How to Identify and Instill Qualities of a Transformative Leader:

    Get PDF
This review investigates the psychological foundations of leadership theories to discover what skills enable effective leaders to lead across sectors and decades with a focus on organizational leadership. The research questions explore the ability of these leaders to consistently address conflict and challenges effectively regardless of context (public/private); and to explore the notion that such leaders are not necessarily born, and that these leadership practices can be developed. With a focus on the transformational, authentic, academic, social entrepreneur, and cross-organizational leadership theoretical models, the undergirding to these theories is explored through the influences of personality characteristics and traits, as well as the moral and ethical components involved in the development of these leaders. Three prominent community leaders are profiled to demonstrate how aspects of personality and experiences provide the how and why behind these leadership theories when applied to actual circumstances

This article was published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise [© Elsevier Ltd]. The definitive version is available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.psychsport.2011.06.005Objective: The purpose of this study was to synthesize findings from motivational climate interventions employing Ames (1992a, 1992b) and Epstein’s (1988, 1989) TARGET framework within school-based physical education contexts. Design: The present study employed a quantitative research synthesis design. Meta-analysis uses empirical studies to summarize past research by drawing overall conclusions from separate investigations. This research design highlights important and unsolved issues related to motivational climate interventions within physical education. Methods: Standard meta-analytic procedures incorporating inclusion and exclusion criteria, literature search, coding procedures, and statistical methods were used to identify and synthesize 22 studies with 24 independent samples. Cohen’s (1988) criteria for effect sizes were used to interpret and evaluate results. Results: There was an overall small positive treatment effect (g ÂŒ 0.103) for groups exposed to mastery motivational climates. Outcome analyses identified the most consistent and largest overall treatment effects for behavioral outcomes (g ÂŒ 0.39e0.49) followed by affective outcomes (gÂŒ 0.27 to 0.59) and cognitive outcomes (gÂŒ 0.25 to 0.32). Moderator analyses were directed by study heterogeneity and identified several trends in intervention features and study features with the most substantial trend for participant features as elementary students had the largest overall treatment effect (gÂŒ 0.41). Conclusions: Outcome and moderator analyses identified several trends in methodological features, participant features, and study features that should be addressed in future physical education motivational climate interventions

Ecosystem services bundles:challenges and opportunities for implementation and further research

Background : the concept of ‘ecosystem services bundles’, i.e. ecosystem services that repeatedly appear together across space and/or time, has been developed and refined as part of an integrated approach to assess interactions between ecosystem services. Nevertheless, published evidence of actual use of bundles in decision-making is lacking. In the light of this gap, a review of what bundle approaches have shown and what they can bring to decision-making is timely. Method : we conducted two separate systematic reviews. The first one addressed emerging issues within what we identify as the diverse utilisation and definition of the concept of ‘bundle’ in the literature. The second one focused on papers dealing with bundles as sets of consistently associated services. Review Synthesis : the review first highlights that the confusion surrounding the term ‘bundle’ in ecosystem services literature threatens to weaken the potential for analysis of bundles to inform decision-making. Then, thanks to the review of peer-reviewed papers that detect bundles as sets of consistently associated services, we analyse the diversity of methodological choices and we detail the interactions observed between different ecosystem services across the literature. We also show that landscape features, socio-economic conditions and institutional factors are all potential drivers for the occurrence of specific bundles in a landscape. Discussion : overall, it appears that the analysis of bundles provides an opportunity to enhance policy effectiveness. Nevertheless, the methodological challenges linked to the identification and interpretation of bundles call for careful and reflective study designs. We anticipate that this review will lead to a better understanding by scientists and practitioners of the potential for bundle studies to inform decision-making

Correction of Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation Using Image-Based Surgical Planning

