'To Make the Enemy Immortal by the Sheer Play on Words' – on Julian Tuwim’s Pamphlets

The article presents both the formal aspects of the poetics of Tuwim’s pamphlets (enumeration, hyperbole, grotesque, irony) and the figures of those who are the targets of his satirical addresses. Tuwim used verse satires to create polemical and ironic portraits of individual people (the main figure being a nationalist journalist and literary critic Stanisław Pieńkowski) as well as to ridicule state institutions, ideologies and political parties. The author also analyses pamphlet-like lyrical poems, columns and literary criticism by Julian Tuwim. Transgression of Postindustrial Dissonance and Excess: (Re)valuation of Gothicism in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive

The paper gives insight into the revaluation of popular Gothic aesthetics in Jim Jarmusch’s 2014 production Only Lovers Left Alive. Drawing on critical theory and the postmodern theoretical framework, the article suggests that the film transgresses contemporary culture immersed in a “culture of death” that has produced a vast amount of cultural texts under the rubric of “Gothicism.” By considering Jean Baudrillard’s concept of transaesthetics and Judith Halberstam’s writings on contemporary monstrosity, the paper shows that a commodified Gothic mode has lost its older deconstructive functions that operated on the margins of the mainstream. Now entirely focused on the duplication of the same aesthetic codes and signs, Gothic productions conform to the rules of postindustrial culture, enriching entertainment imagery with the neutralized concept of “otherness.” Hence, the article engages primarily with Jarmusch’s indie aesthetics that goes beyond easily recognizable patterns and generic conventions and allows the director to emphasize that the arts are rejuvenating forces, the antidote to a commoditized environment. Then, the focus is on the construction of main characters—Adam and Eve, ageless vampires and spouses—who thanks to nostalgic theatricality and performance reconfigure the mainstream monstrosity. Ultimately, the article emphasizes that Jarmusch’s film, to a large extent, becomes a warning against the inevitable results of advanced capitalism practiced on a global scale

In vitro analysis of urinary stone composition in dual-energy computed tomography

Purpose: Dual energy computed tomography (DECT) is a new method of computed tomography (CT) imaging, allowing the assessment of not only the object's morphology, but also its composition. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of in vitro DECT evaluation of urinary stones' chemical composition. Material and methods: Six samples of surgically removed renal stones were scanned using DECT and analyzed by scanner vendor software. Uric acid stones were marked red and calcium stones white by the software. The real composition of the stones was finally verified using physicochemical laboratory analysis. Results: In 5 out of 6 samples, the composition of stones in DECT (3 samples identified as uric acid and 2 samples as calcium) was consistent with the physicochemical analysis (3 samples identified as uric acid, 1 as calcium phosphate, 1 as calcium oxalate). In DECT it was not possible to determine more precisely the type of calcium compounds (calcium phosphate vs. calcium oxalate) as established in the physicochemical analysis. In one stone identified in physicochemical analysis as uric acid, DECT detected a composite layered structure containing both uric acid and calcium compounds. Conclusions: DECT allows uric acid to be distinguished from calcium urinary tract stones, which is crucial in the choice of appropriate therapy. Using the available hardware and software, it was not possible to more accurately distinguish types of calcified stones. Evaluation of the stone type in DECT may be limited in the case of mixed chemical composition

Development of Organic Farming in Poland After 2013 in Terms of Common Agricultural Policy

Organic farming in the European Union is still a small percentage, but there is a noticeable upward trend, albeit mainly in the countries of the old EU (EU-15). At the same time, according to Eurostat data and taking into account the average for the European Union, organic farms are larger than conventional farms, as well as the average age of organic farmers is lower. As a result, organic farming (biological, organic) as a system of permanent self-sustaining and economically sustainable safe management of plant and animal production should be an important alternative to conventional agriculture. In addition, efforts to develop organic farming create the capacity to deal with environmental, animal welfare and rural development, while producing high quality food. The aim of the paper is to provide opportunities for development of organic farming in Poland in the light of EU regulations for the years 2014–2020
