A flux-ratio anomaly in the CO spectral line emission from gravitationally-lensed quasar MG J0414+0534
We present an analysis of archival observations with the Atacama Large
(sub-)Millimetre Array (ALMA) of the gravitationally lensed quasar MG
J0414+0534, which show four compact images of the quasar and an Einstein ring
from the dust associated with the quasar host galaxy. We confirm that the
flux-ratio anomalies observed in the mid-infrared and radio persists into the
sub-mm for the continuum images of the quasar. We report the detection of CO
(11-10) spectral line emission, which traces a region of compact gas around the
quasar nucleus. This line emission also shows evidence of a flux-ratio anomaly
between the merging lensed images that is consistent with those observed at
other wavelengths, suggesting high-excitation CO can also provide a useful
probe of substructures that is unaffected by microlensing or dust extinction.
However, we do not detect the candidate dusty dwarf galaxy that was previously
reported with this dataset, which we conclude is due to a noise artefact. Thus,
the cause of the flux-ratio anomaly between the merging lensed images is still
unknown. The composite compact and diffuse emission in this system suggest
lensed quasar-starbursts will make excellent targets for detecting dark
sub-haloes and testing models for dark matter.Comment: Accepted as MNRAS Lette
DID VIETNAM VETERANS GET SICKER IN THE 1990s? THE COMPLICATED EFFECTS OF MILITARY SERVICE ON SELF-REPORTED HEALTH
The veterans disability compensation (VDC) program, which provides a monthly stipend to disabled veterans, is the third largest American disability insurance program. Since the late 1990s, VDC growth has been driven primarily by an increase in claims from Vietnam veterans, raising concerns about costs as well as health. We use the draft lottery to study the long-term effects of Vietnam-era military service on health and work in the 2000 Census. These estimates show no significant overall effects on employment or work-related disability status, with a small effect on non-work-related disability for whites. On the other hand, estimates for white men with low earnings potential show a large negative impact on employment and a marked increase in non-work-related disability rates. The differential impact of Vietnam-era service on low-skill men cannot be explained by more combat or war-theatre exposure for the least educated, leaving the relative attractiveness of VDC for less skilled men and the work disincentives embedded in the VDC system as a likely explanation.

Physicochemical Properties and Catalytic Behavior of the Molecular Sieve SSZ-70
SSZ-70 is synthesized using 1,3-bis(isobutyl)imidazolium, 1,3-bis(cyclohexyl)imidazolium, and 1,3-bis(cycloheptyl)imidazolium structure directing agents (SDAs), and the solids obtained are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), ^(29)Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), electron microscopy, nitrogen and hydrocarbon adsorption, and thermogravimetric analyses. The physicochemical properties of SSZ-70 show that it is a new molecular sieve that has similarities to MWW-type materials. The catalytic behavior of SSZ-70 is evaluated through the use of the constraint index (CI) test. Distinct differences in the reactivity between Al-SSZ-70 and SSZ-25 (MWW) are observed and are the consequences of the structural differences between these two molecular sieves
Strong lensing reveals jets in a sub-microJy radio quiet quasar
We present e-MERLIN and EVN observations which reveal unambiguous jet
activity within radio quiet quasar HS~0810+2554. With an intrinsic flux density
of 880~nJy, this is the faintest radio source ever imaged. The findings present
new evidence against the idea that radio loud and radio quiet quasars are
powered by different underlying radio emission mechanisms, showing instead that
the same AGN mechanism can operate as the dominant source of radio emission
even in the very lowest radio luminosity quasars. Thanks to strong
gravitational lensing, our source is not only visible, but with VLBI is imaged
to a scale of just 0.27~pc: the highest ever resolution image of a radio quiet
quasar. Brightness temperatures of at least ~K are associated
with two highly compact components, and subsequent modelling of the lensed
system has revealed that the components are linearly aligned on opposing sides
of the optical quasar core, with the typical morphology of a compact symmetric
object (CSO). Given that this source has been found to fall on the radio--FIR
correlation, we suggest that the radio--FIR correlation cannot always be used
to rule out AGN activity in favour of star-formation activity. The correlation
-- or at least its scatter -- may conceal the coexistence of kinetic and
radiative feedback modes in AGN. Modelling of the lensing mass itself points to
a non-smooth mass distribution, hinting at the presence of dark matter
substructure which has manifested as astrometric perturbations of the VLBI

Potential formulation of the dispersion relation for a uniform, magnetized plasma with stationary ions in terms of a vector phasor
The derivation of the helicon dispersion relation for a uniform plasma with
stationary ions subject to a constant background magnetic field is reexamined
in terms of the potential formulation of electrodynamics. Under the same
conditions considered by the standard derivation, the nonlinear self-coupling
between the perturbed electron flow and the potential it generates is
addressed. The plane wave solution for general propagation vector is determined
for all frequencies and expressed in terms of a vector phasor. The behavior of
the solution as described in vacuum units depends upon the ratio of
conductivity to the magnitude of the background field. Only at low conductivity
and below the cyclotron frequency can significant propagation occur as

Can processes make relationships work? The Triple Helix between structure and action
This contribution seeks to explore how complex adaptive theory can be applied at the conceptual level to unpack Triple Helix models. We use two cases to examine this issue â the Finnish Strategic Centres for Science, Technology & Innovation (SHOKs) and the Canadian Business-led Networks of Centres of Excellence (BL-NCE). Both types of centres are organisational structures that aspire to be business-led, with a considerable portion of their activities driven by (industrial) usersâ interests and requirements. Reflecting on the centresâ activities along three dimensions â knowledge generation, consensus building and innovation â we contend that conceptualising the Triple Helix from a process perspective will improve the dialogue between stakeholders and shareholders

The 158 micron (CII) mapping of galaxies: Probing the atomic medium
Using the MPE/UCB Far-infrared Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FIFI) on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), we have made large scale maps of (CII) in the spiral galaxies NGC 6946, NGC 891, M83 and the peculiar elliptical Cen A, thus allowing for the first time, detailed studies of the spatial distribution of the FIR line emission in external galaxies. We find that the (CII) emission comes from a mixture of components of interstellar gas. The brightest emission is associated with the nuclear regions, a second component traces the spiral arms as seen in the nearly face on spiral galaxies NGC 6946 and M83 and the largest star forming/H2 regions contained within them, and another extended component of low brightness can be detected in all of the galaxies far from the nucleus, beyond the extent of CO emission
Search for correlation effects in linear chains of trapped ions
We report a precise search for correlation effects in linear chains of 2 and
3 trapped Ca+ ions. Unexplained correlations in photon emission times within a
linear chain of trapped ions have been reported, which, if genuine, cast doubt
on the potential of an ion trap to realize quantum information processing. We
observe quantum jumps from the metastable 3d 2D_{5/2} level for several hours,
searching for correlations between the decay times of the different ions. We
find no evidence for correlations: the number of quantum jumps with separations
of less than 10 ms is consistent with statistics to within errors of 0.05%; the
lifetime of the metastable level derived from the data is consistent with that
derived from independent single-ion data at the level of the experimental
errors 1%; and no rank correlations between the decay times were found with
sensitivity to rank correlation coefficients at the level of |R| = 0.024.Comment: With changes to introduction. 5 pages, including 4 figures. Submitted
