Learning from failure in conservation: Individual, team, and organizational dynamics

    Get PDF
Conservation aims to ensure the persistence of biodiversity despite myriad and mounting threats at the intersection of biological processes and socio-economic activity, and many efforts have struggled to achieve success. Failure is inevitable in the complex contexts in which conservation initiatives take place and yet is largely underexamined. Reasons for this shortcoming are multidimensional, encompassing behavioral and cognitive limitations at the individual, group, and organizational levels. Conservation is recognized as primarily about people and the choices they make, but there is a gap in what we know about how conservation professionals themselves as people operating within teams and organizations learn from and manage failure. My research investigates the current state of failure management in conservation, building upon existing literature in organizational learning and drawing insights from other disciplines to identify ways for conservation to more effectively learn from failure. To do this, I first conduct a literature review to investigate factors contributing to a lack of learning from failure and success in conservation. I find that failure reports are rare and largely unstandardized, and human factors such as stakeholder relationships were the most commonly cited cause of project failure. I then carry out a strategic review of organizational learning literature to provide an inter-disciplinary synthesis of thinking and practice of failure management. Armed with these broad insights, I delve into individual intentions to engage in learning from failure behaviors, finding that social norms, psychological safety, organizational support, and leader behavior play important roles in facilitating learning from failure. To place these individual motivations into a broader context, I then investigate barriers and enabling conditions for learning from failure through a multimethod qualitative study. Finally, I synthesize my findings and provide an operational model and actionable steps going forward. Providing the first empirical examination of failure in conservation, this thesis highlights both shortfalls in failure management in conservation and, more importantly, opportunities to create a learning transformation going forward.Open Acces

    Get PDF
Iron deficiency is a nationwide concern. Dietary strategies issued by national organizations, aim to help prevent childhood iron deficiency. This study examined the relationship of dietary factors with iron status in WIC participants 6--24 months. This was a cross-sectional study of 50 rural infants and toddlers.;Iron deficiency was determined from one blood sample analyzed for serum ferritin (SF) and transferrin saturation (TS). Iron deficiency was defined as SF ≀ 15 ug/dL and TS ≀ 15%. Two, 24-hour dietary recalls were collected. Stepwise logistic regression was used to evaluate factors predictive of iron status.;Thirteen children (26%) were iron deficient. Iron status could be predicted from iron-fortified infant or adult cereal intake (p = 0.04). Mean SF tended to be lower in those consuming \u3e24 ounces of milk per day (p = 0.07). On regression analysis, meat, fish, or poultry intake was positively (p = 0.018) and calcium intake was negatively (p = 0.0004) associated with SF

Summary Accelerations produced at the stub-axles of a vehicle during passage over a road surface are a prominent source of vibrations of the vehicle. This memo describes the instrumentation of a motor car to record these accelerations, and the statistical analysis of records obtained, in terms of Amplitude Distribution, Power Spectral Density Function and Auto.. correlation Function. Cross-correlation functions between some of the acceleration signals are included and their salient features discussed, together with the utility of the other statistical descriptions. Sugr4estions are made for laboratory work to increase the information to be gained from such measurements and the generality with which it can be applied

Course Design for Quality Online Education: Effective Strategies from the Viewpoint of Undergraduate Teaching Assistants

    Get PDF
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced colleges and universities to suddenly transition to a mostly-to-fully online teaching format. Given the nature of the transition and general reservations about online instruction, many were concerned educational quality and achievement would be compromised by large margins. We sought to determine what course design features, if any, helped support undergraduate educational achievement during a sudden transition to 100% online instruction. We addressed our research aim using adapted principles for reflexive thematic analysis, the discernment of ways to interpret data using diverse perspectives and the critique of assumptions (RWJ Foundation, 2008). Following instructor request (JDT), two undergraduate teaching assistants (CEH, JDS) independently discerned design feature quality, instructor assumptions, and student response to features (i.e., anonymous feedback, participation patterns). Analysis was applied to one asynchronous upper-division, general education, writing-intensive kinesiology course (38 enrolled students, 2020 Spring Term). A reiterative process was used, with undergraduate teaching assistants making comparisons to their experience completing the course in-person the previous term (Winter 2020). Five design features evidently helped to support educational achievement during the sudden transition to 100% online instruction: discussion boards, summary slides, reminder emails/slides, video lectures, and posted lecture slides. Students valued the “constant stream” of communication and opportunity to self-pace. Discussion boards incentivized content application and promoted appreciation of peers’ viewpoints, both of which helped with learning and writing-to-learn.The five design features, in combination, provided high fidelity with in-person instruction. We will discuss our findings, limitations of our study, and potential ways to improve the design of online courses based on our results

