    Experimental constraints on the γ\gamma-ray strength function in 90^{90}Zr using partial cross sections of the 89^{89}Y(p,γ\gamma)90^{90}Zr reaction

    Partial cross sections of the 89^{89}Y(p,γ\gamma)90^{90}Zr reaction have been measured to investigate the γ\gamma-ray strength function in the neutron-magic nucleus 90^{90}Zr. For five proton energies between Ep=3.65E_p=3.65 MeV and Ep=4.70E_p=4.70 MeV, partial cross sections for the population of seven discrete states in 90^{90}Zr have been determined by means of in-beam γ\gamma-ray spectroscopy. Since these γ\gamma-ray transitions are dominantly of E1E1 character, the present measurement allows an access to the low-lying dipole strength in 90^{90}Zr. A γ\gamma-ray strength function based on the experimental data could be extracted, which is used to describe the total and partial cross sections of this reaction by Hauser-Feshbach calculations successfully. Significant differences with respect to previously measured strength functions from photoabsorption data point towards deviations from the Brink-Axel hypothesis relating the photo-excitation and de-excitation strength functions.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    A Technique for Performing Electrical Impedance Myography in the Mouse Hind Limb: Data in Normal and ALS SOD1 G93A Animals

    Objective: To test a method for performing electrical impedance myography (EIM) in the mouse hind limb for the assessment of disease status in neuromuscular disease models. Methods: An impedance measuring device consisting of a frame with electrodes embedded within an acrylic head was developed. The head was rotatable such that data longitudinal and transverse to the major muscle fiber direction could be obtained. EIM measurements were made with this device on 16 healthy mice and 14 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) animals. Repeatability was assessed in both groups. Results: The technique was easy to perform and provided good repeatability in both healthy and ALS animals, with intra-session repeatability (mean ± SEM) of 5% ±1% and 12% ±2%, respectively. Significant differences between healthy and ALS animals were also identified (e.g., longitudinal mean 50 kHz phase was 18±0.6° for the healthy animals and 14±1.0° for the ALS animals, p = 0.0025). Conclusions: With this simple device, the EIM data obtained is highly repeatable and can differentiate healthy from ALS animals. Significance: EIM can now be applied to mouse models of neuromuscular disease to assess disease status and the effects of therapy

    Acute effect of nitroglycerin on cyclosporine-induced hypertension after cardiac transplantation

    BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine represents a milestone in immunosuppression following organ transplantation. Its use, however, comes at the cost of significant side effects, such as arterial hypertension which is rarely controllable by currently available anti-hypertensive drugs. The aim was to investigate the effect of acute administration of nitroglycerin in heart-transplanted patients with cyclosporine-induced hypertension. METHODS: The sample included 18 cyclosporine-induced hypertensive patients (HTX group) scheduled for elective cardiac catheterization following heart transplantation, as well as 6-matched essential hypertensive patients (HT group). The blood pressure (BP) in the aorta and pulmonary artery, before and after administration of nitroglycerin, was measured simultaneously. RESULTS: After injection of 50 microg and 100 microg nitroglycerin, BP significantly decreased both in HTX (systolic (s) BP p = 0.0001; diastolic (d) BP p = 0.0001) and in controls (sBP p = 0.006; dBP p = 0.05). This reduction was more pronounced in HTX (sBP p = 0.022; dBP p = 0.018 for group-comparison). Following analysis of the data in relation to its individual baseline, a significantly higher reduction of the BP induced by 100 microg nitroglycerin was observed in the HTX group compared to the HT group (p = 0.02 for sBP and p = 0.03 for dBP). 8 +/- 3 minutes after the last nitrate infusion, BP remained significantly reduced compared to baseline in HTX (p <0.001), whereas it came back to baseline in controls. The reduction in sBP was correlated to cyclosporine A levels (p = 0.04 after 50microg nitroglycerin; p = 0.05 after 100 microg nitroglycerin). CONCLUSION: After application of nitroglycerin, sBP is reduced immediately in HTX with uncontrolled cyclosporine-induced hypertension. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effect of nitrates in these patients

    Spontanous periodic breathing is associated with sympathetic hyperreactivity and baroreceptor dysfunction in hypertension

