Unitary relation between a harmonic oscillator of time-dependent frequency and a simple harmonic oscillator with and without an inverse-square potential
The unitary operator which transforms a harmonic oscillator system of
time-dependent frequency into that of a simple harmonic oscillator of different
time-scale is found, with and without an inverse-square potential. It is shown
that for both cases, this operator can be used in finding complete sets of wave
functions of a generalized harmonic oscillator system from the well-known sets
of the simple harmonic oscillator. Exact invariants of the time-dependent
systems can also be obtained from the constant Hamiltonians of unit mass and
frequency by making use of this unitary transformation. The geometric phases
for the wave functions of a generalized harmonic oscillator with an

Conditional generation of sub-Poissonian light from two-mode squeezed vacuum via balanced homodyne detection on idler mode
A simple scheme for conditional generation of nonclassical light with
sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics is proposed. The method utilizes
entanglement of signal and idler modes in two-mode squeezed vacuum state
generated in optical parametric amplifier. A quadrature component of the idler
mode is measured in balanced homodyne detector and only those experimental runs
where the absolute value of the measured quadrature is higher than certain
threshold are accepted. If the threshold is large enough then the conditional
output state of signal mode exhibits reduction of photon-number fluctuations

Vortex pinning in high-Tc materials via randomly oriented columnar defects, created by GeV proton-induced fission fragments
Extensive work has shown that irradiation with 0.8 GeV protons can produce
randomly oriented columnar defects (CD's) in a large number of HTS materials,
specifically those cuprates containing Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, and similar heavy
elements. Absorbing the incident proton causes the nucleus of these species to
fission, and the recoiling fission fragments create amorphous tracks, i.e.,
CD's. The superconductive transition temperature Tc decreases linearly with
proton fluence and we analyze how the rate depends on the family of
superconductors. In a study of Tl-2212 materials, adding defects decreases the
equilibrium magnetization Meq(H) significantly in magnitude and changes its
field dependence; this result is modeled in terms of vortex pinning. Analysis
of the irreversible magnetization and its time dependence shows marked
increases in the persistent current density and effective pinning energy, and
leads to an estimate for the elementary attempt time for vortex hopping, tau ~

Well-posedness of Hydrodynamics on the Moving Elastic Surface
The dynamics of a membrane is a coupled system comprising a moving elastic
surface and an incompressible membrane fluid. We will consider a reduced
elastic surface model, which involves the evolution equations of the moving
surface, the dynamic equations of the two-dimensional fluid, and the
incompressible equation, all of which operate within a curved geometry. In this
paper, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the
reduced elastic surface model by reformulating the model into a new system in
the isothermal coordinates. One major difficulty is that of constructing an
appropriate iterative scheme such that the limit system is consistent with the

Scanning microscopies of superconductors at very low temperatures
We discuss basics of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S)
of the superconducting state with normal and superconducting tips. We present a
new method to measure the local variations in the Andreev reflection amplitude
between a superconducting tip and the sample. This method is termed Scanning
Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy (SAS). We also briefly discuss vortex imaging
with STM/S under an applied current through the sample, and show the vortex
lattice as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and sample's
surface
Continuous twin screw rheo-extrusion of an AZ91D magnesium alloy
© The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2012The twin screw rheo-extrusion (TSRE) is designed to take advantage of the nondendritc microstructure and thixotropic characterization of semisolid-metal slurries and produce simple metal profiles directly from melts. The extrusion equipment consists of a rotor-stator high shear slurry maker, a twin screw extruder, and a die assembly. The process is continuous and has a potential for significantly saving energy, manufacturing cost, and enhancing efficiency. The present investigation was carried out to study the process performance for processing rods of an AZ91D magnesium alloy and the microstructure evolution during processing. The semisolid slurry prepared by the process was characterized by uniformly distributed nondendritic granular primary phase particles. AZ91D rods with uniform and fine microstructures and moderate mechanical properties were produced. For the given slurry making parameters, decreasing extrusion temperature was found to improve microstructures and properties. Notch-Fatigue Properties of Advanced TRIP-Aided Bainitic Ferrite Steels
To develop a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)-aided bainitic ferrite steel (TBF steel) with high hardenability for a common rail of the next generation diesel engine, 0.2 pct C-1.5 pct Si-1.5 pct Mn-0.05 pct Nb TBF steels with different contents of Cr, Mo, and Ni were produced. The notch-fatigue strength of the TBF steels was investigated and was related to the microstructural and retained austenite characteristics. If Cr, Mo, and/or Ni were added to the base steel, then the steels achieved extremely higher notch-fatigue limits and lower notch sensitivity than base TBF steel and the conventional structural steels. This was mainly associated with (1) carbide-free and fine bainitic ferrite lath structure matrix without proeutectoid ferrite, (2) a large amount of fine metastable retained austenite, and (3) blocky martensite phase including retained austenite, which may suppress a fatigue crack initiation and propagation.ArticleMETALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS TRANSACTIONS A-PHYSICAL METALLURGY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE. 43A(11):4129-4136 (2012)journal articl
Comparative Analyses of Zebrafish Anxiety-Like Behavior Using Conflict-Based Novelty Tests
Modeling of stress and anxiety in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) is increasingly utilized in neuroscience research and central nervous system (CNS) drug discovery. Representing the most commonly used zebrafish anxiety models, the novel tank test (NTT) focuses on zebrafish diving in response to potentially threatening stimuli, whereas the light-dark test (LDT) is based on fish scototaxis (innate preference for dark vs. bright areas). Here, we systematically evaluate the utility of these two tests, combining meta-analyses of published literature with comparative in vivo behavioral and whole-body endocrine (cortisol) testing. Overall, the NTT and LDT behaviors demonstrate a generally good cross-test correlation in vivo, whereas meta-analyses of published literature show that both tests have similar sensitivity to zebrafish anxiety-like states. Finally, NTT evokes higher levels of cortisol, likely representing a more stressful procedure than LDT. Collectively, our study reappraises NTT and LDT for studying anxiety-like states in zebrafish, and emphasizes their developing utility for neurobehavioral research. These findings can help optimize drug screening procedures by choosing more appropriate models for testing anxiolytic or anxiogenic drugs
