Nowadays, the Elderly People Programs take place in more than fifty public and private universities. This model of educational intervention must permit that the major person recovers their role of historical subject that by means of their organized action can be developed cultural and intellectually while promoting the specific improvement of their quality of life. The universities of elders are not foreign to the social reality that wrap them where the change produced in the information and communication technologies takes place to such speed that the major person only will be able to be adapted, if the society of the information becomes converted in «Society of Lifelong learning» apprenticeship. In this way that in the majority of universities of elders exist courses, workshops or monographic related with the information and communication technologies, the computer science or the use and manage of the computer. The present research aims at discussing matters related to the teaching and learning processes of computer science in the Elders of University, starting from the opinions of its major figures, student and teacher, where together with the difficulty to teach a new technology, is the difficulty to teach to a heterogeneous group like the elders students

Presentation made at Latinos in the Heartland (10th : 2012 : Kansas City, Mo.) and published in the annual conference proceedings.Hispanics represent the fastest growing ethnic group with a culturally, demographically, and geographically diverse population. For opportunities to be beneficial to the Latino community, it is essential to provide opportunities in volunteerism, such as training for youth and adults based on awareness of the community they serve. This paper discusses Latinos participating in volunteerism training. The new skilled volunteers sent a strong message where they demonstrated that putting their new skills into practice, allowed them to plan and implement a successfully multicultural summer program, with responsibility and passion for children at an elementary school in Sea Tac, WA

Presentation made at Latinos in the Heartland (13th : 2015 : Columbia, Mo.) and published in the annual conference proceedings. As science and technology play an increasingly significant role in shaping the direction of the global landscape, it's important to develop and engage young minds that will eventually lead these industries. America lacks a strong representation of students graduating with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees in relation to other countries around the globe, which could eventually decrease its competitive advantage as a large global entity. Within this deficient presence of American students lies other layers of poor representation, such as from females and minorities like Hispanic-Americans and African-Americans. Engaging students in STEM fields can prove to be a difficult challenge, however universities around the country are experimenting with options to increase interest among young students, particularly from these minorities. Ohio State University Extension designed the "4-H Eco-Bot Challenge Experiment" which introduced youth to robotic engineering concepts. The competition presented participants with the problem of programming a robot to clean up a simulated environmental spill. Washington State University modified the challenge to ensure that Latino youth across the country could participate, with results that indicated that many students were interested in STEM after being exposed to scientific problem-solving. By developing and implementing STEM projects for Latino urban youth, 4-H Youth Development has demonstrated its capacity to deliver educational opportunities that will enrich the education of youth and expand the program's impact on Latino audiences. Latino Youth Involved in Urban Community Gardening

Presentation made at Latinos in the Heartland (12th : 2014 : St. Louis, Mo.) and published in the annual conference proceedingSince Latinos became the largest minority group in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011), urban communities have experienced growth in Latino immigrants. This change in demographics helps fund employment opportunities in agribusiness, food processing, and harvesting of crops (Berry & Kirschner, 2002). This rapid growth of the Hispanic population has had, and will have, an important influence on the economic, political, and social life of the West, and on the nation as a whole. King County, Washington, has historically been a productive agricultural region with dairies, livestock operations, crop farms, and berry fields (King County, 2012). However, agriculture has decreased for many reasons, including urban encroachment, lack of technical support, high cost of land, and low profitability. These factors have discouraged young people from pursuing an agricultural career. In addressing those challenges, Washington State University Extension, through 4-H Youth Development, has designed and implemented an interactive agriculture program for youth. The program helps youth grow their knowledge of agriculture, environment, and natural resources. Youth learn that agriculture is everywhere and that many crops are used in food production. Furthermore, youth develop skills needed to achieve lifelong learning. The program includes gardening implementation in urban settings, which enhances the important role that agriculture plays in the national economy. www.cambio.missouri.edu/Library/ Keywords: immigrant population growth, urban agriculture, youth educatio

Volunteer study involving the Latino community

Presentation made at Latinos in the Heartland (11th : 2013 : Columbia, Mo.) and published in the annual conference proceedings.Hispanics represent the fastest growing population with cultural, demographic, and geographic diversity. This makes it difficult to successfully deliver homogeneous programs. Therefore, it is essential to better understand and have awareness of Hispanic American community needs. Such an understanding will allow 4-H Youth Development educators to deliver programs that engage Latinos as volunteers to benefit their community. This study surveyed 85 Hispanics to describe their participation in volunteerism and activities they would like to be involved in. The results provided information and recommendations that enabled 4-H Youth Development professionals to develop strategies for programs focused on recruiting Hispanics as volunteers

Building Capacity for Latino/Hispanic Volunteer Engagement

Hispanics have become the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Within that population there are vast diversities of culture that vary not only by country of origin, but by the regions and ethnicities within those countries. Designing programs to attract the participants and meet the needs of Latinos and their families is essential to 4-H’s future outreach program success. King County Extension Youth Development 4-H program has developed a program that provides volunteerism training based on awareness of the community that youth and adult participants serve. Results suggest that volunteer training helps participants become more prepared. They develop the knowledge and skills needed for planning, implementing a program, and applying their individual talents as well as mentoring strengths. This article describes how newly skilled Latinos participating in volunteerism training demonstrated and practiced what they learned with responsibility and inspiration for children at an elementary school in SeaTac, Washington

    Labour Managed Firms in Spain

There are at least two types of companies: conventional capitalist companies or Profit Maximizing Firms (PMFs) and, on the other hand, companies managed by their workforce or Labour-Managed Firms (LMFs). The entrepreneurial structures in Spain which include this second type are worker cooperatives (cooperativas de trabajo asociado) and public or limited liability worker-owned companies (sociedades laborales). This paper describes how this type of company has evolved using a set of indicators and offers a closer look at some of the reasons which explain the current difficult situation which, as will be shown, can be considered as critical in the case of cooperatives.Labour-Managed Firms, worker cooperatives, worker-owned companies, employment.