    Get PDF
The objectives of this study were to develop an image-based surgical planning framework that 1) allows for in-depth analysis of pre-operative hemodynamics by the use of cardiac magnetic resonance and 2) enables surgeons to determine the optimum surgical scenarios before the operation. This framework is tailored for applications in which post-operative hemodynamics are important. In particular, it is exemplified here for a Fontan patient with severe left pulmonary arteriovenous malformations due to abnormal hepatic flow distribution to the lungs. Patients first undergo cardiac magnetic resonance for 3-dimensional anatomy and flow reconstruction. After analysis of the pre-operative flow fields, the 3-dimensional anatomy is imported into an interactive surgical planning interface for the surgeon to virtually perform multiple surgical scenarios. Associated hemodynamics are predicted by the use of a fully validated computational fluid dynamic solver. Finally, efficiency metrics (e.g., pressure decrease and hepatic flow distribution) are weighted against surgical feasibility to determine the optimal surgical option

Chronic hypoxemia increases myocardial cytochrome oxidase

ObjectiveCyanotic patients have potentially decreased tissue oxygen tension. Cytochrome oxidase catalyzes the reduction of oxygen and is integral to adenosine triphosphate production. Cytochrome oxidase subunit I, the active site, is encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Using a newborn swine model of chronic hypoxemia, we evaluated ventricular cytochrome oxidase subunit I mRNA and protein expression and assessed cytochrome oxidase activity.MethodsThirty-two newborn piglets underwent thoracotomy and placement of a pulmonary artery–to–left atrium shunt or sham operation. Two weeks later, partial pressure of arterial oxygen, hematocrit, and left ventricular shortening fraction values were compared with baseline values. Northern blot hybridization and protein immunoblotting for ventricular cytochrome oxidase subunit I were performed. Cytochrome oxidase kinetic activity was measured. Heme a,a3 content and turnover number were determined. Significance was assessed with a t test.ResultsBaseline partial pressure of arterial oxygen and hematocrit values were similar. Hypoxemic piglets had a lower partial pressure of arterial oxygen of 38 ± 10 mm Hg (P < .001) and higher hematocrit value of 31.4% ± 2.9% (P < .001) compared with a partial pressure of arterial oxygen of 140 ± 47 mm Hg and hematocrit value of 24.6% ± 3.9% after the sham operation. Baseline and postprocedure left ventricular shortening fraction were similar within and between groups. Chronic hypoxemia increased right ventricular and left ventricular cytochrome oxidase I mRNA and protein by more than 1.4-fold. Cytochrome oxidase activity increased significantly in hypoxemia by 2.5-fold compared with that seen after the sham operation. Heme a,a3 content and turnover number increased by 1.5-fold during hypoxemia.ConclusionsChronic hypoxemia increases cytochrome oxidase I message, protein expression, and activity. The increase in kinetics was due to increased enzyme content and catalytic activity. This is a possible adaptive mechanism that might preserve organ function during chronic hypoxemia

Perfectionism and achievement goals in young Finnish ice-hockey players aspiring to make the Under-16 national team

Research on perfectionism suggests that is it useful to differentiate between perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. Regarding the 2 x 2 achievement goal framework, the usefulness of this differentiation was recently demonstrated in a study with university student athletes (Stoeber, Stoll, Pescheck, & Otto, 2008, Study 2), in which it was found that perfectionistic strivings were associated with mastery-approach and performance-approach goals and perfectionistic concerns with mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals. Because the study was largely exploratory and only used non-elite athletes, the aim of the present research was to replicate and extend these findings by investigating a sample of 138 young, elite ice-hockey players, while adding further measures of perfectionism and using structural equation modelling (SEM) to confirm the relationships between perfectionistic strivings, perfectionistic concerns, and the 2 x 2 achievement goals. The SEM results showed that, in elite athletes also, perfectionistic strivings are associated with mastery-approach and performance-approach goals, whereas perfectionistic concerns are associated with masteryavoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals. Our findings corroborate the importance of differentiating between perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns when studying perfectionism in sports, because only perfectionistic concerns (and not perfectionistic strivings) are associated with maladaptive patterns of achievement goals
