Mapping the information-coping trajectory of young people coping with long term illness: An evidence based approach

    Get PDF
Purpose - Purpose: We explore the relationship between information and coping information from the experiences of young people coping with long term illness. Design/methodology/approach - Methodology: Situational Analysis was used as a methodological approach. It has roots in the Chicago Symbolic Interactionism School. Cartographic approaches enabled the analysis, mapping the complexities emerging from the data. Findings - Findings: As the young people became more informed about their health conditions, and gained knowledge and understanding both about their illnesses, their own bodies and boundaries, their confidence and capacity to cope increased. Gaining confidence, the young people often wanted to share their knowledge becoming information providers themselves. From the data we identified five positions on an information-coping trajectory (1) Information deficiency (2) Feeling ill-informed (3) Needing an injection of information (4) Having information health and (5) Becoming an information donor. Research limitations/implications - Research limitations/implications: The research was limited to an analysis of thirty narratives. The research contributes to information theory by mapping clearly the relationship between information and coping. Originality/value - Originality/value: The information theories in this study have originality and multi-disciplinary value in the management of health and illness, and information studies

Partial Isometries of a Sub-Riemannian Manifold

In this paper, we obtain the following generalisation of isometric C1C^1-immersion theorem of Nash and Kuiper. Let MM be a smooth manifold of dimension mm and HH a rank kk subbundle of the tangent bundle TMTM with a Riemannian metric gHg_H. Then the pair (H,gH)(H,g_H) defines a sub-Riemannian structure on MM. We call a C1C^1-map f:(M,H,gH)(N,h)f:(M,H,g_H)\to (N,h) into a Riemannian manifold (N,h)(N,h) a {\em partial isometry} if the derivative map dfdf restricted to HH is isometric; in other words, fhH=gHf^*h|_H=g_H. The main result states that if dimN>k\dim N>k then a smooth HH-immersion f0:MNf_0:M\to N satisfying fhH<gHf^*h|_H<g_H can be homotoped to a partial isometry f:(M,gH)(N,h)f:(M,g_H)\to (N,h) which is C0C^0-close to f0f_0. In particular we prove that every sub-Riemannian manifold (M,H,gH)(M,H,g_H) admits a partial isometry in Rn\R^n provided nm+kn\geq m+k.Comment: 13 pages. Martial Arts Interventions for Inclusion and Wellness: A Case of Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

    Get PDF
Martial arts are a Broad set of Activities that Offer the Opportunity to Engage in a Physical Activity that can Produce a Range of Benefits for Young People. The Broad Nature of Martial arts also Brings Merits to Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) as they have an Opportunity to Engage Better in more Activities and are not Limited to just Traditional Physical Activity Offered in Their Educational Settings. This Paper Draws on the Literature to show how Martial arts is Linked to Leisure Research and how it also fits into the Realm of Wellness Benefits for Young Children on SEND. The Paper Highlights the Potential Benefits of Martial arts Interventions and Discusses its Usefulness in Promoting Inclusion. The Preliminary Findings from a Pilot Study Suggest that SEND Children do Indicate some Changes in Their Behaviours through the Martial arts Interventions. Reduced Scores were Observed in Areas around those that might Cause Anxiety, Anger and Frustration, whilst Excitement and Calmness was Improved. The Reactions of Carers and Teaching Assistants Displayed Improvements in Anxiety and Positive Behaviours

High resolution fourier domain optical coherence tomography at 2 microns for painted objects

    Get PDF
Optical Coherence Tomography has been successfully applied to the non-invasive imaging of subsurface microstructure of a variety of materials from biological tissues to painted objects of art. One of the limitations of the technique is the low depth of penetration due to the strong scattering and absorption in the material. Previous studies found that for paint materials, the optimum window for large depth of penetration is around 2.2 microns. This is also true for many other materials with low water content. We have previously demonstrated OCT systems in this wavelength regime for imaging with improved depth of penetration. In this paper, we present an improved 2 micron high resolution Fourier domain OCT system using a broadband supercontinuum source. The system achieved a depth resolution of 9 microns in air (or 6 microns in paint or any polymer)

Joint modeling of primary and secondary action in DBM

    Get PDF
In this paper we discuss the issue of primary and secondary actions to direct mail offers. Primary action refers to the first responses consumers make toward a direct offer or soliciation. It might represent an order for a product, a request for a catalog or credit card, or a pledge to donate to a charity. As little money changes hands on primary actions, companies are also interested in secondary actions, i.e., bad debts, returns, or payments. A company concentrating solely on the prediction of primary actions might lose money on customers who do not ultimately pay. We present a model which jointly models primary and secondary action and incorporates the correlation between the two action probabilities. We also show how optimal selection should take place incorporating predicted primary and secondary action jointly. In an empirical study, the new joint model yields superior profits when compared to a split model assuming the independence of primary and secondary actions.