Giving a voice to patient experiences through the insights of pragmatism

    Get PDF
As a philosophical position, pragmatism can be critiqued to distinguish truth only with methods that bring about desired results, predominantly with scientific enquiry. The article hopes to dismiss this oversimplification and propose that within mental health nursing, enquiry enlightened by pragmatism can be anchored to methods helping to tackle genuine human problems. Whilst pragmatists suggest one reality exists, fluctuating experiences and shifting beliefs about the world can inhabit within; hence, pragmatists propose reality has the potential to change. Moreover, pragmatism includes being cognisant of what works to whom reality concerns, making reality context‐driven, with a view to understand how actions shape experiences so what is generated has usefulness. Hence, it somewhat follows pragmatism can inform mental health nursing, after all, nursing is a discipline of action, and awareness is needed in how actions produce experiences that patients find helpful. Given the principles of recovery are preferably adopted in mental health care, the paper will explore how pragmatism can help nurses move towards that goal; specifically, with patients voicing their experiences. This is because like pragmatism, recovery subscribes to hope that reality can progress, and through meaningful experiences and beliefs, patients have expertise about personal difficulties alongside how life may flourish, despite mental illness

Control of lipid oxidation with antioxidants during frozen pork shelf-life

    Get PDF
Master of ScienceFood Science InstituteElizabeth BoyleAntioxidants are used to limit oxidation in many food products; however, there is limited published research evaluating the incorporation of antioxidants in ground pork trim. The objective of this research was to assess lipid oxidation in ground pork fat trim containing no antioxidants, nitrite at 70 ppm, citric acid-based vinegar buffered to 6.0 to 7.0 pH at 0.35% of the total formula, rosemary extract at 0.3% of the total formula, and rosemary green tea (RGT) extract at 0.28% of the total formula during 12 m of frozen storage at -17°C. The treatments (nine replications) were packaged in plastic, heat-sealed bags that were cased in a corrugate box with a weight of 22.68 kg. Treatments, quick frozen at a wind chill of -42°C, reached an equilibrated temperature of -28°C within 26 h and were stored in a commercial freezer at -17°C. Fatty acid profiles and proximate analyses were analyzed for each treatment at the beginning of the study. The control and vinegar treatments at 61.65 and 61.15% fat, respectively, had higher (P < 0.01) percent fat than the nitrite, RGT, and rosemary treatments and was higher than the 58 ± 2% target. This, however, was attributed to a small sample size from a larger batch that was evaluated in real time on the production line to be within 2% of 58%. There were slight differences (P < 0.05) in fatty acid profiles and proximate analyses among the treatments, and these differences were potentially due to sample collection in a commercial pork processing facility where hogs were sourced from multiple production facilities. The aerobic plate count and pH of the samples were measured each month for 12 m. The aerobic plate counts ranged from 2.47 to 2.98 log10 CFU/g throughout 12 m storage at -17°C and 2.69 to 2.80 log10 CFU/g among the individual treatments. Pork trim pH varied from 5.79 to 6.23 during 12 m of storage. The nitrite treatment had a higher (P < 0.05) pH than the pork trim containing rosemary. Lipid oxidation was measured monthly using thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBA), gas chromatography, and a trained sensory panel. The malonaldehyde (MDA) of RGT and rosemary treatments remained below 0.2 mg MDA/kg during frozen storage. The control, vinegar, and nitrite treatments, however, increased resulting in higher (P < 0.05) MDA at 8 through 12 m than rosemary and RGT. Vinegar exceeded 1.0 mg MDA/kg at 12 m, where a consumer is likely to taste oxidation in a pork product. Hexanal, measured by gas chromatography, was similar (P < 0.05) for the control, rosemary, and RGT treatments during storage and stayed at or below 0.1 mg hexanal/kg throughout the 12 m of frozen storage. None of the treatments, however, exceeded 1.0 mg hexanal/kg, or reached levels of hexanal that would impact sensory. The trained sensory panel ranked rancid aroma, cardboard aroma, rancid flavor, and cardboard flavor on a 100-point scale where 0 was none and 100 was intense aroma or flavor. All treatments for all four measurements were below 7 on the 100-point scale at each month through 10 m. At 11 m, the vinegar treatment was removed from further evaluation due to due to off aroma and flavors such as meat or sour, though not defined as oxidation. The largest sensory differences among the treatments occurred at 12 m of storage where rosemary and RGT were lower (P < 0.05) than control for rancid and cardboard aroma and flavor. None of the treatments exceeded 30 on the sensory scale. The color was measured instrumentally and by the trained sensory panel using the National Pork Board 6-point scale. The reaction of nitrite with myoglobin impacted the color of the trim based on lower (P < 0.05) a* and b*; however, this color change is expected in a cured product. All the color differences were less than 3 on the color scale, and most were below two. Since most of those differences only a trained panelist will notice, the instrumental color changes do not eliminate any of the treatments. As a result, Rosemary and RGT treatments were effective at slowing oxidation of frozen pork trim during 12 m of storage and may be used to create a flexible supply chain. to maintain pork quality during frozen storage
