    The introduction of any drug which holds out some prospect of success in the treatment of spirillar and trypanosome diseases must, of necessity, attract great attention but no remedy has, up to the present, caused such a furore as Salvarsan. Although quinine, salicy - lates and tuberculin have all had great ovations they have not created such a universal enthusiasm as "606 ". Medical men have described its effects in *lowing terms and the lay press has contained some extraordinary statements about its curative properties.All these statements err on one point - the mention of the word cure. It cannot be too strongly insisted that we cannot promise that yet and the circulation of false powers will bring disappointment to some people and throw some discredit on the drug. On the other hand accounts of amaurosis after it are erroneous and they will tend to limit its use unfairly. Wechsel- mann, Ernest Lane, Pernet, Hutchinson and others have all tried to moderate the excessive enthusiasm which has arisen about it.In a third way false statements have been publish d. Some say it will supplant mercury and iodides but that is impossible. Cases are on record where these old and trusted remedies have acted and Salvarsan failed. There is no doubt however that it will limit their use.It marks the commencement of a new era in the treatment of parasitic diseases and, in time, it may become the parent of new substances which may have a still better action. At present it is doing excellent work and if we improve its technique and dosage or combine it with other substances we may, in time, wipe out the scourge of syphilis which has done so much evil since the middle ages

    Public Perceptions of Wisconsin’s Pavements and Tradeoffs in Pavement Improvement

    Findings are reported from Phase II of a three-phase pooled-fund project in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota to determine perceptions of drivers regarding pavement of rural two-lane highways. Among the survey topics were drivers\u27 trust in the state department of transportation (DOT), pavement improvement trade-offs, and pavement evaluation. Results of the Wisconsin portion of the survey data are the focus of this study. The survey questionnaire was based in part on Phase I focus groups conducted to gauge beliefs about pavements as well as the language describing ruts, tining, and other pavement characteristics. Phase II entailed a statewide telephone survey of at least 400 randomly selected drivers in each of the three states. Although the focus here is on Wisconsin results, survey responses across the three states were very consistent. Included in the findings discussed are perceptions of pavement and the state DOT and pavement improvement options relating to construction, travel time, and delays. Results disclose key public perceptions of priorities with regard to spending limited funds. Also discussed are statistically significant relationships providing additional insights into public perceptions and pavement improvement on rural two-lane highways

    Impact of Many-Body Effects on Landau Levels in Graphene

    We present magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurements on suspended graphene to investigate the charge carrier density-dependent electron-electron interaction in the presence of Landau levels. Utilizing gate-tunable magneto-phonon resonances, we extract the charge carrier density dependence of the Landau level transition energies and the associated effective Fermi velocity vFv_\mathrm{F}. In contrast to the logarithmic divergence of vFv_\mathrm{F} at zero magnetic field, we find a piecewise linear scaling of vFv_\mathrm{F} as a function of charge carrier density, due to a magnetic field-induced suppression of the long-range Coulomb interaction. We quantitatively confirm our experimental findings by performing tight-binding calculations on the level of the Hartree-Fock approximation, which also allow us to estimate an excitonic binding energy of \approx 6 meV contained in the experimentally extracted Landau level transitions energies.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    In-vitro activation of complement system by lactic acidosis in newborn and adults.

    INTRODUCTION: Complement activation occurs secondary to a variety of external stimuli. Lactic acidosis has been previously shown to activate the complement factors C3a and C5a. In the present investigation we examined the differential effect of lactic acidosis on anaphylatoxin levels in cord and adult blood. Furthermore we aimed to determine if the entire complement cascade could be activated by lactic acidosis. METHODS: Cord and adult blood samples (n = 20 each) were collected and incubated for one hour in either untreated condition or with the addition of lactate in two concentrations (5.5 mmol/l vs. 22 mmol/l). Following incubation, levels of C3a, C5a and sC5b-9, and blood gas parameters were determined. RESULTS: Anaphylatoxin (C3a and C5a) and sC5b-9 levels increased with the addition of lactate in a dose-dependent manner in cord and adult blood (C3a: 1 h, 5.5 mmo/l, 22 mmol/l: 418/498/622 microg/l in cord blood; 1010/1056/1381 microg/l in adult blood, p<0,05; similar results were found for C5a and sC5b-9). CONCLUSION: Lactic acidosis leads to an activation of the entire complement system in neonates and in adults. This activation is dose-dependent and more pronounced in adults as compared to neonates

    Biosensing platform combining label-free and labelled analysis using Bloch surface waves

    Bloch surface waves (BSW) propagating at the boundary of truncated photonic crystals (1D-PC) have emerged as an attractive approach for label-free sensing in plasmon-like sensor configurations. Due to the very low losses in such dielectric thin film stacks, BSW feature very low angular resonance widths compared to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) case. Besides label-free operation, the large field enhancement and the absence of quenching allow utilizing BSW coupled fluorescence detection to additionally sense the presence of fluorescent labels. This approach can be adapted to the case of angularly resolved resonance detection, thus giving rise to a combined label-free / labelled biosensor platform. It features a parallel analysis of multiple spots arranged as a one-dimensional array inside a microfluidic channel of a disposable chip. Application of such a combined biosensing approach to the detection of the Angiopoietin-2 cancer biomarker in buffer solutions is reported

