Environmental changes and violent conflict
This letter reviews the scientific literature on whether and how environmental changes affect the risk of violent conflict. The available evidence from qualitative case studies indicates that environmental stress can contribute to violent conflict in some specific cases. Results from quantitative large-N studies, however, strongly suggest that we should be careful in drawing general conclusions. Those large-N studies that we regard as the most sophisticated ones obtain results that are not robust to alternative model specifications and, thus, have been debated. This suggests that environmental changes may, under specific circumstances, increase the risk of violent conflict, but not necessarily in a systematic way and unconditionally. Hence there is, to date, no scientific consensus on the impact of environmental changes on violent conflict. This letter also highlights the most important challenges for further research on the subject. One of the key issues is that the effects of environmental changes on violent conflict are likely to be contingent on a set of economic and political conditions that determine adaptation capacity. In the authors' view, the most important indirect effects are likely to lead from environmental changes via economic performance and migration to violent conflict. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd
Electron Loss from 1.4-MeV / u U\u3csup\u3e4,6,10+\u3c/sup\u3e Ions Colliding with Ne, N₂, and Ar Targets
Absolute, total, single- and multiple-electron-loss cross sections are measured for 1.4-MeV / u U4,6,10+ ions colliding with neon and argon atoms and nitrogen molecules. It is found that the cross sections all have the same dependence on the number of electrons lost and that multiplying the cross sections by the initial number of electrons in the 6s, 6p, and 5f shells yields good agreement between the different projectiles. By combining the present data with previous measurements made at the same velocity, it is shown that the scaled cross sections slowly decrease in magnitude for incoming charge states between 1 and 10, whereas the cross sections for higher-charge-state ions fall off much more rapidly
On Hardware Implementation of Tang-Maitra Boolean Functions
In this paper, we investigate the hardware circuit complexity of the class of Boolean functions recently introduced by Tang and Maitra (IEEE-TIT 64(1): 393 402, 2018). While this class of functions has very good cryptographic properties, the exact hardware requirement is an immediate concern as noted in the paper itself. In this direction, we consider different circuit architectures based on finite field arithmetic and Boolean optimization. An estimation of the circuit complexity is provided for such functions given any input size n. We study different candidate architectures for implementing these functions, all based on the finite field arithmetic. We also show different implementations for both ASIC and FPGA, providing further analysis on the practical aspects of the functions in question and the relation between these implementations and the theoretical bound. The practical results show that the Tang-Maitra functions are quite competitive in terms of area, while still maintaining an acceptable level of throughput performance for both ASIC and FPGA implementations
Polyimide hollow fiber membranes for CO2 separation from wet gas mixtures
Matrimid®5218 hollow fiber membranes were prepared using the dry-wet spinning process. The transport properties were measured with pure gases (H2, CO2, N2, CH4 and O2) and with a mixture (30% CO2 and 70% N2) in dry and wet conditions at 25 ºC, 50 ºC, 60 ºC and 75 ºC and up to 600 kPa. Interesting values of single gas selectivity up to 60 ºC (between 31 and 28 for CO2/N2 and between 33 and 30 for CO2/CH4) in dry condition were obtained. The separation factor measured for the mixture was 20% lower compared to the single gas selectivity, in the whole temperature range analyzed. In saturation conditions the data showed that water influences the performance of the membranes, inducing a reduction of the permeance of all gases. Moreover, the presence of water caused a decrease of single gas selectivity and separation factor, although not so significant, highlighting the very high water resistance of hollow fiber membrane modules
The politics and aesthetics of commemoration: national days in southern Africa
The contributions to the special section in this issue study recent independence celebrations and other national days in South
Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They explore the role of national days in
state-making and nation-building, and examine the performativity of nationalism and the role of performances in national
festivities. Placing the case studies in a broader, comparative perspective, the introduction first discusses the role of the state in
national celebrations, highlighting three themes: firstly, the political power-play and contested politics of memory involved in
the creation of a country’s festive calendar; secondly, the relationship between state control of national days and civic or
popular participation or contestation; and thirdly, the complex relationship between regional and ethnic loyalties and national
identifications. It then turns to the role of performance and aesthetics in the making of nations in general, and in national
celebrations in particular. Finally, we look at the different formats and meanings of national days in the region and address the
question whether there is anything specific about national days in southern Africa as compared to other parts of the continent

Phenolic and furanic compounds of Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak wood chips
Botanical species used on aging process must
be wisely and judiciously chosen, and for this selection, a
basic knowledge of the chemical composition of woods is
warranted. Aiming to contribute to extend the knowledge
of the chemical composition of several wood species useful
for enological purposes, we have focused our studies on
Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese
oak chips. The profile of low molecular weight phenolic
composition of these chips was achieved, using an optimized
extraction method based on pressurized liquid
extraction, followed by the quantification of phenolic acids,
phenolic aldehydes and furanic derivatives by high-performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD). The
identification of those compounds was also confirmed by
LC-DAD/ESI-MS. This study allowed the determination of
the low molecular phenolic composition of Portuguese
chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak wood.
