SIZE-ASSORTATIVE MATING IN A NATURAL POPULATION OF VIVIPARUS ATER (GASTROPODA: PROSOBRANCHIA) IN LAKE ZĂśRICH, SWITZERLAND
The number of mating pairs, the size of the mating partners, and the distribution of individuals of Vivi-parus ater on a grid in Lake ZĂĽrich were recorded during one breeding season in 1990. There was positive assortative mating with respect to shell size. The proportion of copulating individuals ranged from 1% to 6% (average 3%) of the active population at any one time. Individual snails copulated 60 times on average from April until November. Snails were abundant and copulated in shallow water close to the shore in Spring. They moved towards deeper areas in Autumn. V. ater copulated on all substrates at any depth (1-9 m)of the grid. The spatial distribution of copulations throughout the summer reflected the pattern of snail abundanc
Role of magnetic and orbital ordering at the metal-insulator transition in NdNiO3
Soft x-ray resonant scattering at the Ni L2,3 edges is used to test models of
magnetic and orbital-ordering below the metal-insulator transition in NdNiO3.
The large branching ratio of the L3 to L2 intensities of the (1/2,0,1/2)
reflection and the observed azimuthal angle and polarization dependence
originates from a non collinear magnetic structure. The absence of an orbital
signal and the non collinear magnetic structure show that the nickelates are
materials for which orbital ordering is absent at the metal-insulator
transition.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Physical Review B rapid communication, to be

Method and apparatus for controlling an earthworking implement to preserve a crown on a road surface
A method and apparatus for controlling an earthworking implement on an earthworking machine to preserve a crown on the surface of a road, including determining the position of the crown on the road surface, choosing a sloped grade on one side of the crown, positioning the earthworking implement on the sloped grade so that a first end of the earthworking implement is on the road surface. The processor determines a desired position of a second end of the earthworking implement so that the second end overlaps the crown and the earthworking implement does not cut the crown

A precision study of the fine tuning in the DiracNMSSM
Recently the DiracNMSSM has been proposed as a possible solution to reduce
the fine tuning in supersymmetry. We determine the degree of fine tuning needed
in the DiracNMSSM with and without non-universal gaugino masses and compare it
with the fine tuning in the GNMSSM. To apply reasonable cuts on the allowed
parameter regions we perform a precise calculation of the Higgs mass. In
addition, we include the limits from direct SUSY searches and dark matter
abundance. We find that both models are comparable in terms of fine tuning,
with the minimal fine tuning in the GNMSSM slightly smaller.Comment: 20 pages + appendices, 10 figure
New bounds on trilinear R-parity violation from lepton flavor violating observables
Many extensions of the leptonic sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard
Model (MSSM) are known, most of them leading to observable flavor violating
effects. It has been recently shown that the 1-loop contributions to lepton
flavor violating three-body decays involving the boson
may be dominant, that is, much more important than the usual photonic penguins.
Other processes like - conversion in nuclei and flavor violating
decays into mesons are also enhanced by the same effect. This is for instance
also the case in the MSSM with trilinear R-parity violation. The aim of this
work is to derive new bounds on the relevant combinations of R-parity violating
couplings and to compare them with previous results in the literature. For
heavy supersymmetric spectra the limits are improved by several orders of
magnitude. For completeness, also constraints coming from flavor violating
-decays and tree-level decay channels are presented
for a set of benchmark points.Comment: 21 pages; 5 figures; v2: corrected bug, conclusion unchange
