Seasonal cointegration and the stability of the demand for money
Studies on money demand in both developed and developing countries coincide in reporting systematic over predictions of monetary aggregates, non-robust estimated parameters and out-of-sample forecast variances that are too large to guide monetary policy. Several explanations have been given for these failures, including dynamic misspecification, omitted variables such as financial innovations, and non observed components. This paper explores an alternative, simpler way to approach the instability of money demand using seasonal-cointegration techniques. Using Chilean data we find that seasonal cointegrating vectors exist and, when omitted from the estimation, account for a substantial fraction of the observed instability in money demand functions. Because seasonal cointegrating vectors act as additional long-run restrictions, they can substantially reduce the variance of forecast errors. The estimated demand for money in Chile is remarkably stable in spite of the profound structural and financial reforms carried out throughout the 1977-2000 period, parameters are robust and similar to those suggested by economic theories.
Seasonal Cointegration in Money Demand
Empirical estimates of the demand for money exhibit standard problems: model instability, parameter inconsistency with regard to theoretical priors, and poor forecasting capabilities (Goldfeld and Sichel, 1990). This study explores to what extent an inadequate treatment of seasonality is responsible for the disappointing results obtained in the Chilean case. The empirical approach is to test for the presence of unit roots at different frequencies of money balances and their main determinants (annual, semiannual, and quartely). Once seasonal integration is established, seasonal-cointegration error-correction models allow us to trace long-term relationships between these variables in a more satisfactory way than standard models. The estimated seasonal-cointegration demand for money —which excludes any ad-hoc variable— is stable and robust for 1977-1999 and its forecasting capability is superior to that of traditional models.

Blocking of flavor-nausea learning by non-flavor cues: assessment through orofacial reactivity responses
We investigated, using orofacial reactivity assessment, whether nonflavor context cues can elicit conditioned aversive reactions, and also whether context cues interfere, through blocking, with the reduction in taste palatability during taste aversion conditioning. Experiment 1 showed that a context previously paired with LiCl evoked aversive orofacial reactions, and also attenuated the reduction in palatability of a saccharin solution which was paired with LiCl in that context. In Experiment 2, this blocking effect was abolished when the rats were given nonreinforced exposure to the previously LiCl-paired context (context extinction) before aversive conditioning of the saccharin in compound with the context. These results confirm that context stimuli can elicit conditioned aversive reactions in the absence of any flavor component, and demonstrate that context cues can interfere with the affective aspects of taste aversion learning. Thus nonflavor cues appear to engage the same processes as taste cues in aversion learning. These results are consistent with the idea that taste aversion learning is governed by general associative mechanisms and the special properties of nausea, rather than by a selective mechanism for poison-avoidance
Alcohol seeking by rats becomes habitual after prolonged training
EPIC247098361b: a transiting warm Saturn on an eccentric days orbit around a star
We report the discovery of EPIC247098361b using photometric data of the
Kepler K2 satellite coupled with ground-based spectroscopic observations.
EPIC247098361b has a mass of M M, a radius of
R R, and a moderately low equilibrium temperature of
K due to its relatively large star-planet separation of
AU. EPIC247098361b orbits its bright () late F-type host star
in an eccentric orbit () every 11.2 days, and is one of only
four well characterized warm Jupiters having hosts stars brighter than .
We estimate a heavy element content of 20 7 M for
EPIC247098361b, which is consistent with standard models of giant planet
formation. The bright host star of EPIC247098361b makes this system a well
suited target for detailed follow-up observations that will aid in the study of
the atmospheres and orbital evolution of giant planets at moderate separations
from their host stars.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRA
Functional brain networks underlying latent inhibition of conditioned disgust in rats
The present experiment examined the neuronal networks involved in the latent inhibition of conditioned disgust by measuring brain oxidative metabolism. Rats were given nonreinforced intraoral (IO) exposure to saccharin (exposed groups) or water (non-exposed groups) followed by a conditioning trial in which the animals received an infusion of saccharin paired (or unpaired) with LiCl. On testing, taste reactivity responses displayed by the rats during the infusion of the saccharin were examined. Behavioral data showed that preexposure to saccharin attenuated the development of LiCl-induced conditioned disgust reactions, indicating that the effects of taste aversion on hedonic taste reactivity had been reduced. With respect to cumulative oxidative metabolic activity across the whole study period, the parabrachial nucleus was the only single region examined which showed differential activity between groups which received saccharin-LiCl pairings with and without prior non-reinforced saccharin exposure, suggesting a key role in the effects of latent inhibition of taste aversion learning. In addition, many functional connections between brain regions were revealed through correlational analysis of metabolic activity, in particular an accumbens-amygdala interaction that may be involved in both positive and negative hedonic responses
Paleocene seismic facies in the continental margin of Uruguay (South America)
In this contribution seismic facies of the Paleocene sequence are characterized in offshore basins of Uruguay through the study of a 2D seismic database. Seven seismic horizons were identified, limiting six sedimentary intervals with different characteristics. Hence, the complexity of the Paleocene sequence is greater than suggested by other studies. Seismic facies located in the basis of the sequence can be interpreted as sandy deposits related to the action of both turbidity and bottom currents. The identification of these deposits agrees with the expected Cretaceous source rocks, in addition to the importance of the overlying Paleocene shales as a regional seal. The results of this work open interesting exploratory perspectives in the continental margin of Uruguay
