Carbonic anhydrase-9 expression levels and prognosis in human breast cancer: association with treatment outcome
Item does not contain fulltextHere, we set out to assess CA9 expression levels by real-time quantitative RT-PCR in breast cancer tissue samples obtained from 253 patients, and correlated those with relapse-free (RFS) survival. The median follow-up time was 75 months (range 2-168 months). CA9 expression was mainly found in high-grade, steroid receptor negative cancer tissues. CA9 levels were not significantly associated with RFS (P=0.926, hazard ratio (HR)=0.99, 95% CI=0.80-1.22) in the total cohort of 253 patients. In multivariate analysis with other clinicopathological factors, CA9 (P=0.018, HR=0.77, 95% CI=0.62-0.96), the interaction of adjuvant chemotherapy with CA9 (P=0.009, HR=1.31, 95% CI=1.07-1.61) and the interaction of adjuvant endocrine therapy with CA9 (P<0.001, HR=1.41, 95% CI=1.20-1.66) all contributed significantly to the final model. These results indicate that patients with low CA9 levels benefit more from adjuvant treatment than do patients with high levels. Thus, the determination of CA9 levels could aid in the selection of patients who will not benefit from adjuvant therapy, and whose prognosis will more likely improve with other treatment modalities
Injection of photoelectrons into dense argon gas
The injection of photoelectrons in a gaseous or liquid sample is a widespread
technique to produce a cold plasma in a weakly--ionized system in order to
study the transport properties of electrons in a dense gas or liquid. We report
here the experimental results of photoelectron injection into dense argon gas
at the temperatureT=142.6 K as a function of the externally applied electric
field and gas density. We show that the experimental data can be interpreted in
terms of the so called Young-Bradbury model only if multiple scattering effects
due to the dense environment are taken into account when computing the

Improving Breast Cancer Treatment Specificity Using Aptamers Obtained by 3D Cell-SELEX
Three-dimensional spheroids of non-malignant MCF10A and malignant SKBR3 breast cells were used for subsequent 3D Cell-SELEX to generate aptamers for specific binding and treatment of breast cancer cells. Using 3D Cell-SELEX combined with Next-Generation Sequencing and bioinformatics, ten abundant aptamer families with specific structures were identified that selectively bind to SKBR3, and not to MCF10A cells. Multivalent aptamer polymers were synthesized by co-polymerization and analyzed for binding performance as well as therapeutic efficacy. Binding performance was determined by confocal fluorescence imaging and revealed specific binding and efficient internalization of aptamer polymers into SKBR3 spheroids. For therapeutic purposes, DNA sequences that intercalate the cytotoxic drug doxorubicin were co-polymerized into the aptamer polymers. Viability tests show that the drug-loaded polymers are specific and effective in killing SKBR3 breast cancer cells. Thus, the 3D-selected aptamers enhanced the specificity of doxorubicin against malignant over non-malignant breast cells. The innovative modular DNA aptamer platform based on 3D Cell SELEX and polymer multivalency holds great promise for diagnostics and treatment of breast cancer
Recent distribution of Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa in Piedmont (North Western Italy): signs of recent spreading.
The red-legged partridge Alectoris rufa in Piedmont (NW Italy) is historically limited to the hilly and low-mountain areas of
the southern half of the region, in particular lying in the Langhe and the Apennines on the Ligurian border, in the districts of Cuneo, Asti
and Alessandria. In the Cuneo district, on the Maritime Alps, hybrid populations with Alectoris graeca were also known. The distribution
of the species has been mapped in some occasions with the \u201cAtlases\u201d projects of the GPSO (Gruppo Piemontese Studi Ornitologici) and
special enquiries. On this occasion we tried to update the geographical distribution of the species using data conferred by bird-watchers
on www.regione.piemonte.it/aves/, managed by the GPSO, enquiries among hunters\u2019 organizations and specific field researches. The resulting
distribution is shown on a 10 km square grid. The species shows signs of distribution dynamism, with the occupation of some lowland
areas, where it was totally absent until the \u201890s. A little range expansion is noticeable also in the Western Monferrato. The situation
seems to be more stable (or even declining) in the Langhe area and the species is now disappeared from the alpine border. In general we
are seeing an areal contraction or density reduction on hills and mountains and an extension on lowlands. The observed changes seem to
be attributable mainly to environmental and climate changes
Expected Performance of the ATLAS Experiment - Detector, Trigger and Physics
A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS
detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and
jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the
trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes,
within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series
of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with
particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of
operation of the LHC at CERN
