The present study, covering students from public schools and a private school on the island of São Miguel (Azores, Portugal), aims to meet the difficulties of the students of the 3rd and 4th years of the primary education in solving tasks involving construction, reading and interpreting tables and statistical graphs, in the context of Organization and Data Handling (ODH). We present the main results obtained from statistical methods, among which we highlight some non-parametric hypothesis tests and the Categorical Principal Component Analysis (CatPCA), given the nature of the variables included in the questionnaire (mostly nominal and ordinal variables)

AbstractsThe importance of entrepreneurship promotion has increased significantly in today's society, especial-ly during periods of crises. This work is based on the responses obtained through a survey conducted on a sample of 305 undergraduates of the University of the Azores, enrolled in different science pro-grams. The aim is to deepen the knowledge of the entrepreneurial propensity of higher education students in the Azores, and in that way the university can stimulate their interest in creating business-es. The main results obtained, using exploratory data analysis (from the univariate to the multivari-ate), are presented and discussed. This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. In this work, classical as well as probabilistic hierarchical clustering models are used to look for typologies of variables in classical data, typologies of groups of individuals in a classical three-way data table, and typologies of groups of individuals in a symbolic data table. The data are issued from a questionnaire on business area in order to evaluate the quality and satisfaction with the services provided to customers by an automobile company. The Ascendant Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (AHCA) is based, respectively, on the basic affinity coefficient and on extensions of this coefficient for the cases of a classical three-way data table and a symbolic data table, obtained from the weighted generalized affinity coefficient. The probabilistic aggregation criteria used, under the probabilistic approach named VL methodology (V for Validity, L for Linkage), resort essentially to probabilistic notions for the definition of the comparative functions. The validation of the obtained partitions is based on the global statistics of levels (STAT)

ICERI 2020: 13th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation, Sevilha, Nov 9, 2020 - Nov 11, 2020.In a society in which technology and changes are increasingly fast, the role of Statistics has become increasingly important. The students' attitudes towards Statistics, according to the literature review, are very interrelated with the affective and cognitive components and with the value attributed to this discipline in terms of its importance and usefulness in their personal and professional life. The psychological well-being of students, in addition to all other related components, as well as their attitudes towards Statistics and Technology, can affect their involvement and learning of contents in the scope of this discipline. The present research, through a questionnaire, aims to better understand the attitudes that students have towards Statistics and Technology and what are the factors that can affect their learning....[...].... The participants in this study were students from Portuguese Universities who had already attended Statistics courses during the 1st cycle of higher education. A structural equation model analysis, performed using PLS, revealed a statistically significant relationship between satisfaction with life and the five subscales of Students Attitudes toward Statistics and Technology Scale. In the model used, almost all the interrelationships between the factors of attitudes of students were statistically significant at level 0.01, suggesting that the use of technology affects the students' attitudes regarding the components "Affect" (emotions concerning statistics) and "Value" (usefulness of statistics in students' personal and professional life). This work is financed by national funds through FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within the scope of the project «UIDB/04647/2020» of CICS.NOVA - Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

ICERI 2020: 13th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation, Sevilha, Nov 9, 2020 - Nov 11, 2020.In the current period of Covid-19 pandemic crisis, there were very unexpected changes in the society, in general, and in the education system, in particular, with the quick change to distance learning and teaching. This situation took the educational community by surprise and, in particular, its main protagonists (students and teachers). The digital revolution poses new challenges, but it also provides renewed learning opportunities that make it possible to face the current situation. However, there are still social inequalities in access to computer equipment and internet. This empirical study aims to investigate how teachers evaluated their performance in the context of distance learning and teaching, due to the current pandemic situation, in terms of pedagogical resources and instruments, teaching strategies and assessment of learning, as well as the students' perceptions about those topics....[…].... Data, collected by questionnaire, were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics (namely, the hypothesis test for the difference between two proportions). It was found that, in general, teachers expressed the most favorable opinions toward distance learning and teaching, comparatively to the students. On the other hand, students expressed a greater diversity of opinions, when compared to the teachers. The most dissonant opinions between the two parties were those referring to the items “Diversification of the resources used”, “Diversification of the activities carried out”, “Incentive to participate in activities and projects that contribute to learning” and “Carrying out activities involving other disciplines”. The most similar opinions between students and teachers are related to the items “opportunities to participate in class activities” and “explanation of the evaluation criteria”.This work is financed by national funds through FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within the scope of the project «UIDB/04647/2020» of CICS.NOVA - Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Copyright © 2013 Walter de Gruyter GmbH.In this paper, we illustrate an application of Ascendant Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (AHCA) to complex data taken from the literature (interval data), based on the standardized weighted generalized affinity coefficient, by the method of Wald and Wolfowitz. The probabilistic aggregation criteria used belong to a parametric family of methods under the probabilistic approach of AHCA, named VL methodology. Finally, we compare the results achieved using our approach with those obtained by other authors
