An unusual case of intestinal obstruction by volvulus of Meckel’s diverticulum in a 10-year-old child: a case report
Intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal haemorrhage, adherence, intussusception, acute diverticulitis and rarely malignity are the most common complications of Meckel’s diverticulum in children. Reported mechanism of intestinal obstruction in Meckel’s diverticulum include invagination, adherence and volvulus. Obstructive ileum caused by volvulus of Meckel’s diverticilum is not a very frequent medical condition. Here we describe a case of intestinal obstruction caused by volvulus of non-inflamed Meckel’s diverticulum in a 10-year-old child. Considering the potentially life-threatening obstructive ileum in cases of children with deteriorating clinical picture, surgical exploration should not be delayed
Intercostal leiomyoma in a child: review of the literature
Leiomyomas of the chest wall are very rare. In a review of the current literature twelve cases were found, of which only one concerns of an intercostal leiomyoma of the chest wall. We report a case of 1 year old male child with intercostal leiomyoma who presented with a painless rigid swelling of the right chest wall. The radiological control revealed a solid mass in the right anterior sixth intercostal space. En-bloc excision of the mass by abrading of the sixth rib through right anterior thoracotomy was performed. Histopatological analysis showed a localized intercostal leiomyoma. The patient has a close follow-up for 6 months without evidence of recurrence. This is the first case of a primary intercostal leiomyoma in a child which was excised totally without reconstruction of the chest wall

The impact of human activity on the environment, worldwide, has had irreversible negative effects on daily lives as well as on mental health. The present study aims to investigate climate change, its effects on mental health of the population and the development of strategies to address the eminent negative consequences. The methodology included literature and research data review, which were collected through Google Scholar, Pub-med online database, articles, journals and dissertations. This study makes evident that climate change affects the mental health of the population and requires further investigation and planning in order to implement appropriate information and consultation programs as well as to promote the adoption of habits and behaviours in order to address and reduce the negative environmental consequences
Endovascular management of a late saccular aortic aneurysm after end-to-end repair of coarctation
Post-coarctation surgical repair aneurysm formation is observed rarely with end-to-end anastomosis technique. The redo surgery is associated with high mortality and morbidity rate. Although the minimal invasive method with stented grafts has been reported in only small number of patients, this could represent a valid alternative treatment. We present a case of successful endovascular treatment of a patient with a late post-coarctation repair saccular aneurysm
Unusual site for iatrogenic esophageal perforation in a premature neonate
Esophageal perforation in the neonate period is uncommon and often iatrogenic in origin, requiring a prompt diagnosis in order to prevent further complications. We present a case of iatrogenic esophageal perforation in a premature neonate following orogastric tube placement. Findings on plain film radiograph were consistent with thoracic esophageal perforation. Due to the patient’s hemodynamic stability, the patient was treated nonoperatively with favorable results. We also discuss the cause, clinical clues to the diagnosis and treatment in cases with esophageal perforation
High origin of a testicular artery: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract

Introduction

Although variations in the origin of the testicular artery are not uncommon, few reports about a high origin from the abdominal aorta exist in the literature. We discuss the case of a high origin of the testicular artery, its embryology, classification systems, and its clinical significance.

Case presentation

We report a very rare case of high origin of the left testicular artery in a 68-year-old Caucasian male cadaver. The artery originated from the anterolateral aspect of the abdominal aorta, 2 cm cranially to the ipsilateral renal artery. Approximately 1 cm after its origin, it branched off into the inferior suprarenal artery. During its course, the artery crossed anterior to the left renal artery.

Conclusions

A knowledge of the variant origin of the testicular artery is important during renal and testicular surgery. The origin and course must be carefully identified in order to preserve normal blood circulation and prevent testicular atrophy. A reduction in gonadal blood flow may lead to varicocele under circumstances. A knowledge of this variant anatomy may be of interest to radiologists and helpful in avoiding diagnostic errors.</p
The participation of the pancreas in blunt abdominal trauma in childhood
The present study refers on eighteen children with acute post-traumatic pancreatitis and post-traumatic pseudocysts. These patients were treated with conservatively and surgical management in the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki during 1982-1998.Five children out of 18 were treated with acute post-traumatic pancreatitis and thirteen children with post-traumatic pseudocysts. The embryology, the surgical anatomy and physiology of the pancreas are reviewed, while are presented in detail the diagnostic procedure and the therapeutic approach of these children. The treatment with surgical methods of pancreatic trauma and pancreatic pseudocysts are described and the conservative method of management in one group of children with acute post-traumatic pancreatitis. The results and complications of the two groups of patients are compiled and pertinent conclusions are stated.H Acute Appendicitis Following COVID-19 Infection in Pediatric Patients: A Single Center’s Study in Greece
Purpose: This study investigated the potential association between the previous severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive infection, as well as vaccination, and the presentation of acute appendicitis in pediatric patients. It has been three years since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and city lockdowns and self-protective measures have been applied worldwide. In an effort to contribute to the research on the probable long-term complications of the COVID-19 infection as well as the vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, the current study was designed and investigated patients’ health records in the post-quarantine era. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients admitted and treated surgically for acute appendicitis from January 2022 to June 2022 was conducted. Demographic and personal data, as well as the COVID-19 infection history of each child, were recorded. The patients who were negative for a previous COVID-19 infection were excluded. For the rest of the sample, the time-to-onset of acute appendicitis, the severity of appendicitis (complicated or uncomplicated), and the vaccination status of the patients were examined. Regarding the time-to-onset of appendicitis, we divided the patients into three groups: group A with a time-to-onset 6 months. Statistical analysis followed and was considered significant if p p p > 0.05). The majority of the children (92%) had not received a COVID-19 vaccination. For the vaccinated children, the relative risk for complicated appendicitis was equal to 1.5 (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrate a potential positive relationship between COVID-19 infection and subsequent acute appendicitis in pediatric patients. There are also some speculations on the presentation of complicated cases of appendicitis following COVID-19 infection or vaccination, but these need to be further proven. Further data are required to better understand this potential complication of COVID-19 infection as well as the role of vaccines in the current post-vaccine era