    OBJECTIVES: Intermittent periods of hypoxemia such as during periodic breathing are associated with hypertension and increased sympathetic activity. In patients with sleep apnea syndrome, hypertension is common. Treating apnea improves hypertension and reduces sympathetic outflow. The aim of the present study was to investigate the phenomenon and mechanisms of spontaneous periodic breathing in patients with hypertension. METHOD: We examined 43 hypertensive patients with untreated hypertension without left-ventricular dysfunction, heart failure or sleep apnea syndrome. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSA), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and respiration were continuously recorded at rest and during cold-pressor testing. Oxygen and a CO2-enriched gas were used to test central and peripheral chemoreceptors, respectively. Baroreceptor gain was measured using the alpha method. RESULTS: Seven out of 43 patients showed spontaneous periodic breathing while awake. No difference in MSA, HR and BP was seen between patients with and without periodic breathing at rest except the breathing pattern. However, the cold-pressor test caused a larger increase of MSA in patients with periodic breathing (203 +/- 62 vs. 62 +/- 8%, P < 0.0001 by ANOVA), as well as systolic (46 +/- 6 vs. 25 +/- 3 mmHg, P = 0.002) and diastolic BP (26 +/- 5 vs. 12 +/- 1 mmHg, P = 0.004, ANOVA). Baroreceptor gain was markedly higher in patients with periodic breathing. Chemoreceptor sensitivity was comparable. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous periodic breathing is relatively common in patients with hypertension and is associated with greatly enhanced responses to cold-pressor testing. We suggest increased baroreceptor gain and sympathetic outflow as a cause for the oscillatory respiration pattern via barorespiratory coupling

    Experimental study of excited states of 62{}^{62}Ni via one-neutron (d,p)(d,p) transfer up to the neutron-separation threshold and characteristics of the pygmy dipole resonance states

    The degree of collectivity of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) is an open question. Recently, Ries {\it et al.} have suggested the onset of the PDR beyond N=28N=28 based on the observation of a significant E1E1 strength increase in the Cr isotopes and proposed that the PDR has its origin in a few-nucleon effect. Earlier, Inakura {\it et al.} had predicted by performing systematic calculations using the random-phase approximation (RPA) with the Skyrme functional SkM* that the E1E1 strength of the PDR strongly depends on the position of the Fermi level and that it displays a clear correlation with the occupation of orbits with orbital angular momenta less than 33\hbar (l2)(l \leq 2). To further investigate the microscopic structures causing the possible formation of a PDR beyond the N=28N=28 neutron shell closure, we performed a 61^{61}Ni(d,p)62(d,p){}^{62}Ni experiment at the John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory of Florida State University. To determine the angular momentum transfer populating possible Jπ=1J^{\pi} = 1^- states and other excited states of 62{}^{62}Ni, angular distributions and associated single-neutron transfer cross sections were measured with the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph. A number of Jπ=1J^{\pi} = 1^- states were observed below the neutron-separation threshold after being populated through l=2l=2 angular momentum transfers. A comparison to available (γ,γ)(\gamma,\gamma') data for 58,60{}^{58,60}Ni provides evidence that the B(E1)B(E1) strength shifts further down in energy. The (d,p)(d,p) data clearly prove that l=0l=0 strength, i.e., the neutron (2p3/2)1(3s1/2)+1(2p_{3/2})^{-1}(3s_{1/2})^{+1} one-particle-one-hole configuration plays only a minor role for 11^- states below the neutron-separation threshold in 62{}^{62}Ni.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    g9/2g_{9/2} neutron strength in the N=29N=29 isotones and the 52^{52}Cr(d,pd,p)53^{53}Cr reaction

