Spin-polarized current and shot noise in the presence of spin flip in a quantum dot via nonequilibrium Green's functions
Using non-equilibrium Green functions we calculate the spin-polarized current
and shot noise in a ferromagnet--quantum-dot--ferromagnet (FM-QD-FM) system.
Both parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) magnetic configurations are considered.
Coulomb interaction and coherent spin-flip (similar to a transverse magnetic
field) are taken into account within the dot. We find that the interplay
between Coulomb interaction and spin accumulation in the dot can result in a
bias-dependent current polarization . In particular, can be
suppressed in the P alignment and enhanced in the AP case depending on the bias
voltage. The coherent spin-flip can also result in a switch of the current
polarization from the emitter to the collector lead. Interestingly, for a
particular set of parameters it is possible to have a polarized current in the
collector and an unpolarized current in the emitter lead. We also found a
suppression of the Fano factor to values well below 0.5.Comment: Published version. 13 pages, 7 figure
Problematic clinical features of powered wheelchair users with severely disabling multiple sclerosis
This article is made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. Copyright @ 2014 Informa UK Ltd.Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the clinical features of powered wheelchair users with severely disabling multiple sclerosis (MS) and explore the problematic clinical features influencing prescription. Method: Retrospective review of electronic and case note records of recipients of electric-powered indoor/outdoor powered wheelchairs (EPIOCs) attending a specialist wheelchair service between June 2007 and September 2008. Records were reviewed by a consultant in rehabilitation medicine, data systematically extracted and entered into a computer database. Further data were entered from clinical records. Data were extracted under three themes; demographic, diagnostic, clinical and wheelchair factors. Results: Records of 28 men mean age 57 (range 37–78, SD 12) years and 63 women mean age 57 (range 35–81, SD 11) years with MS were reviewed a mean of 64 (range 0–131) months after receiving their wheelchair. Twenty two comorbidities, 11 features of MS and 8 features of disability were thought to influence wheelchair prescription. Fifteen users were provided with specialised seating and 46 with tilt-in-space seats. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that people with severe MS requiring an EPIOC benefit from a holistic assessment to identify problematic clinical features that influence the prescription of the EPIOC and further medical and therapeutic interventions
An infrared diagnostic for magnetism in hot stars
Magnetospheric observational proxies are used for indirect detection of
magnetic fields in hot stars in the X-ray, UV, optical, and radio wavelength
ranges. To determine the viability of infrared (IR) hydrogen recombination
lines as a magnetic diagnostic for these stars, we have obtained low-resolution
(R~1200), near-IR spectra of the known magnetic B2V stars HR 5907 and HR 7355,
taken with the Ohio State Infrared Imager/Spectrometer (OSIRIS) attached to the
4.1m Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope. Both stars show definite
variable emission features in IR hydrogen lines of the Brackett series, with
similar properties as those found in optical spectra, including the derived
location of the detected magnetospheric plasma. These features also have the
added advantage of a lowered contribution of stellar flux at these wavelengths,
making circumstellar material more easily detectable. IR diagnostics will be
useful for the future study of magnetic hot stars, to detect and analyze
lower-density environments, and to detect magnetic candidates in areas obscured
from UV and optical observations, increasing the number of known magnetic stars
to determine basic formation properties and investigate the origin of their
magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in A&
Edge phonons in black phosphorus
Exfoliated black phosphorus has recently emerged as a new two-dimensional
crystal that, due to its peculiar and anisotropic crystalline and electronic
band structures, may have potentially important applications in electronics,
optoelectronics and photonics. Despite the fact that the edges of layered
crystals host a range of singular properties whose characterization and
exploitation are of utmost importance for device development, the edges of
black phosphorus remain poorly characterized. In this work, the atomic
structure and the behavior of phonons near different black phosphorus edges are
experimentally and theoretically studied using Raman spectroscopy and density
functional theory calculations. Polarized Raman results show the appearance of
new modes at the edges of the sample, and their spectra depend on the atomic
structure of the edges (zigzag or armchair). Theoretical simulations confirm
that the new modes are due to edge phonon states that are forbidden in the
bulk, and originated from the lattice termination rearrangements.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Frequency-Dependent Current Noise through Quantum-Dot Spin Valves
We study frequency-dependent current noise through a single-level quantum dot
connected to ferromagnetic leads with non-collinear magnetization. We propose
to use the frequency-dependent Fano factor as a tool to detect single-spin
dynamics in the quantum dot. Spin precession due to an external magnetic and/or
a many-body exchange field affects the Fano factor of the system in two ways.
First, the tendency towards spin-selective bunching of the transmitted
electrons is suppressed, which gives rise to a reduction of the low-frequency
noise. Second, the noise spectrum displays a resonance at the Larmor frequency,
whose lineshape depends on the relative angle of the leads' magnetizations.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figure
Experimental analysis of lateral impact on planar brittle material
The fragmentation of alumina and glass plates due to lateral impact is
studied. A few hundred plates have been fragmented at different impact
velocities and the produced fragments are analyzed. The method employed in this
work allows one to investigate some geometrical properties of the fragments,
besides the traditional size distribution usually studied in former
experiments. We found that, although both materials exhibit qualitative similar
fragment size distribution function, their geometrical properties appear to be
quite different. A schematic model for two-dimensional fragmentation is also
presented and its predictions are compared to our experimental results. The
comparison suggests that the analysis of the fragments' geometrical properties
constitutes a more stringent test of the theoretical models' assumptions than
the size distribution
