reduced, analyzed and interpreted automatically using
pipeline software developed by our team called "LT-TRAP" (Liverpool Telescope
Transient Rapid Analysis Pipeline); the automatic detection and successful
identification of an unknown and potentially fading optical transient triggers
a subsequent multi-color imaging sequence. In the case of a candidate brighter
than r'=15, either a polarimetric (from 2006) or a spectroscopic observation
(from 2007) will be triggered on the LT. If no candidate is identified, the
telescope continues to obtain z', r' and i' band imaging with increasingly
longer exposure times. Here we present a detailed description of the LT-TRAP
and briefly discuss the illustrative case of the afterglow of GRB 050502a,
whose automatic identification by the LT just 3 min after the GRB, led to the
acquisition of the first early-time (< 1 hr) multi-color light curve of a GRB

Can the Renormalization Group Improved Effective Potential be used to estimate the Higgs Mass in the Conformal Limit of the Standard Model?
We consider the effective potential in the standard model with a single
Higgs doublet in the limit that the only mass scale present is
radiatively generated. Using a technique that has been shown to determine
completely in terms of the renormalization group (RG) functions when using the
Coleman-Weinberg (CW) renormalization scheme, we first sum leading-log (LL)
contributions to using the one loop RG functions, associated with five
couplings (the top quark Yukawa coupling , the quartic coupling of the Higgs
field , the SU(3) gauge coupling , and the couplings
and ). We then employ the two loop RG functions with the three couplings
, , to sum the next-to-leading-log (NLL) contributions to and
then the three to five loop RG functions with one coupling to sum all the
contributions to . In order to compute these sums, it is
necessary to convert those RG functions that have been originally computed
explicitly in the minimal subtraction (MS) scheme to their form in the CW
scheme. The Higgs mass can then be determined from the effective potential: the
result is decreases to at
order and at order. No reasonable
estimate of can be made at orders or . This is taken
to be an indication that this mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking is in
fact viable, though one in which there is slow convergence towards the actual
value of . The mass is argued to be an upper bound on