    We performed a measurement of the 52^{52}Cr(d,p)53(d,p)^{53}Cr reaction at 16 MeV using the Florida State University Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) and observed 26 states. While all of the states observed here had been seen in previous (d,p)(d,p) experiments, we changed five LL assignments from those reported previously and determined LL values for nine states that had not had such assignments made previously. The g9/2g_{9/2} neutron strength observed in 53^{53}Cr in the present work and in the N=29N=29 isotones 49^{49}Ca, 51^{51}Ti, and 55^{55}Fe via (d,p)(d,p) reactions is much smaller than the sum rule for this strength. Most of the observed L=4L=4 strength in these nuclei is located in states near 4 MeV excitation energy. The remaining g9/2g_{9/2} strength may be located in the continuum or may be fragmented among many bound states. A covariant density functional theory calculation provides support for the hypothesis that the g9/2g_{9/2} neutron orbit is unbound in 53^{53}Cr. The (α,3\alpha,^3He) reaction may provide a more sensitive probe for the missing g9/2g_{9/2} neutron strength. In addition, particle-γ\gamma coincidence experiments may help resolve some remaining questions in this nucleus.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2212.0438

    Shared genetic variance between obesity and white matter integrity in Mexican Americans.

    peer reviewedObesity is a chronic metabolic disorder that may also lead to reduced white matter integrity, potentially due to shared genetic risk factors. Genetic correlation analyses were conducted in a large cohort of Mexican American families in San Antonio (N = 761, 58% females, ages 18-81 years; 41.3 +/- 14.5) from the Genetics of Brain Structure and Function Study. Shared genetic variance was calculated between measures of adiposity [(body mass index (BMI; kg/m(2)) and waist circumference (WC; in)] and whole-brain and regional measurements of cerebral white matter integrity (fractional anisotropy). Whole-brain average and regional fractional anisotropy values for 10 major white matter tracts were calculated from high angular resolution diffusion tensor imaging data (DTI; 1.7 x 1.7 x 3 mm; 55 directions). Additive genetic factors explained intersubject variance in BMI (heritability, h (2) = 0.58), WC (h (2) = 0.57), and FA (h (2) = 0.49). FA shared significant portions of genetic variance with BMI in the genu (rhoG = -0.25), body (rhoG = -0.30), and splenium (rhoG = -0.26) of the corpus callosum, internal capsule (rhoG = -0.29), and thalamic radiation (rhoG = -0.31) (all p's = 0.043). The strongest evidence of shared variance was between BMI/WC and FA in the superior fronto-occipital fasciculus (rhoG = -0.39, p = 0.020; rhoG = -0.39, p = 0.030), which highlights region-specific variation in neural correlates of obesity. This may suggest that increase in obesity and reduced white matter integrity share common genetic risk factors

    Are autistic traits in the general population stable across development?

    There is accumulating evidence that autistic traits (AT) are on a continuum in the general population, with clinical autism representing the extreme end of a quantitative distribution. While the nature and severity of symptoms in clinical autism are known to persist over time, no study has examined the long-term stability of AT among typically developing toddlers. The current investigation measured AT in 360 males and 400 males from the general population close to two decades apart, using the Pervasive Developmental Disorder subscale of the Child Behavior Checklist in early childhood (M = 2.14 years; SD = 0.15), and the Autism-Spectrum Quotient in early adulthood (M = 19.50 years; SD = 0.70). Items from each scale were further divided into social (difficulties with social interaction and communication) and non-social (restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests) AT. The association between child and adult measurements of AT as well the influence of potentially confounding sociodemographic, antenatal and obstetric variables were assessed using Pearson's correlations and linear regression. For males, Total AT in early childhood were positively correlated with total AT (r = .16, p = .002) and social AT (r = .16, p = .002) in adulthood. There was also a positive correlation for males between social AT measured in early childhood and Total (r = .17, p = .001) and social AT (r = .16, p = .002) measured in adulthood. Correlations for non-social AT did not achieve significance in males. Furthermore, there was no significant longitudinal association in AT observed for males or females. Despite the constraints of using different measures and different raters at the two ages, this study found modest developmental stability of social AT from early childhood to adulthood in boys

    Measurement of pi^0 photoproduction on the proton at MAMI C

    Differential cross sections for the gamma p -> pi^0 p reaction have been measured with the A2 tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI C, up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.9 GeV. The new results, obtained with a fine energy and angular binning, increase the existing quantity of pi^0 photoproduction data by ~47%. Owing to the unprecedented statistical accuracy and the full angular coverage, the results are sensitive to high partial-wave amplitudes. This is demonstrated by the decomposition of the differential cross sections in terms of Legendre polynomials and by further comparison to model predictions. A new solution of the SAID partial-wave analysis obtained after adding the new data into the fit is presented.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
