    Cautions about precautions

    Get PDF
Assuming an animal to be sentient in the absence of conclusive evidence to the contrary is an extreme position, hence it should not and could not be the default assumption. Birch explains how the precautionary principle may be used to substantiate decisions to give the animal the benefit of doubt. Although I am reluctant to accept all of his points, Birch has provided an excellent argument for the use of the precautionary principle for the detection of animal sentience. I agree that more research is needed to refine and understand this relationship

Records of the Greenside Darter, Etheostoma Blennioides from the Susquehanna River Drainage in Pennsylvania

Author Institution: Department of Biological Sciences, York College of Pennsylvania; Department of Biology and Center for Environmental Studies, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Appalachian Environmental Laboratory, University of Maryland, Frostburg State College CampusA population of the greenside darter, Etheostoma blennioides Rafinesque, is recorded for the first time from the Susquehanna River drainage. Meristics are significantly different from populations in the adjacent Allegheny and upper Genesee drainages for dorsal rays and least caudal peduncle scales. Taxonomic comparison places it in the subspecies E. b. blennioides. The population is believed to have entered the Susquehanna drainage via stream capture from the Allegheny. Its presence until now has been undetected because emphasis on taxonomic-distributional research has centered in other geographic areas

Self-stabilised fractality of sea-coasts through damped erosion

Erosion of rocky coasts spontaneously creates irregular seashores. But the geometrical irregularity, in turn, damps the sea-waves, decreasing the average wave amplitude. There may then exist a mutual self-stabilisation of the waves amplitude together with the irregular morphology of the coast. A simple model of such stabilisation is studied. It leads, through a complex dynamics of the earth-sea interface, to the appearance of a stationary fractal seacoast with dimension close to 4/3. Fractal geometry plays here the role of a morphological attractor directly related to percolation geometry.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