    Comparative analysis of 2D and 3D models of turbulent natural convection and thermal surface radiation in closed areas

    Turbulent natural convection with surface thermal radiation in air-filled enclosures has been investigated. The equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy are solved using both finite difference and control volume methods. It should be noted that the working medium is Newtonian and heat conducting fluid, where the Boussinesq approximation is valid. The walls are supposed to be gray, diffuse emitters and reflectors of radiation. The left and right surfaces of the enclosure are isothermal walls, while other surfaces are adiabatic walls. The considered fluid flow is turbulent. The main aim of the present research is to compare the heat transfer process in 2D and 3D enclosures. Detailed results including flow profiles, temperature fields, and average Nusselt numbers have been presented

    Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Heterogeneous Nanocatalytic Ozonation

    Multiwalled carbon nanotubes functionalized by plasma oxygen (CNTs) have been used as heterogeneous catalysts for the ozonation of methyl orange (MO) dye (CI 13025) in aqueous solutions. It was found that the addition of CNTs significantly enhanced the dye decolorization as compared to ozone alone or when activated carbon was used at the same dose as CNTs. Both the initial ozone concentration and catalyst dosage enhanced the removal of MO. However, ozone gas concentrations higher than 6 g/m3 NTP did not further improve the decolorization rates. The removal efficiency of MO increased with pH in the range 2 to 3, while a reverse trend was observed when the pH increased from 3 to 9. The addition of a radical scavenger resulted in only a limited change in the decolorization rates suggesting that molecular ozone was the main pathway by which MO decolorization occurred in solution. However, under favorable conditions for MO attraction to CNT surface (pH = 3), the decolorization rate has significantly increased. At higher pH than the pKa value of MO (3.47) and the point of zero charge of CNT (3.87), a condition that favors the electrostatic repulsion of MO from CNT, the rates were reduced in the presence of CNT as compared to ozone alone possibly due to loss of part of the supplied ozone in un-useful parallel reactions

    Moderate hyperventilation during intravenous anesthesia increases net cerebral lactate efflux

    BACKGROUND:: Hyperventilation is known to decrease cerebral blood flow (CBF) and to impair cerebral metabolism, but the threshold in patients undergoing intravenous anesthesia is unknown. The authors hypothesized that reduced CBF associated with moderate hyperventilation might impair cerebral aerobic metabolism in patients undergoing intravenous anesthesia. METHODS:: Thirty male patients scheduled for coronary surgery were included in a prospective, controlled crossover trial. Measurements were performed under fentanyl-midazolam anesthesia in a randomized sequence aiming at partial pressures of carbon dioxide of 30 and 50 mmHg. Endpoints were CBF, blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery, and cerebral metabolic rates for oxygen, glucose, and lactate. Global CBF was measured using a modified Kety-Schmidt technique with argon as inert gas tracer. CBF velocity of the middle cerebral artery was recorded by transcranial Doppler sonography. Data were presented as mean (SD). Two-sided paired t tests and one-way ANOVA for repeated measures were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS:: Moderate hyperventilation significantly decreased CBF by 60%, blood flow velocity by 41%, cerebral oxygen delivery by 58%, and partial pressure of oxygen of the jugular venous bulb by 45%. Cerebral metabolic rates for oxygen and glucose remained unchanged; however, net cerebral lactate efflux significantly increased from -0.38 (2.18) to -2.41(2.43) μmol min 100 g. CONCLUSIONS:: Moderate hyperventilation, when compared with moderate hypoventilation, in patients with cardiovascular disease undergoing intravenous anesthesia increased net cerebral lactate efflux and markedly reduced CBF and partial pressure of oxygen of the jugular venous bulb, suggesting partial impairment of cerebral aerobic metabolism at clinically relevant levels of hypocapnia.     Automated universal chip platform for fluorescence based cellular assays

Within the last few years we established a micro fluidic platform including a peristaltic micro pump as well as several valves, manifolds and micro channels [1]. For optical online monitoring the micro fluidic system is bonded to a glass slide. Furthermore the biochip is fixed on an electrically heated support. The pneumatically actuated peristaltic pump as well as the temperature control is performed by a control device. For the fluorescence based online monitoring a robotic guided fluorescence measurement module was developed, which supports the detection of fluorescence in microtiter plates and microfluidic systems. This measurement module allows the fluorescence detection of two different excitation / detection wavelengths (480 / 530 nm and 570 / 620 nm) and was successfully characterised using EGFP and Rhodamine 6G. Additionally three cell based assays with bacterial, yeast and human cells were characterized
