    Particle and particle pair dispersion in turbulence modeled with spatially and temporally correlated stochastic processes

    In this paper we present a new model for modeling the diffusion and relative dispersion of particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We use an Heisenberg-like Hamiltonian to incorporate spatial correlations between fluid particles, which are modeled by stochastic processes correlated in time. We are able to reproduce the ballistic regime in the mean squared displacement of single particles and the transition to a normal diffusion regime for long times. For the dispersion of particle pairs we find a t2t^{2}-dependence of the mean squared separation at short times and a tt-dependence for long ones. For intermediate times indications for a Richardson t3t^{3} law are observed in certain situations.     Fault Tolerance Middleware for a Multi-Core System

    Fault Tolerance Middleware (FTM) provides a framework to run on a dedicated core of a multi-core system and handles detection of single-event upsets (SEUs), and the responses to those SEUs, occurring in an application running on multiple cores of the processor. This software was written expressly for a multi-core system and can support different kinds of fault strategies, such as introspection, algorithm-based fault tolerance (ABFT), and triple modular redundancy (TMR). It focuses on providing fault tolerance for the application code, and represents the first step in a plan to eventually include fault tolerance in message passing and the FTM itself. In the multi-core system, the FTM resides on a single, dedicated core, separate from the cores used by the application. This is done in order to isolate the FTM from application faults and to allow it to swap out any application core for a substitute. The structure of the FTM consists of an interface to a fault tolerant strategy module, a responder module, a fault manager module, an error factory, and an error mapper that determines the severity of the error. In the present reference implementation, the only fault tolerant strategy implemented is introspection. The introspection code waits for an application node to send an error notification to it. It then uses the error factory to create an error object, and at this time, a severity level is assigned to the error. The introspection code uses its built-in knowledge base to generate a recommended response to the error. Responses might include ignoring the error, logging it, rolling back the application to a previously saved checkpoint, swapping in a new node to replace a bad one, or restarting the application. The original error and recommended response are passed to the top-level fault manager module, which invokes the response. The responder module also notifies the introspection module of the generated response. This provides additional information to the introspection module that it can use in generating its next response. For example, if the responder triggers an application rollback and errors are still occurring, the introspection module may decide to recommend an application restart

    Investigation of the efficacy of a genetically-stabile live Salmonella typhimurium vaccine for use in swine

    Hybrid swine were immunized twice at an interval of 3 weeks to evaluate the efficacy of a liveS. typhimurium vaccine. The animals and a control group were challenged at the age of 8-10 weeks by oral test infection with a labelled S. typhimurium DT l 04 strain. An ELISA was used to establish the presence of antibodies to S. typhimurium in serum samples. The presence of the challenge strain in the ileal and caecal mucosa and in the ileocolic lymph nodes was investigated quantitatively using the Koch plating method. The vaccinated animals had significantly higher antibody titres after the second vaccination than the unvaccinated animals. The vaccinated animals had a significantly lower (p \u3c 0.05) colonization of the ileal and caecal mucosa as well as the ileocolic lymph nodes than the unvaccinated animals

    Immunoprophylaxis as a method to help reduce the incidence of Salmonella infection in swine

    Swine reared for fattening which were clinically proven to have salmonellosis (S. typhimuriwn) were immunized with a S. typhimurium live vaccine to prevent clinical disease and reduce the level of infection amongst the swine. To assess the outcome of vaccination the ileocaecal lymph nodes of the swine were removed at the time of slaughter and cultures set up to establish the presence of salmonella. In addition, serum samples were taken and assayed for antibodies to S. typhimurium. Use of the vaccine prevented animals from developing clinical disease and resulted in a marked reduction in the isolation of S. typhimurium from the ileocaecal lymph nodes of the swine at slaughter and in the number of animals with high antibody value (≥40 OD%)

    Transcellular diapedesis is initiated by invasive podosomes

    Producción CientíficaDiapedesis is critical for immune system function and inflammatory responses. This occurs by migration of blood leukocytes either directly through individual microvascular endothelial cells (the “transcellular” route) or between them (the “paracellular” route). Mechanisms for transcellular pore formation in endothelium remain unknown. Here we demonstrate that lymphocytes used podosomes and extended “invasive podosomes” to palpate the surface of, and ultimately form transcellular pores through, the endothelium. In lymphocytes, these structures were dependent on Src kinase and the actin regulatory protein WASP; inhibition of podosome formation selectively blocked the transcellular route of diapedesis. In endothelium, membrane fusion events dependent on the SNARE-containing membrane fusion complex and intracellular calcium were required for efficient transcellular pore formation in response to podosomes. These findings provide insights into basic mechanisms for leukocyte trafficking and the functions of podosomes

    Chemical and structural characterization of the native oxide scale on a Mg-based alloy

    In this study, the structure and composition of the native oxide forming on the basal plane (0001) of Mg-2Al-0.1Ca is investigated by a correlative approach, combining scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and atom probe tomography (APT). Atom probe specimens were prepared conventionally in a Ga focused ion beam (FIB) as well as a Xe plasma FIB in a cryogenic setup and subsequently cleaned in the atom probe to remove surface contamination before oxidation. While thermal energy input from the laser and longer atmospheric exposure time increased the measured hydrogen content in the specimen's apex region, cryo preparation revealed, that the hydrogen uptake in magnesium is independent of the employment of conventional or cryogenic FIB preparation. TEM measurements demonstrated the growth of a (111) MgO oxide layer with 3-4 nm thickness on the basal (0001) plane of the Mg atom probe specimen. APT data further revealed the formation of an aluminum-rich region between bulk Mg and the native oxide. The aluminum enrichment of up to ~20 at.% at the interface is consistent with an inward growth of the oxide scale

