    Examining links between anxiety, reinvestment and walking when talking by older adults during adaptive gait

    Falls by older adults often result in reduced quality of life and debilitating fear of further falls. Stopping walking when talking (SWWT) is a significant predictor of future falls by older adults and is thought to reflect age-related increases in attentional demands of walking. We examine whether SWWT is associated with use of explicit movement cues during locomotion, and evaluate if conscious control (i.e., movement specific reinvestment) is causally linked to falls-related anxiety during a complex walking task. We observed whether twenty-four older adults stopped walking when talking when asked a question during an adaptive gait task. After certain trials, participants completed a visual-spatial recall task regarding walkway features, or answered questions about their movements during the walk. In a subsequent experimental condition, participants completed the walking task under conditions of raised postural threat. Compared to a control group, participants who SWWT reported higher scores for aspects of reinvestment relating to conscious motor processing but not movement self-consciousness. The higher scores for conscious motor processing were preserved when scores representing cognitive function were included as a covariate. There were no group differences in measures of general cognitive function, visual spatial working memory or balance confidence. However, the SWWT group reported higher scores on a test of external awareness when walking, indicating allocation of attention away from task-relevant environmental features. Under conditions of increased threat, participants self-reported significantly greater state anxiety and reinvestment and displayed more accurate responses about their movements during the task. SWWT is not associated solely with age-related cognitive decline or generic increases in age-related attentional demands of walking. SWWT may be caused by competition for phonological resources of working memory associated with consciously processing motor actions and appears to be causally linked with fall-related anxiety and increased vigilance.This research was supported by The Royal Society (IE131576) and British Academy (SG132820)

    Effects of food on physical and sleep complaints in children with ADHD: a randomised controlled pilot study

    Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a common behavioural disorder in children, may be associated with comorbid physical and sleep complaints. Dietary intervention studies have shown convincing evidence of efficacy in reducing ADHD symptoms in children. In this pilot study, we investigated the effects of an elimination diet on physical and sleep complaints in children with ADHD. A group of 27 children (3.8–8.5 years old), who all met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition criteria for ADHD, were assigned randomly to either a diet group (15/27) or a control group (12/27). The diet group followed a 5-week elimination diet; the control group adhered to their normal diet. Parents of both groups had to keep an extended diary and had to monitor the behaviour and the physical and sleep complaints of their child conscientiously. The primary endpoint was the clinical response, i.e. a decrease of physical and sleep complaints, at the end of the trial, based on parent ratings on a Physical Complaints Questionnaire. The number of physical and sleep complaints was significantly decreased in the diet group compared to the control group (p < 0.001), with a reduction in the diet group of 77% (p < 0.001, effect size = 2.0) and in the control group of 17% (p = 0.08, effect size = 0.2). Specific complaints that were significantly reduced were in three domains: headaches or bellyaches, unusual thirst or unusual perspiration, and sleep complaints. The reduction of complaints seemed to occur independently of the behavioural changes (p = 0.1). However, the power of this comparison was low. A positive correlation existed between the reduction of physical and behavioural symptoms (p < 0.01). The reduction did not differ between children with or without an atopic constitution (p = 0.7). An elimination diet may be an effective instrument to reduce physical complaints in children with ADHD, but more research is needed to determine the effects of food on (functional) somatic symptoms in children with and without ADHD.     Forest biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services

    Forests are critical habitats for biodiversity and they are also essential for the provision of a wide range of ecosystem services that are important to human well-being. There is increasing evidence that biodiversity contributes to forest ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services. Here we provide a review of forest ecosystem services including biomass production, habitat provisioning services, pollination, seed dispersal, resistance to wind storms, fire regulation and mitigation, pest regulation of native and invading insects, carbon sequestration, and cultural ecosystem services, in relation to forest type, structure and diversity. We also consider relationships between forest biodiversity and multifunctionality, and trade-offs among ecosystem services. We compare the concepts of ecosystem processes, functions and services to clarify their definitions. Our review of published studies indicates a lack of empirical studies that establish quantitative and causal relationships between forest biodiversity and many important ecosystem services. The literature is highly skewed; studies on provisioning of nutrition and energy, and on cultural services, delivered by mixed-species forests are under-represented. Planted forests offer ample opportunity for optimising their composition and diversity because replanting after harvesting is a recurring process. Planting mixed-species forests should be given more consideration as they are likely to provide a wider range of ecosystem services within the forest and for adjacent land uses. This review also serves as the introduction to this special issue of Biodiversity and Conservation on various aspects of forest biodiversity and ecosystem services

    OBJETIVO: Verificar a relação entre vitamina A e os marcadores bioquímicos da situação nutricional do ferro. MÉTODOS: Participaram deste estudo 178 indivíduos com idade entre 7 e 17 anos, residentes na cidade de Jequié (BA). Os indivíduos foram submetidos a exame de sangue para dosagem de retinol e de marcadores bioquímicos do estado nutricional relativo ao ferro. Além disso, foram realizados exames antropométricos, parasitológico de fezes e coletadas informações de consumo dietético de ferro e das condições sócio-ambiental e domiciliar da família. Utilizou-se a análise de regressão linear múltipla como técnica estatística para avaliar a associação de interesse. RESULTADOS: Constatou-se associação positiva e estatisticamente significante entre os níveis de retinol sérico e a concentração de hemoglobina (p=0,007), ferro sérico (p=0,010) e transferrina saturada (p=0,027). Esses efeitos se mantiveram após ajuste dos modelos pelas variáveis demográficas, infecções parasitárias (Schistosoma mansoni, Trichiura trichuris, Ascaris lumbricoides e ancilostomídeos), consumo de ferro alimentar biodisponível e condições ambientais e domiciliares. CONCLUSÃO: A vitamina A parece contribuir para elevar o ferro orgânico da população, em especial, em áreas onde a deficiência de vitamina A e a anemia coexistem.<br>OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between vitamin A and the biochemical markers of iron status. METHODS: A total of 178 individuals aging from 7 to 17 years participated in this study, all living in Jequié, BA. The individuals were submitted to blood tests to dose retinol and biochemical iron markers. Furthermore, anthropometric measurements and stool analyses were done and dietary information regarding iron intake, socio-environmental and home conditions of the family were collected. Multiple linear regression analysis was done to assess the association of interest. RESULTS: A positive and statistically significant association was found between the levels of serum retinol and hemoglobin (p=0.007), serum iron (p=0.010) and iron-saturated tranferrin (p=0.027). These findings remained unchanged after adjusting the models for demographic variables, parasitic infections (Schistosoma mansoni, Trichiura trichuris, Ascaris lumbricoides and ancylostomiasis), consumption of bioavailable dietary iron and environmental and home conditions. CONCLUSION: Vitamin A seems to contribute to the increase of organic iron of the population, especially in areas were deficiency of vitamin A and iron-deficiency anemia coexist
