    Get PDF

Full and partial compression fatigue tests on welded specimens of steel St 52-3. Effects of the stress ratio on the probabilistic fatigue life estimation

    Get PDF
The fatigue strength of structures subjected to cyclic loading depends strongly on the stress ratio. Particularly, in case of welded steel structures this fact is not considered in the corresponding standards nor in the guidelines. Experimentally, two approaches are used to study the effect of stress ratio on the fatigue life. On the one hand, based on the - curves obtained from tests performed at different stress ratios, the fatigue life under a particular stress range is estimated. On the other hand, the stress amplitude corresponding to a constant fatigue life is estimated by applying the failure criteria for fluctuating stress like the Goodman–Haigh relationship. This paper presents a general probabilistic model, which estimates the - and Goodman–Haigh curves for any stress ratio. Afterwards, this model is applied on data obtained from full and partial cyclic compression loading tests performed on welded specimens made of steel St 52-3. The tested details correspond to the permissible notch condition limit occurred in highly stressed structures used to build ships

Design and Optimization of Magnetic Gears with Arrangement and Mechanical Constraints for Wind Turbine Applications

    No full text
International audienceThis article focuses on the design and optimization of magnetic and mechanical (structural) parts of magnetic gears for wind turbine applications. In particular, this design takes into account the structural aspects of magnetic gears as well as the system's mechanical constraints (deformation and stress). Geometric parameters have been optimized in order to minimize the material costs for a 3.9 MW, 15 rpm wind turbine. This optimization strategy includes both magnetostatic and mechanical stationary finite element analyses. Optimization results underscore the necessity to take mechanical constraints into account, especially for the fixed ferromagnetic pole pieces

    Get PDF
The results of historical researches on the design and the construction of the viaduct of Lambézellec (Brest, France) support the restoration of this structure. Plans, technical drawings and explanations taken from the large corpus (between 1891 and 1893) of the Departmental Archives service of Finistère made it possible to better understand the technical solutions that were adopted, to virtually re-build the structure in order to describe its different parts with accuracy and thus be helpful for the repairs

Authoring XML all the Time, Everywhere and by Everyone

International audienceThis article presents a framework for editing, publishing and sharing XML content directly from within the browser. It comes in two parts: XTiger XML and AXEL. XTiger XML is a document template specification language for creating document models. AXEL is a client-side Javascript library that turns the document template into a document editing application running in the browser. This framework is targeted at non XML speaking end users, since it preserves end users from XML syntax during editing. Its current implementation proposes a pseudo-WYSIWYG user interface where the document template provides a document-oriented editing metaphor, or a more form-oriented metaphor, depending on the template

    Get PDF

Nontrivial Polydispersity Exponents in Aggregation Models

We consider the scaling solutions of Smoluchowski's equation of irreversible aggregation, for a non gelling collision kernel. The scaling mass distribution f(s) diverges as s^{-tau} when s->0. tau is non trivial and could, until now, only be computed by numerical simulations. We develop here new general methods to obtain exact bounds and good approximations of Ď„\tau. For the specific kernel KdD(x,y)=(x^{1/D}+y^{1/D})^d, describing a mean-field model of particles moving in d dimensions and aggregating with conservation of ``mass'' s=R^D (R is the particle radius), perturbative and nonperturbative expansions are derived. For a general kernel, we find exact inequalities for tau and develop a variational approximation which is used to carry out the first systematic study of tau(d,D) for KdD. The agreement is excellent both with the expansions we derived and with existing numerical values. Finally, we discuss a possible application to 2d decaying turbulence.Comment: 16 pages (multicol.sty), 6 eps figures (uses epsfig), Minor corrections. Notations improved, as published in Phys. Rev.