    Observation of precursorlike behavior of femtosecond pulses in a dye with a strong absorption band

    Journals published by the American Physical Society can be found at http://publish.aps.org/Recent interest in Sommerfeld-Brillouin optical precursors has brought attention to the possibility of optical precursor observation in bulk matter. We investigate the possible formation of optical precursors in an organic dye solution with a sharp absorption band and anomalous dispersion at a wavelength of approximately 800 nm. We explore this regime experimentally with sub-10-fs pulses with a central wavelength of approximately 800 nm from a Ti : sapphire oscillator. The pulses are passed through a thin layer of the dye solution and characterized by interferometric autocorrelation. The obtained autocorrelation traces are compared with simulations, and we observe important dispersion effects on the shape of the propagated pulses, including precursorlike behavior in their time evolution

    Spatial distribution of transcript changes in the maize primary root elongation zone at low water potential

    Background: Previous work showed that the maize primary root adapts to low Ψw (-1.6 MPa) by maintaining longitudinal expansion in the apical 3 mm (region 1), whereas in the adjacent 4 mm (region 2) longitudinal expansion reaches a maximum in well-watered roots but is progressively inhibited at low Ψw. To identify mechanisms that determine these responses to low Ψw, transcript expression was profiled in these regions of water-stressed and well-watered roots. In addition, comparison between region 2 of water-stressed roots and the zone of growth deceleration in well-watered roots (region 3) distinguished stress-responsive genes in region 2 from those involved in cell maturation. Results: Responses of gene expression to water stress in regions 1 and 2 were largely distinct. The largest functional categories of differentially expressed transcripts were reactive oxygen species and carbon metabolism in region 1, and membrane transport in region 2. Transcripts controlling sucrose hydrolysis distinguished well-watered and water-stressed states (invertase vs. sucrose synthase), and changes in expression of transcripts for starch synthesis indicated further alteration in carbon metabolism under water deficit. A role for inositols in the stress response was suggested, as was control of proline metabolism. Increased expression of transcripts for wall-loosening proteins in region 1, and for elements of ABA and ethylene signaling were also indicated in the response to water deficit. Conclusion: The analysis indicates that fundamentally different signaling and metabolic response mechanisms are involved in the response to water stress in different regions of the maize primary root elongation zone

    Neurocognitive function in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing pulmonary vein isolation

    BackgroundAtrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with cognitive dysfunction. However, neurocognitive function in AF patients undergoing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) has not been well studied. The aim of this analysis is to compare neurocognitive function in patients who did or did not undergo PVI.Materials and methodsWe used data from the Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Cohort study (Swiss-AF), a prospective, observational, multicenter study in Switzerland. Patients with documented AF were enrolled and data of 1,576 patients without history of PVI and with complete information on PVI status and neurocognitive function were used. Information on PVI was collected at baseline and during 1 year of follow-up. Neurocognitive testing was performed at baseline and after 1 year of follow-up, using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), trail making test (TMT) A and B, digit symbol substitution test (DSST) and semantic fluency test (SFT). To investigate the association of PVI with neurocognitive function, we use propensity score matching (1:3) and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW).ResultsThe mean age of this population was 74 ± 8 years, 27.1% were women. Overall, 88 (5.5%) patients underwent PVI during 1 year of follow-up. Using ITPW (n = 1576), PVI was weakly associated with the MoCA score after adjusting for time since PVI, baseline MoCA score and other covariates (β (95%CI) 1.19 (0.05; 2.32), p = 0.04). In the propensity matched comparison (n = 352), there was no significant association between PVI and the MoCA score (β (95%CI) 1.04 (−0.19; 2.28), p = 0.1). There were no significant associations between PVI and cognitive function when using the TMT A and B, DSST or SFT independent of the method used.ConclusionIn this population of AF patients, there was no consistent evidence of an association between PVI and neurocognitive function.Clinical trial registration[https://clinicaltrials.gov/], identifier [NCT02105844]

    Babesiosis in Southeastern, Central and Northeastern Europe: An Emerging and Re-Emerging Tick-Borne Disease of Humans and Animals

    There is now considerable evidence that in Europe, babesiosis is an emerging infectious disease, with some of the causative species spreading as a consequence of the increasing range of their tick vector hosts. In this review, we summarize both the historic records and recent findings on the occurrence and incidence of babesiosis in 20 European countries located in southeastern Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia), central Europe (Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland), and northern and northeastern Europe (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway), identified in humans and selected species of domesticated animals (cats, dogs, horses, and cattle). Recorded cases of human babesiosis are still rare, but their number is expected to rise in the coming years. This is because of the widespread and longer seasonal activity of Ixodes ricinus as a result of climate change and because of the more extensive use of better molecular diagnostic methods. Bovine babesiosis has a re-emerging potential because of the likely loss of herd immunity, while canine babesiosis is rapidly expanding in central and northeastern Europe, its occurrence correlating with the rapid, successful expansion of the ornate dog tick (Dermacentor reticulatus) populations in Europe. Taken together, our analysis of the available reports shows clear evidence of an increasing annual incidence of babesiosis across Europe in both humans and animals that is changing in line with similar increases in the incidence of other tick-borne diseases. This situation is of major concern, and we recommend more extensive and frequent, standardized monitoring using a “One Health” approach