According to our results, the influence of the botanical
species seems to be more relevant than the geographic
origin of the wood species
Aerodynamic Optimisation of Non-planar Lifting Surfaces
A novel population structured genetic algorithm (sGA) with embedded potential flow
vortex ring panel method (VRM) has been developed to minimise induced and parasitic
drag subject to constraints on lift, root bending moment, and longitudinal static stability.
The optimisation architecture can activate up to four independent wing segments allowing
up to 28 design variables. Minimum drag of wing tip extensions and winglet configurations
are compared using the non-linear stochastic optimisation method. The optimiser identified
joined box wings as offering the greatest induced efficiency followed by C-wings. With span
and root bending moment constraints winglets offered best total drag reduction. C-wings
are further investigated for potential to enhance longitudinal static stability performance
by staggering the horizontal extension of the winglet to balance moments around the wing’s
centre of gravity. Preliminary results suggest that while longitudinal static stability can be
reached it would be very poor. Inclusion of more design constraints and additional analysis
of the structural dynamics of C-wings, especially effecting the torsional mode, is necessary

Open-system orchestration as a relational source of sensing capabilities: Evidence from a venture association
Research on innovation networks has highlighted the pivotal role that actors with more prominence and power, such as hub firms, may play in orchestrating the activities of other network members along a collective innovation effort. Our study examined the undertheorized, but no less important, type of orchestration that characterizes other organizations, such as business incubators and venture associations, who seek to support the dispersed entrepreneurial efforts of network members. We refer to this type as ‘open-system’ orchestration, as opposed to the commonly studied ‘closed-system’ type performed by hub firms. Our findings reveal how the processes of open-system orchestration differ markedly from those of closed-system orchestration, and detail how these processes influence the micro-foundations of network members’ sensing capabilities. By doing so, we also offer empirical substantiation and theoretical elaboration to the idea that dynamic capabilities might not reside exclusively inside firms, but could be co-created relationally with other parties in the business ecosystem
The development and preliminary psychometric properties of two positive psychology outcome measures for people with dementia: the PPOM and the EID-Q.
Background:
Positive psychology research in dementia care has largely been confined to the qualitative literature because of the lack of robust outcome measures. The aim of this study was to develop positive psychology outcome measures for people with dementia.
Methods:
Two measures were each developed in four stages. Firstly, literature reviews were conducted to identify and operationalise salient positive psychology themes in the qualitative literature and to examine existing measures of positive psychology. Secondly, themes were discussed within a qualitative study to add content validity for identified concepts (n = 17). Thirdly, draft measures were submitted to a panel of experts for feedback (n = 6). Finally, measures were used in a small-scale pilot study (n = 33) to establish psychometric properties.
Results:
Salient positive psychology themes were identified as hope, resilience, a sense of independence and social engagement. Existing measures of hope and resilience were adapted to form the Positive Psychology Outcome Measure (PPOM). Due to the inter-relatedness of independence and engagement for people with dementia, 28 items were developed for a new scale of Engagement and Independence in Dementia Questionnaire (EID-Q) following extensive qualitative work. Both measures demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (α = .849 and α = .907 respectively) and convergent validity.
Conclusions:
Two new positive psychology outcome measures were developed using a robust four-stage procedure. Preliminary psychometric data was adequate and the measures were easy to use, and acceptable for people with dementia
