Diagnosis of an EPS module
Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova
de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Electrotécnica e ComputadoresThis thesis addresses and contextualizes the problem of diagnostic of an Evolvable
Production System (EPS). An EPS is a complex and lively entity composed of intelligent modules that interact through bio-inspired mechanisms, to ensure high system availability and seamless reconfiguration.
The actual economic situation together with the increasing demand of high quality and low
priced customized products imposed a shift in the production policies of enterprises. Shop floors have to become more agile and flexible to accommodate the new production paradigms. Rather than selling products enterprises are establishing a trend of offering services to explore business
opportunities.
The new production paradigms, potentiated by the advances in Information Technologies
(IT), especially in web related standards and technologies as well as the progressive acceptance of the multi-agent systems (MAS) concept and related technologies, envision collections of modules whose individual and collective function adapts and evolves ensuring the fitness and adequacy of the shop
floor in tackling profitable but volatile business opportunities. Despite the richness of the interactions and the effort set in modelling them, their potential to favour fault propagation and interference, in
these complex environments, has been ignored from a diagnostic point of view.
With the increase of distributed and autonomous components that interact in the execution of processes current diagnostic approaches will soon be insufficient. While current system dynamics are complex and to a certain extent unpredictable the adoption of the next generation of approaches and technologies comes at the cost of a yet increased complexity.Whereas most of the research in such distributed industrial systems is focused in the study and establishment of control structures, the problem of diagnosis has been left relatively unattended.
There are however significant open challenges in the diagnosis of such modular systems including:
understanding fault propagation and ensuring scalability and co-evolution.
This work provides an implementation of a state-of-the-art agent-based interaction-oriented architecture compliant with the EPS paradigm that supports the introduction of a new developed diagnostic algorithm that has the ability to cope with the modern manufacturing paradigm challenges and to provide diagnostic analysis that explores the network dimension of multi-agent systems
Ripples: a tool for supervision and control of remote assets
We describe the Ripples cloud-based software for coordination and control of multiple remote assets. Ripples can ingest and disseminate data coming from multiple sources such as physical models, drifting sensors, marine traffic (AIS) and unmanned vehicles deployed in remote areas. On top of data dissemination and awareness, Ripples can also be used for planning the autonomous assets using satellite communications, maintaining the operators in the loop.Peer Reviewe
Studying the Pacific Subtropical Front with multiple assets
We describe a novel approach to physical oceanography by coordinating remote sensing, multiple autonomous vehicles and ship borne sensors. In contrast with conventional oceanography where ships are the single point of sampling in the middle of a big ocean or are used simply as the base of operations from where autonomous vehicles are deployed, we propose a new approach where ship and autonomous vehicles are coordinated together via satellite communications. We conclude with results and lessons learned from a real-world deployment of the R/V Falkor oceanographic ship together with multiple autonomous vehicles to study the Pacific's Subtropical Front, 800 miles off the coast of San Diego
REP18 Atlantic: a large scale exercise using unmanned systems
We present the REP18 exercise in which were operated heterogeneous unmanned underwater and aerial vehicles. This large scale exercise organized together with the PO Navy and with the participation of key players in the area, served to test the large scale use of unmanned vehicles in real-world operations both in defence and scientific areas. This work showcases how the LSTS Toolchain for Autonomous Systems enables all this.Peer Reviewe
An IPtel architecture based on the SIP protocol
More and better accesses to the Internet increase the interest in using it to carry not only data but also voice and video. The IP Telephony (IPTel) was born in this context and offers a framework to create multimedia communication systems. The Session Initiation Protocol, used in the IPTel architecture, is a protocol for signaling and call control between two or more participants. This paper presents telephony over IP service. Different protocols typically used in IPtel are analyzed and the architecture and functionality of SIP protocol are explained. Different mobility modes provided by SIP through the application layer are described. Finally we present the sIPtel, a Java application that supports real audio and video communications and uses the SIP protocol for call signaling

Towards a platform for a supplier quality management system
Today any OEM automotive industry that wants a status of a world-class organization has to follow a proper supplier quality management based on the worldwide recognized international standards. With this, the customer within a supply chain should have the sureness that the company has supplier capabilities in place to provide a service that consistently meets its needs and expectations. Although some of this Supplier Quality Management Systems (SQMS) are deeply integrated and used inside of an organization, sometimes they are implemented using inappropriate or limited tools, making the work of employees harder and acting often as entropy sources in those systems. Having the right tools to handle Inspections as well as Nonconformance, Complaint, Corrective Action and Concession processes is key to successfully track the supplier performance. This paper presents a platform to support a SQMS, that fits the technical specification ISO/TS 16949 requirements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
An indoor navigation architecture using variable data sources for blind and visually impaired persons
Contrary to outdoor positioning and navigation
systems, there isn’t a counterpart global solution for indoor
environments. Usually, the deployment of an indoor positioning
system must be adapted case by case, according to the
infrastructure and the objective of the localization. A particularly
delicate case is related with persons who are blind or visually
impaired. A robust and easy to use indoor navigation solution
would be extremely useful, but this would also be particularly
difficult to develop, given the special requirements of the system
that would have to be more accurate and user friendly than a
general solution. This paper presents a contribute to this subject,
by proposing a hybrid indoor positioning system adaptable to the
surrounding indoor structure, and dealing with different types of
signals to increase accuracy. This would permit lower the
deployment costs, since it could be done gradually, beginning
with the likely existing Wi-Fi infrastructure to get a fairy
accuracy up to a high accuracy using visual tags and NFC tags
when necessary and possible.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
