Cocaine Exposure Shifts the Balance of Associative Encoding from Ventral to Dorsolateral Striatum
Both dorsal and ventral striatum are implicated in the “habitization” of behavior that occurs in addiction. Here we examined the effect of cocaine exposure on associative encoding in these two regions. Neural activity was recorded during go/no-go discrimination learning and reversal. Activity in ventral striatum developed and reversed rapidly, tracking the valence of the predicted outcome, whereas activity in dorsolateral striatum developed and reversed more slowly, tracking discriminative responding. This difference is consistent with the putative roles of these two areas in promoting habit-like behavior. Dorsolateral striatum has been directly implicated in habit or stimulus–response learning, whereas ventral striatum appears to be involved indirectly by allowing cues associated with reward to exert a general motivational influence on responding. Interestingly cocaine exposure did not uniformly enhance processing across both regions. Instead cocaine reduced the degree and flexibility of cue-evoked firing in ventral striatum while marginally enhanced cue-selective firing in dorsolateral striatum. Thus cocaine exposure causes regionally specific effects on neural processing in striatum; these effects may promote the habitization of behavior by shifting control from ventral to dorsolateral regions
A New Bound on Excess Frequency Noise in Second Harmonic Generation in PPKTP at the 10^-19 Level
We report a bound on the relative frequency fluctuations in nonlinear second
harmonic generation. A 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is used to read out the phase of a
Mach-Zehnder interferometer while PPKTP, a nonlinear crystal, is placed in each
arm to generate second harmonic light. By comparing the arm length difference
of the Mach Zehnder as read out by the fundamental 1064 nm light, and its
second harmonic at 532 nm, we can bound the excess frequency noise introduced
in the harmonic generation process. We report an amplitude spectral density of
frequency noise with total RMS frequency deviation of 3mHz and a minimum value
of 20 {\mu}Hz/rtHz over 250 seconds with a measurement bandwidth of 128 Hz,
corresponding to an Allan deviation of 10^-19 at 20 seconds.Comment: Submitted to Optics Express June 201
A Statistical View of Learning in the Centipede Game
In this article we evaluate the statistical evidence that a population of
students learn about the sub-game perfect Nash equilibrium of the centipede
game via repeated play of the game. This is done by formulating a model in
which a player's error in assessing the utility of decisions changes as they
gain experience with the game. We first estimate parameters in a statistical
model where the probabilities of choices of the players are given by a Quantal
Response Equilibrium (QRE) (McKelvey and Palfrey, 1995, 1996, 1998), but are
allowed to change with repeated play. This model gives a better fit to the data
than similar models previously considered. However, substantial correlation of
outcomes of games having a common player suggests that a statistical model that
captures within-subject correlation is more appropriate. Thus we then estimate
parameters in a model which allows for within-player correlation of decisions
and rates of learning. Through out the paper we also consider and compare the
use of randomization tests and posterior predictive tests in the context of
exploratory and confirmatory data analyses
Velocity-selective direct frequency-comb spectroscopy of atomic vapors
We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of two-photon direct
frequency-comb spectroscopy performed through velocity-selective excitation. In
particular, we explore the effect of repetition rate on the
two-photon transitions
excited in a rubidium atomic vapor cell. The transitions occur via step-wise
excitation through the states by use of the direct
output of an optical frequency comb. Experiments were performed with two
different frequency combs, one with a repetition rate of MHz and
one with a repetition rate of MHz. The experimental spectra are

Descriptions, truth value intuitions, and questions
International audienceSince the famous debate between Russell (Mind 14: 479–493, 1905, Mind 66: 385–389, 1957) and Strawson (Mind 59: 320–344, 1950; Introduction to logical theory, 1952; Theoria, 30: 96–118, 1964) linguistic intuitions about truth values have been considered notoriously unreliable as a guide to the semantics of definite descriptions. As a result, most existing semantic analyses of definites leave a large number of intuitions unexplained. In this paper, I explore the nature of the relationship between truth value intuitions and non-referring definites. Inspired by comments in Strawson (Introduction to logical theory, 1964), I argue that given certain systematic considerations, one can provide a structured explanation of conflicting intuitions. I show that the intuitions of falsity, which proponents of a Russellian analysis often appeal to, result from evaluating sentences in relation to specific questions in context. This is shown by developing a method for predicting when sentences containing non-referring definites elicit intuitions of falsity.
