Integrating Optical Wireless Communication Into an Optical Bifocal Metrology for Aerospace

    Get PDF
Recently an innovative bifocal optical metrology method was proposed for space applications (e.g., rendez-vous and docking), based on unmodulated white LEDs. Here we design, realize, and test a solution that upgrades the metrology to include a digital communication feature, with no modification of the optical elements of the original system: indeed, the scheme exploits the same optical sources that are needed for metrology, which are now also working as optical antennas as their intensity is now modulated. At the receiver side, the conventional camera is now sided by a common photodiode. The system provides unidirectional data communication at 10 kbit/s speed. It is designed to support manoeuvres up to 400 m distance. The lab tests confirm the effectiveness of the proposed solutions, showing correct data transfer without any noticeable degradation of the metrology system

The Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector Software for the VST

    Get PDF
The effects of atmospheric differential refraction on astrophysical measurements are well known. In particular, as a ray of light passes through the atmosphere, its direction is altered by the effects of atmospheric refraction. The amount of this effect depends basically on the variation of the refractive index along the path of the ray. The real accuracy needed in the atmosphere model and in the calculation of the correction to be applied is of course, considerably worse, especially at large zenith angles. On the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) the use of an Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector (ADC) is foreseen at a wide zenith distance range. This paper describes the software design and implementation aspects regarding the analytical correction law discovered to correct the refraction effect during observations with VST

Open fracture-dislocation of the knee associated with nonunion of the medial femoral condyle and chronic tendon pa-tellar rupture

    Get PDF
Background and aim of work: The incidence of coronal fractures of the femoral condyle, Hoffa frac-tures, ranges from 8.7% to 13% of all fractures of the distal femur and are often observed in polytraumas. Hoffa fractures may be misdiagnosed and consequently not properly treated. Reduction and synthesis of this type of fracture should be achieved to avoid complications such as nonunion, pain, functional impairment. The authors present a case of a 5 year old nonunion of a Hoffa fracture of the medial condyle with chronic patellar tendon rupture. Methods: Revision surgery consisted of reduction and fixation of the Hoffa fracture with screws associated with bone grafting from the iliac crest. Distalization of the patella by Z-plasty and reconstruction of the patellar tendon with Achille’s allograft were also performed. Results: Clinical evaluation after 10 months following the end of the treatment showed a complete resolution of pain, almost complete range of motion, good strength and almost complete functionality of the operated limb. Conclusions: Mistakes in the diagnosis or treatment of Hoffa fracture can often result nonunion, functional impairment, and per-sistent pain. To avoid these, the senior authors of this text believe that the correct treatment of acute Hoffa fracture and its potential associated injuries are crucial, according to the concept of early damage control and later synthesis with soft tissue reconstruction. Parameterization Models for Traceable Characterization of Planar CPW SOL Calibration Standards

    Get PDF
International audienceMethods for traceable characterization and uncertainty evaluation of planar 1-port CPW short-open-load (SOL) devices are developed. The agreement of modelling and verification measurement results greatly supports the application of the proposed parameterization models and used FEM-based EM modelling of CPW structures for traceable characterization of planar CPW-based SOL devices in the frequency range between a few kHz up to 50 GHz

Transposable element activation promotes neurodegeneration in a Drosophila model of Huntington's disease

    Get PDF
Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant disorder with progressive motor dysfunction and cognitive decline. The disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the IT15 gene, which elongates a polyglutamine stretch of the HD protein, Huntingtin. No therapeutic treatments are available, and new pharmacological targets are needed. Retrotransposons are transposable elements (TEs) that represent 40% and 30% of the human and Drosophila genomes and replicate through an RNA intermediate. Mounting evidence suggests that mammalian TEs are active during neurogenesis and may be involved in diseases of the nervous system. Here we show that TE expression and mobilization are increased in a Drosophila melanogaster HD model. By inhibiting TE mobilization with Reverse Transcriptase inhibitors, polyQ-dependent eye neurodegeneration and genome instability in larval brains are rescued and fly lifespan is increased. These results suggest that TE activation may be involved in polyQ-induced neurotoxicity and a potential pharmacological target

Analysis of Risk Factors of Oral Cancer and Periodontitis from a Sex- and Gender-Related Perspective: Gender Dentistry

    Get PDF
Gender-specific medicine studies how sexual biology and gender-related cultural and behavioral differences may influence a person's health and considers the differences in clinical features, prevention, therapies, prognosis, and psycho-social aspects of diseases with different impacts on women and men. The present work summarizes the main differential impact each risk factor for oral cancer and periodontitis has according to biological sex- and gender-oriented differences. It resulted in differences in epidemiology and the weight of various healthy determinants that may influence the incidence and prognosis of oral cancer and periodontitis. It is desirable to change the methodology of scientific studies with a higher focus on the weight that sexual variables may have on the well-being or the probability of getting ill of each person, thus promoting the development and diffusion of personalized gender dentistry
