Inventário De Moluscos Do Estuário Do Rio Paraíba No Nordeste Do Brasil
Coastal ecosystems of northeastern Brazil have important biodiversity with regard to marine mollusks, which are insufficiently studied. Here we provide an inventory of mollusks from two sites in the estuary of the Paraíba River. Mollusks were collected in 2014 and 2016 on the coast and sandbanks located on the properties of Treze de Maio and Costinha de Santo Antônio. The malacofaunal survey identified 12 families, 20 genera and 21 species of bivalves, 17 families, 19 genera and 20 species of gastropods and one species of cephalopod. Bivalves of the family Veneridae Rafinesque, 1815 were the most representative, with a total of five species. Gastropods of the family Littorinidae Children, 1834 had the greatest species richness. The most abundant species were: Neritina virginea (Linnaeus, 1758), Brachidontes exustus (Linnaeus, 1758), Crassostrea brasiliana (Lamarck, 1819), Cerithium atratum (Born, 1778), Anomalocardia brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791), Parvanachis obesa (C. B. Adams, 1845), Phrontis polygonata (Lamarck, 1822), Littoraria angulifera (Lamarck, 1822), L. flava (King, 1832), Tagelus plebeius (Lightfoot, 1786), Echinolittorina lineolata (d’Orbigny, 1840) and Iphigenia brasiliensis (Lamarck, 1818). The results show that the study area has considerable species richness of Mollusca, requiring environmental monitoring in the region mainly due to the economic importance of some species to the local population. © 2017, Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP. Enhancement of antimicrobial activity of antibiotics and antifungals by the use of natural products from Pityrogramma calomelanos (L.) link
The ethanol extract and methanol fraction of Pityrogramma calomelanos (L.) link were evaluated for antibacterial, antifungal and modulatory activities against strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, C. krusei and C. tropicalis. The antimicrobial activity of the natural products was evaluated by the microdilution method associated or not with aminoglycosides and antifungals. The ethanol extract and methanol fraction of P. calomelanos showed good activity against S. aureus when associated with aminoglycosides and with benzoilmetronidazol against species of the genus Candida. These results indicate that P. calomelanos should be studied as a possible source of natural products to combat bacteria and fungi either directly or by modulating the mechanisms of resistance of these microorganisms, enhancing the antimicrobial activity of these drugs and combating microbial resistance
Dark energy, non-minimal couplings and the origin of cosmic magnetic fields
In this work we consider the most general electromagnetic theory in curved
space-time leading to linear second order differential equations, including
non-minimal couplings to the space-time curvature. We assume the presence of a
temporal electromagnetic background whose energy density plays the role of dark
energy, as has been recently suggested. Imposing the consistency of the theory
in the weak-field limit, we show that it reduces to standard electromagnetism
in the presence of an effective electromagnetic current which is generated by
the momentum density of the matter/energy distribution, even for neutral
sources. This implies that in the presence of dark energy, the motion of
large-scale structures generates magnetic fields. Estimates of the present
amplitude of the generated seed fields for typical spiral galaxies could reach
G without any amplification. In the case of compact rotating objects,
the theory predicts their magnetic moments to be related to their angular
momenta in the way suggested by the so called Schuster-Blackett conjecture.Comment: 5 pages, no figure
Experimental implementation of a NMR entanglement witness
Entanglement witnesses (EW) allow the detection of entanglement in a quantum
system, from the measurement of some few observables. They do not require the
complete determination of the quantum state, which is regarded as a main
advantage. On this paper it is experimentally analyzed an entanglement witness
recently proposed in the context of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
experiments to test it in some Bell-diagonal states. We also propose some
optimal entanglement witness for Bell-diagonal states. The efficiency of the
two types of EW's are compared to a measure of entanglement with tomographic
cost, the generalized robustness of entanglement. It is used a GRAPE algorithm
to produce an entangled state which is out of the detection region of the EW
for Bell-diagonal states. Upon relaxation, the results show that there is a
region in which both EW fails, whereas the generalized robustness still shows
entanglement, but with the entanglement witness proposed here with a better
performance
Effects of in vitro digestion and in vitro colonic fermentation on stability and functional properties of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil.) beverages
Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a plant that grows naturally in South America. From its leaves and thin stems different kinds of beverages are prepared (chimarrão, tererê and tea mate), all of them rich in bioactive substances. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation on the stability of the polyphenols and on the antioxidant, antimicrobial and antitumoral activities of the yerba mate beverages. The phenolic chromatographic profile revealed that both the in vitro digestion and the colonic fermentation caused a pronounced decrease in 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid in the preparations. However, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid and salvianolic acid I were only barely affected in all preparations. Despite the decrease in the phytochemicals content, yerba mate beverages maintain their functional properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial and antitumoral activities. The authors thank the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq, Proc. 3079/2015-8) and Fundação Araucária (Proc.24/2012) for funding this study. Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of endovascular management for transplant renal artery stenosis
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular intervention with angioplasty and stent placement in patients with transplant renal artery stenosis. METHODS: All patients diagnosed with transplant renal artery stenosis and graft dysfunction or resistant systemic hypertension who underwent endovascular treatment with stenting from February 2011 to April 2016 were included in this study. The primary endpoint was clinical success, and the secondary endpoints were technical success, complication rate and stent patency. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients with transplant renal artery stenosis underwent endovascular treatment, and three of them required reinterventions, resulting in a total of 27 procedures. The clinical success rate was 100%. All graft dysfunction patients showed decreased serum creatinine levels and improved estimated glomerular filtration rates and creatinine levels. Patients with high blood pressure also showed improved control of systemic blood pressure and decreased use of antihypertensive drugs. The technical success rate of the procedure was 97%. Primary patency and assisted primary patency rates at one year were 90.5% and 100%, respectively. The mean follow-up time of patients was 794.04 days after angioplasty. CONCLUSION: Angioplasty with stent placement for the treatment of transplant renal artery stenosis is a safe and effective technique with good results in both the short and long term
Activated Random Walkers: Facts, Conjectures and Challenges
We study a particle system with hopping (random walk) dynamics on the integer
lattice . The particles can exist in two states, active or
inactive (sleeping); only the former can hop. The dynamics conserves the number
of particles; there is no limit on the number of particles at a given site.
Isolated active particles fall asleep at rate , and then remain
asleep until joined by another particle at the same site. The state in which
all particles are inactive is absorbing. Whether activity continues at long
times depends on the relation between the particle density and the
sleeping rate . We discuss the general case, and then, for the
one-dimensional totally asymmetric case, study the phase transition between an
active phase (for sufficiently large particle densities and/or small )
and an absorbing one. We also present arguments regarding the asymptotic mean
hopping velocity in the active phase, the rate of fixation in the absorbing
phase, and survival of the infinite system at criticality. Using mean-field
theory and Monte Carlo simulation, we locate the phase boundary. The phase
transition appears to be continuous in both the symmetric and asymmetric
versions of the process, but the critical behavior is very different. The
former case is characterized by simple integer or rational values for critical
exponents (, for example), and the phase diagram is in accord with
the prediction of mean-field theory. We present evidence that the symmetric
version belongs to the universality class of conserved stochastic sandpiles,
also known as conserved directed percolation. Simulations also reveal an
interesting transient phenomenon of damped oscillations in the activity
density
