    Impact of Pre-and Postpartum Nutrition on March-calving Cow and Progeny Productivity

    March-calving cows were fed hay or grazed corn residue prepartum, and then either fed hay or grazed subirrigated meadow postpartum. Combinations of these different feeding strategies impacted body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) during the pre-and postpartum period; however, resulted in similar pregnancy rates. Although differences were not observed in cow pregnancy rates, a benefit in pre-weaning growth was observed for calves from the dams in postpartum meadow treatment. A tendency for an improvement in marbling score was observed for steers born to cows fed hay prepartum, perhaps indicating a higher plane of nutrition prepartum may improve quality grade

    Using PBL to Prepare Educators and Emergency Managers to Plan for Severe Weather

    Within the past 10 years severe weather has been responsible for an annual average of 278 fatalities in the United States (National Weather Service, 2013). During severe weather special populations are populations of high concentrations of people that cannot respond quickly. Schools show both of these characteristics. The average lead time for tornadoes is only 11 minutes (Simmons & Sutter, 2008), so decisions must be made decisively and leaders must be prepared in advance. This paper describes how an instructional design process was used to develop an interdisciplinary problem based learning training for both school personnel and emergency managers. In this real world based activity, participants simulated difficult decisions that must be made during severe weather to develop a better understanding of each others’ roles and responsibilities

    Effects of Grazing on Nebraska Sandhills Meadow Forage Nutrient Content

    Nebraska Sandhills subirrigated meadow pastures were used to measure the effects of grazing on forage nutrient content in summer pastures. Non-grazed pastures had greater diet CP content than grazed pastures early in the grazing season. By late July, grazed vs. non-grazed pastures did not differ in diet CP content. Non-grazed pastures had greater in vitro organic matter disappearance compared with grazed pastures from late July through September; however, early summer pastures were not affected. Observed results indicate the greatest differences in nutrient content between grazed and non-grazed meadow pastures occur early and late in the grazing season when the majority of cool-season grass species growth occurs

    Reliability and Validity of the Body Caliper to Evaluate Body Composition

    The Body Caliper is a relatively new model of skin–fold caliper (approximately 13 years old) whose reliability and validity has yet to be investigated on an adult population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Body Caliper as an instrument and method for evaluating body composition in adults. One hundred adults (62 men, 38 women) aged 18 to 60 years participated in this cross–sectional study. Skin–fold measurements were taken with the Body Caliper using the YMCA protocol, and body density was calculated by the Jackson & Pollock sum–of–3 equations for men and women. Hydrostatic weighing served as the criterion method that the Body Caliper was compared to for validation. The reliability of the Body Caliper was assessed by an intraclass correlation coefficient and was proven reliable (ICC= .997). The validity of the Body Caliper was assessed by Bland-Altman analysis and was proven valid by 96% of the sample reaching agreement between the two methods. The results of this study have demonstrated the Body Caliper to be a reliable and valid instrument and method for evaluating body composition

The final version is available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.The social difficulties of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are typically explained as a disruption in the Shared Attention Mechanism (SAM) sub-component of the theory of mind (ToM) system. In the current paper, we explore the hypothesis that SAM's capacity to construct the self-other-object relations necessary for shared-attention arises from a self-categorization process, which is weaker among those with more autistic-like traits. We present participants with self-categorization and shared-attention tasks, and measure their autism-spectrum quotient (AQ). Results reveal a negative relationship between AQ and shared-attention, via self-categorization, suggesting a role for self-categorization in the disruption in SAM seen in ASD.     Characteristics of Coplanar Waveguide on Sapphire for High Temperature Applications (25 to 400 degrees C)

    This paper presents the characteristics of coplanar waveguide transmission lines fabricated on R-plane sapphire substrates as a function of temperature across the temperature range of 25 to 400 C. Effective permittivity and attenuation are measured on a high temperature probe station. Two techniques are used to obtain the transmission line characteristics, a Thru-Reflect-Line calibration technique that yields the propagation coefficient and resonant stubs. To a first order fit of the data, the effective permittivity and the attenuation increase linearly with temperature
